Well, I've been feeling the need to be driving a 55 for awhile, almost since the orange and white truck ( "creamsicle" as my daughter called it) got laid over (see pics) and then dismantled. My 40 is a great truck, a great wheeler and a sharp truck but it ain't a 55. Been looking for the right 55 for some time now and just bought what I think will be a great one.

Here's the for sale blurb that was in the (not 55) vehicles for sale section of MUD's classifieds: https://forum.ih8mud.com/fj55-fj56/730849-73-fj55-mid-tn.html. When I contacted Wallace I found he had bought a 60 from me years ago (Matt Bascom's ex-green truck). Small world but our history made it easy to make a deal with Wallace. Paid for the truck waited a week or so for the transporter to pick it up and it arrived here in PA Saturday evening.

The truck appears to be at least as good as Wallace represented it. With a few pumps of the gas pedal the V8 lit right up, sounds great and has more power than my 40 with the hi-po 2F and 4.88 gears. Only drove it a mile or so before putting it in the garage but it is solid. Drivetrain seems real good and no bad noises anywhere. The V8 install is very well done- I'm impressed with the craftsmanship, and using the Marks adapter means plenty of room at the distributor and having the tranny and transfer in the original position.

The seats (original bench) appear to have been reupholstered with cloth at some point. Not bad looking, showing some wear but better than most 55 stock seats. Dash is excellent gauge cluster very clean, entire dash is nice. Nice set of gauges mounted cleanly under the dash. Nothing hacked up anywhere. The entire floor is lined with sound deadener and I guess that's one of the reasons this truck seems so solid. The mat on the firewall is in excellent shape. Headliner has some tears in it but is workable. All the rubber mats are in place and the cargo area has a Specter carpet liner. Door and cargo panels excellent, hard to believe and the glass is pretty good. The dome light even works!

The rear window works with a jumper, I'll need to look at the switches and see where the problem is. I'll get that working no sweat. All other windows go up and down nicely and all the door locks work. Body is excellent- all the flat panels (doors, hood, quarters) are straight and unmolested. there are a few dings here and there and one big dent in the driver rear door but that can all be fixed.

It has Saginaw power steering (never saw it on a 55 before) that feels great. Exhaust system good shape.

It's going into the body shop tomorrow. My next door neighbor runs his own shop and he is slow right now so he's going to fix the body work and paint it. red and white now, I'm going with orange and white. The front fender bottoms were redone and are nice. the front uppers need some attention but not a lot. Some odd rust in the rear door rockers but it's minor. All body mounts look great. Supposedly this truck came to Tennessee from CA but I can't substantiate that. It has a late September 72 build date.

Hoping to have this old girl back and on the road by the end of June. of course that plan depends on my body guy so stay tuned and see how it works out. I'm just glad to be back in the ranks again! Gary S

Boy, that first picture looks like the poor thing just rolled over and died and you're trying to beat life back into it.

Any other plans, other than paint, for it.

all this and no pics of the new toy? wtf?! you tease!

Congrats and it's great for the rest of us that your back! We're lucky to have you in the pen with us!

55

Pictures wil have to wait the 55 is at the body shop now. Estimated time of paint and body work two months (sad face). The guy who is doing it is awesome, the best body man i know. happens to be my next door neighbor and owes me some favors and is a bit slow....... good timing, maybe good karma. Bad part is I didn't have a lot of time to go over the old girl thoroughly so will probably have some shakedonw time when she's been painted.

Thanks for all the nice comments! Gary S

Yah

Way to go Gary. Nice to have you back in the fold. Can't wait to see how it turns out.

There is something special about a pig!
There are many folds when it comes to a pig. Especially a well fed pig.....Welcome back to the sickness/love.

Old 55

My old truck was a hodge podge of colors. The orange came from one of the hardware stores that had it on sale for 99 cents a can. I bought two cases! Roof was rustoleum, a brighter orange than the body sides, that paint was brushed on heavily. The white also came from the 99 cent rattle can department. After a weekend of wheeling I could touch up the old girl for 2 or 3 dollars!

I am not fond of the factory colors although I probably have never seen an original orange 55. For whit we're going with a late model GM bright white. My body guy is getting me a Dupont color chart for reds and oranges and I'm just gonna pick one out of there. I always liked the pastel look of the orange that was on the old truck- will try to match that.

Will try to get pictures onec Frank starts on the 55. Gary S

Can't wait to see it. Two months will be just in time for coal miner.

Good to see that you are back into pig farming. :)

Pig run

How's mid-August sound? It'll give me time to get some T-shirts printed. maybe a day at the hew park outside of Shamokin, or maybe a day at P******?

Very cool!! Ive had sellers remorse like 4 times getting rid of pigs. And count me in for the pig run this year. I can always zip tie the 55 grille to my 80 again!

I'll need to check on a few things before I can commit to coming. I'm not sure the body on my pig is usable... It's toasty in the floors but ill knowing in two weeks... I would love to wheel it in aug though!

Progress report

Well I visited the body shop today to see the 55, it's really coming along. Hood has been stripped and prepped and is ready for paint. Roof is stripped, prepped and primed. one door stripped prepped and primed, other doors and quarters stripped, as is the valance. The drive rear door had a bad downward dent in it that actually deformed the door. Body man not liking it and I am hoping there is a door on the way from Lance at Ironpig. Picked out the colors from the Dupont sample books got as close to what was on my old piggy as I could. Found there were several options for clear- reasonable, expensive and really expensive! Opted for the middle of the road grade. Alas I forgot to take my camera (!!!) and my body guy told me he'd snap a few shots for me. Stay tuned, my fingers are crossed that the piggy will be painted and ready to go to the Coal Mine event next month! Gary S

Pig pictures

Well stopped to see my truck yesterday and this time took my camera along. They were removing the driver front door when I got there that will be the next to be massaged. Frank is hoping to paint the hood and the passenger front door today, maybe the valance and the gas filler door, too. I have a door coming to replace the pass rear that will be the last piece of the bodywork project as far as I know now. Anyway here are some pics- it's basically a pretty clean piggy!
