Trivia.

The distributor cap is the same on a FJ60/2F and the 3FE.
The distributor rotor is the same on a 3FE and a 1FZFE.

It looks awesome! I can't wait to see it in person. You are diffidently in final final assembly. I hope my 40 can come together just as well. Great Job. Maybe there will be a cold Pacifico waiting for you tomorrow.

Sure looks silly without the windshield.

The "looks silly" aspect is severely overshadowed by the holy-$#it that's an awesome machine. I wish my free time had been a little more and my leash a little longer such that I could have helped bring it together the many times you had help with it.

Are you having a new windshield cut? Or just someone installing it for you. To put in glass is a one  job - Texican has a write up here on ih8mud.

The truck looks fantastic!! :bounce::bounce:

The glass was cut, but three of us were unable to get the gasket around the glass. I'm taking the windshield, glass, and new gasket to a guy so he can install it.

What else? I still need to:
  • wire up the fuel pump relay. [check]
  • wire up the rear marker lights. [check]
  • wire up/relay the driving lights. [wire run, relay mounted, need switch]
  • wire up the CB [check] and install the antenna.
  • wire up the front locker. [wire run, need switch]
  • bend the shifter cuz it hits the center console.

Update on the windshield. On Saturday I delivered the frame, glass, and molding to Tim who also happens to work at R&C. I noticed it looked like the glass was too small. When he and I started looking we realized the windshield frame was not "square" by a significant amount (I knew the truck had been on it's side before). Tim was able to square up the frame using a frame alignment machine, but the paint will need attention. The glass is installed and the windshield will be installed tonight.

Fuel pump. Originally the pump was wired directly from the ECU, which is how Toyota does it. I was not sure the aftermarket pump would have enough juice, which is why I ran the pump off a relay on its own circuit. When I ran the engine I could hear what sounded like an electric fan. It took me awhile to figure out that the noise was from the pump. The pump was not that loud before.

Jon,

On my 3FE40 - my electric pump is also using a relay, and "On" lead from the wiring harness - it does not go thru the ECU. Mine is loud most of the time, just a buzz - or whine... and If I don't have the engine on, but the Fuel pump running - I can hear the fuel retuning back to the tank.

I also put a kill switch in the "on" lead, for security, and in the event I roll, I can cut the fuel. In a perfect world you should wire a low oil pressure cut off for the fuel system.

Every now and then, the pump gets very quiet.. and I worrie it's fried - but it's been working fine for the last year, and I drive the 3FE40 at least 2-3 days a week.

I have mine mounted using rubber mounts, but I think these style pumps are just noisy.

Jon,

If the pump doesn't draw too much amps ( I can measure for u if you need) and the ECU can handle running it directly (w/o a relay), then one option would be to install a kill switch in series. If the switch is not on then the pump will never run. Just a thought.

Thanks guys. The way it's wired is:

Relay terminal 30: power from the fuse block, 25 amp circuit (about the only vacant wire left).
Relay terminal 87: to fuel pump.
Relay terminal 85: ground.
Relay terminal 86: 12v from the ECU.

The ECU triggers the relay, that way the pump doesn't run if the engine is not on. I have another idea for the cutoff switch, not off the relay. I like the rubber mount idea on the pump. Right now it's bolted to the frame, which probably makes it loud. Ash, I might have the truck done enough to bring to the meeting. I wouldn't mind finding out how many amps the pump pulls.

I don't know if the local suppliers have rubber mounts but I've bought some in the past from McMastercarr. FYI.

Metal Tech can't seem to give me a straight (i.e. honest) answer about my roll cage. The cage that was ordered on July 1st, supposed to take 2 weeks to make, then 3 weeks, then it was supposed to be done on July 29th, then last Friday it was supposed to be on a truck coming my way ... oh wait, it's on a pallet waiting for the truck, then today it sounds like they haven't made it.

Was that roll cage *and* seat belts or roll cage *or* seat belts? If it's "or" I think I have some lap belts you can borrow to get it up Unser/Montano/Golf Course for a half dozen miles...

Great! I'll give you a call.

Jon:

If I knew how weird the order from MT was for you, I'd have offered you our Jackson cage kit, and taken yours when it got here.

I like the lap belt idea just to drive it. I really, really want you to drive it this weekend. I need to know if your PS cooler works well enough with the 60 series/FJ pump combo. I've got the same, but before I go about making a bracket for the PS cooler, you know... guinea pig and all...

I can't imagine how frustrating it's got to be to be waiting for that cage.

Dan

So much for that idea.

Are you planning on rolling the 40 between your house and Marc's? Besides the roll cage, was there some thing else that's preventing you from driving the beast?

The only thing keeping me from driving is seat belts. As soon as I call Steve that will be temporarily resolved.

Just took a maiden voyage around the block. Interesting ride. Power steering feels good. Rear locker made a bunch of noise. I'll need to get used to the H55F gearing and the 2FE torque.

Oh, thanks Steve!
