reminder about the gears. I purchased a wood stake mill last week, and cut 125,000 this week, so havent had time to be on MUD. pm me.

Happy New Year!

I am still around. email me at jodiii@hotmail.com for faster response. I bought a wood mill first of the year and it has been like drinking from a fire hose. I will check inventory Friday. I have a couple gears left.

Hey everybody,

I just got around to playing with the new brass gear as my motor stopped working for awhile and I wanted to build another. I have a brass gear from the past and one of the new gears that were made lately. The metal cover plate doesn't fit the new gear because it doesn't have that wallowed out recess that the OEM plastic one has.

Has anyone solved this problem yet?

Old gear on left and new on the right.

Abqcruiser,

One other question on the brass gear. Does yours make noise going up. I thought it was the motor, still makes it with new motor.

I noticed the same thing as you when i went to install my brass gear, luckily my plastic gear is in great shape so i stuffed it back in for now. As far as the noise while going up. When i had my gear and window assembly torn apart i regreased everything. going down if functions super smooth, going up i still get that groan going up. I was assuming it was my motor as well, as my motor goes up VERY slowly, and as of somewhat recently has to be helped up.

As for the brass gear, i was going to do exactly what Abqcruiser mentioned and just throw the gear on a lathe and turn down the center section a little.

Npulver, My motor was also slow going up, but I always attributed that to the new weather stripping. I also noticed certain pinch points along the channel as the glass slides up. I lightly bent the channel to allow better clearance and now it is operating better.

Are your window runs in good shape? Is the felt nice and new? Any chance the window is rubbing on rubber?

I think he said he could have some more made up, but be aware they will need some machining, unless he does it on the new ones. Scroll up and see my picture of the one he had made, missing a groove. What style gear do you have, new or old?

I have not been on MUD in a few weeks. When the gear guy made these, he had my entire window motor setup. He said that my gear did I not need a gear for the cover to be installed. Now, what I can do is tell him we have to have the groove in every gear. Would that help?

So the rear window in the pig I just bought quit working a few weeks ago. The owner at the time had a mechanic check it and he said “the motor is bad”. I won’t be in a position to get my hands on it until early July but it occurs to me after reading a myriad of threads that it would be good to have a replacement gear in hand before I bother to tear into the mechanism.

Is anyone still making these or does anyone have a spare they would like to sell? I would prefer to stay away from the SOR steel one if possible but will buy one of those if it becomes my only choice. Would be happy to buy a working motor from someone as well if anyone would like to part with one. 1977 (October 1976) pig.

From my experience the motors run forever. There is a lock-out switch that is supposed to prevent the motor from engaging if the tailgate is open. Your switch probably "thinks" the tailgate is open. I would put 12v on the motor to check it before you replace it.
