just put the two head bolts in and try it, best case it's fine, worst case you have to change the head gasket :meh:

Just a FYI we usually can have OEM head gaskets and head bolts next-day.

Been a bit. Work has been moving slowly lately (blame work etc.) But it runs on the Sniper now! Doesn't drive. It'll go into gear but acts like it's just disengaged.
I threw a cheapy ebay clutch+slave on it a while back and it bled fine, however I remember the slave pushrod being too long and not allowing me to bolt up the slave. I cut another one down that I had laying around to get it in, and it works on pedal, but it won't fully engage the clutch. Its a floor shift 3sp that's been hobbled in by a PO. So I'm not sure what's there/missing/wrong. It seems like the slave needs to be offset towards the front of the car any about another inch or so.
Anyone have a pic of the slave mount and maybe what pushrod length is about right?

Here's a couple pics of what I'm dealing with.

Nevermind. Think I figured it.

Took the inspection cover off and OMG! The pressure plate is rusted out and the friction disc is junk. Now to have a beer and contemplate whether to h55 convert or just reseal and refresh the 3sp and clutch stuff. Projects! Am I right?

either way you go I would recommend converting to the diaphragm style pressure plate from 75-up. You would also need the 75-up flywheel which is nice as they are a bit lighter. I have an extra I can spare

Just clutch kit and flywheel right?

And the later style clutch fork and throwout hub (We sell as a complete setup, both fork/hub/clips for $130, new OEM)

I should have a few good used forks and hubs too.

If you go to the trouble to swap all the clutch stuff out find a 4 speed to hang off it. It’s a huge upgrade not having that turd non sync first gear

Are the driveshaft lengths different enough to have to source new ones?

There’s a difference of a couple inches. It’s easy enough for a driveshaft shop to shorten the rear and retube the front. But there’s a lot of other factors to consider too.
Bellhousing
Transfer case
Transfer case linkage
Park brake cable
Speedo cable

I *think* you can easily enough bolt a 4spd trans to an early t-case, but someone with a better memory would have to chime in and verify.

Lifelong40Fan did the 4 speed conversion on his FJ55 and I am getting ready to do it as well. I am in the process of gathering all the parts. I think all I have left to get is some later model drive shafts for the larger flanges. I have a 77 FJ40 front disk axle and a 2F motor, 4 speed trans, and t-case from a 1986 FJ60. All this is giong in a 1970 FJ55.

It takes a little work, but can be done. I think it will be well worth if. Here is his thread...

Anyone know where I can get some later model flanges or complete driveshafts?

Gonna be monitoring this while planning. Thanks @Vexvader

In terms of ease and expense, I believe the easiest way to go from 1f or 155f/3 speed to 4 speed is 4 speed bellhousing (I got an fj60 one cheap), 3 speed clutch with the 3 fingers, and find a 4 speed tranny with the tcase attached, whether that be 1 piece or split case. The issue with a split case is the ebrake unless you get the one Matt has in the classified section.

Yeah it's looking like I'm gonna go Matt's route on this one.
