So I started this thread because I had gift cards to use up at Amazon. And this is what I bought so far:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00JXW0S5S?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o00_s00 - Yellow film for the fog lights
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B014W5R85S?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00 - Action camera for the off road adventures
This was from another forum members build thread to add LED lights in front of the mirrors:

Still need to buy the CBI mounts for the lower windshield corners.

They are instant on...in that the "fade" is so fast it is not nearly as dramatic as the stock lights :p

I did the 4th gen CBI light mounts. Love them! If you buy the 25$ LED spots on amazon this is about a $80 job!
Idaho gx470 remodel

Yup I bought the $25 LED's and now planning to do the 07 mirror control mod to free up an extra slot for a button to control the lights.

But has anyone found a good stock button to use for lights? On the 80 I used a rear defroster toggle so it had a light lit up when my lights were on.

I've been looking at similar era Tacomas and FJ Cruisers OEM fog switches for that spot.... It appears that either would fit with perhaps a slight trim of the notch/keyway, just depends which style you want as the FJC one has an indicator light on it, whereas the Tacoma ones I was finding were only back-lit.

Alright, I sort of feel like an idiot posting this, because I feel like I should have known about this LOOOOONG ago!

I got my wife her first GX (an '03) in July, 2004, and she drove it for 10 years to the month. During that time of ownership, I always HATED that fact that the 3 non-driver's doors seemed to be locked every time I was outside of the vehicle (Hers was set in the mode of "Lock when gear shifter moved out of park, and remain locked until manually unlocked." Every early GX I've ever encountered seemed to be set that way from the factory, and I didn't drive it enough to become accustomed to unlocking the doors when I got out of it.)

In any event, it was always annoying to me, and I never could bring myself to take it to the dealership to spend $75 to have them reset the setting to some other mode. Plus, the only other mode that made sense to cure the problem was the "Lock when moved out of park, and unlock when put back in park," but from a personal safety standpoint, I didn't like the idea of having the car automatically unlock when my wife was about to get out it.

ANYWAY, that's a long story to get where I am going: I have experienced the same frustration with my recently-acquired '04, and when looking for something in the owner's manual yesterday, I accidentally happened upon an entry for OWNER-programmable instructions for 4 different automatic lock settings. Without detailing each one of them, they're there, and I found one that works perfectly for me! In my '04 owner's manual, the instructions are on page 18.

Problem solved! (And I'm still an idiot for not knowing this for the last nearly 12 years!):grinpimp:

Ended up going with the FJC switch and harness. Fits absolutely perfect in the spot where the later center diff lock switch goes. No trimming necessary. Part number PT297-35070-AS is the switch and PT297-35070-SH is the wiring. I imagine the wiring harness isn't absolutely necessary, but I got it anyway.

I actually changed mine so it would unlock when I put in Park and Lock when changed to drive. I hated forgetting to hit un-lock to let passengers out.

What custom setting did you end up making?

Couldn't get those part numbers to come up on my local dealer parts site. Found it used on eBay for $35 using that part number?

Strange. I found them on several sites and ended up getting them through Amazon with free prime shipping even though they were a couple bucks more there. Just checked using those part numbers and they came right up on Amazon. The only thing I can think of is you have to use the full part number *including* the -AS or -SH, not just the first 10 digits.

As to your wiring question from earlier, what I meant when I said I imagine it's not totally necessary..... It's not, but you'll have to figure out a different connector etc for the back of the switch. The OEM one is going to need to be cut and spliced at one end, but I got it for the switch end. Hope that makes sense.

A lazy thing....zip tie the hood release and let the loop sit in the Lexus logo...no more reaching under the hood!

Do you have a pic of this? My grill is broken at the latch, so my release rod is dangling under the hood and I would love to do this, but I can't imagine what you have done clearly enough to duplicate. A pic would be awesome!

#1) So I found a bunch of different aux light options at this e-bay seller from China and it appears that they come with a wiring harness!

#4) This button with wiring all in one and apparently comes in white, blue, or green.

Personally I think I am going to go with the Walmart one (#2) because that is the most like the FJ Cruiser one that TheFerg shared up above and then buy the last one (#5) off of eBay from China for the wiring harness. So it will be a total of $10.74 for the button and $4.99 for the harness and a spare button. I would just get this China one but I don't like the fact that it says LED Off. This is a much easier pill to swallow than one for $34 from Toyota plus whatever the harness cost.

I looked at a handful of eBay ones before I bought mine and none of them had the look I prefer....they all seem to be just slightly off with the coloring of the print or the font is off...I'm an OEM look kinda guy.

That hilux switch on Wal-Mart though looks pretty darn good in the pics...and that price is awesome...could buy two of them and still be half the cost of the FJ switch I bought. Def let us know how it turns out and get some pics for us with it next to your other switches. Do you know were will you be putting it?

Loop one zip tie through the pull lever. Loop second zip tie through first zip tie and let it rest inside the logo. Job done.
