I have completed the swap. I bought an L92 & 6l80e from the local junkyard. Was pulled from a 2007 Yukon Denali. Everything functions as it should. There have been no modifications to the interior of the rig that would indicate the change. Gauges work, trans shifts as it should (with sport/tow mode and tap shifting, etc). I’ve put about 5k miles on it since the swap and I’m now comfortable saying all the bugs have been worked out. This won't be a true step by step instruction guide but it should be pretty darn close if you take the above motor/trans from a 2007 Yukon Denali and put it into a ’94 LC.

I made some changes along the way that aren’t critical to the build. For example, I didn’t have room to put the York compressor back in (after pulling the 1FZFE) so I set up an electric compressor. I added a second fuel tank that I could change over to on the fly so the wiring for that was roughed in at the time of the swap. I also changed the brakes to hydroboost (huge improvement).

A couple of disclaimers... I leaned on my friends to make it happen. I couldn't have done it without them. Everything from making fuse block labels to rewiring the Toyota cruise control lever to run the GM cruise.

You’ll need some basic skills. I'm not a professional welder but can stick metal together. Don't know how a guy could do this swap without a little metal fabrication know how. The other thing we absolutely needed was the FSM with a vehicle EWD. I had the Toyota FSM and bought the GM one on ebay.

A couple of additional pieces of information… The Landcruiser had a 4” lift and with 35” tires prior to the swap. I had also regeared it from 4:10’s to 4:88’s. If I had known this swap was coming I would not have regeared it. Not necessary with the power I have now. Prior to the swap I was getting about 10mpg. I’m now at about 11mpg. At 70mph I’m just under 2200 rpm. Total cost of the swap was about 11K without any money going toward labor. For a shop to charge 30k for this job is not unreasonable. Probably pencils out to about $4 per hour. I started it in October 2020 and had it driveable by spring 2021. By October 2021 I finally had every last detail ironed out.

Finally, I feel a debt to the many who have gone before me and posted their build on this website. I couldn’t have done it without you. I’m not one who typically posts stuff so I’m sorry in advance if I screw up the posts. The posts will come in pieces. We’ll start with prepping for the swap…

Before embarking on this, I spent hours going through different forums and looking at what other guys had done. Most made sense to me, but there were certain things I didn't understand until I was deep into it. It became clear that I needed a way to organize and reference the information if it was going to be of any use to me when the build started. I created an index of sorts. Because this was done prior to the build there are likely new threads that would be of use to someone starting this project. Would be worth some more looking.

EDIT: Looks like I forgot to include Mark's Adapter. Kind of a wash when you look at recovered costs. Still cost about $11k.

On to the mechanical stuff...

I let the local junkyard know what I was looking for and a year or so later got a call that they had an L92 & 6l80e in a 2007 Yukon Denali with 90k miles. I picked up the motor, tranny, and other components. I figured I'd get as much done as I could before disabling the Landcruiser. To the donor motor...

Wow! Excellent summary! I’m leaning more towards a 5.3 swap down the road. I was getting 11 mpg on my 315 Toyo Open Country MTs.

I guess the main gain is power?

Economy does not seem to be part of this equation? Or is the 11mpg because of the 4:88’s?

Cheers

There were a couple of reasons for the swap. At 260k miles, I knew that either a swap or rebuild was in the future. Friend of mine had successfully swapped a 5.3 into a Scout II and was willing to help me through it. Finally, I developed an oil leak between the motor and trans. It was either a rear main leak or an upper pan arch leak. Either way, the trans had to come out and the engine may have needed to be lifted a few inches (if it was the pan arch). I decided if I had to go to that trouble, I wasn't going to put 30-year-old technology back in.

Yes, the power is nice. Went from roughly 200 hp to 400hp. Much more enjoyable to drive. I don't think the poor fuel economy is a result of the gearing. The 6l80e likes to keep it in a higher gear and I don't spend hardly any time on the freeway at 70mph. Most driving is only on local pavement until I can get into the hills.

The truck oil pain that came with the motor had to be swapped for an F-body pan. The F-body pan is more shallow. The truck pan simply will not fit in the LC engine bay if you want to be able to close the hood. Replaced the oil pickup with an F-body pickup. This required some modification of the windage tray.

This link will get you to the instructions to go to an F-body pan: https://documents.holley.com/199r10566rev8.pdf
I didn't have to cut out the quarter round. I did need to drill an additional hole in the F-body pan. Wasn't a big deal. Used the gasket as a template:

F-BODY PICKUP - NOTICE BEHIND THE PICKUP IS A BRACKET. THE WINDAGE TRAY HAS TO BE MODIFIED FOR THE BRACKET TO MOUNT.

At this point I moved to the gas pedal. A corvette pedal will fit (see parts list for the part number). Absolutely no way the yukon pedal was going in there. I have a hand throttle control and wanted to retain this feature (sometimes use it when winching). For this reason, I cut the corvette pedal off the assembly and welded a portion of the LC pedal onto it.

As you can see, it was bolted to a plate I could mount to the firewall. Old pedal attached:

This allowed me to continue to drive the LC. When I was ready, I just disconnected the throttle cable from the pedal. Hand throttle cable remained attached to the LC pedal.

One more thing on the pedal. Because it's a vette pedal, pins D&F in the pigtail to the pedal were switched.

(And for the particularly observant, I did replace the gasket around the steering column as it goes through the firewall)

Last thing before pulling the LC motor and trans was to bolt Mark's adapter to the 6l80e. If I remember correctly, there was a short piece of tail housing on the transmission that I removed. It was pretty much plug & play. Mark's is great to work with and it didn't take long from when I placed the order until I had it on my doorstep. They send an instruction sheet with the adapter that's easy to follow.

LC motor and trans came out. Just slowly started disconnecting things until it was free. Front bumper/grill etc were removed. Was a little daunting initially but just kept picking away at it and eventually all was free.

Once pulled, I rolled the rig outside and pressure washed the engine bay. I carefully removed the wiring harness from the Toyota engine/trans. The throttle body had to come off the 1FZFE to accomplish this. Harness was set aside. Motor and trans were sold when the swap was complete. Kept the temp sender & oil pressure sender.
