One day it will be my home. For now it’s the Salt Lake rat race.
I’d be more than happy living anywhere from Idaho City on up through Salmon. Lots of other places too. I just don’t think my wife could be that far from a Target.

That's why I popped the hood today, I was fearing a popped freeze plug. Last time I checked the coolant was good to the -30° ballpark.

Yeah I’m going to pop my hood today. Past 2 nights have been -20F and not getting above 0 during the day. On Thursday we went from 49F to -20F that night. That sucks.

I didn’t even attempt to start the diesel, will today it’s supposed to be a balmy 38.

supposed to be a balmy 38.
Supposed to be about that here also, but unless the wind picks up to blow the cold out out of the valley I don't see it happening today. Gives me a good reason to tie some flies though.

Rain down low, ice at the bottom of the pass, and tons of fresh snow up at the top, it snowed steady all day.

While soaking the underside of the 40 with Fluid Film today I found this mess.

Everything, primer, paint, Monstaliner, everything, separated from the metal on the underside of the driver side floorboard.

Damn yo.

Let the fluid film flow!

I swear I prepped the snot out of the bottom of the tub, that particular area is new metal from Real Steel that I welded in.

I can only assume that I didn't prep it correctly resulting in that area delaminating like that.

Big flakes, smooth as glass on the metal side.

Do the Real Steel coat the metal parts? I have parts from them too..
did you sand it before primer?
I used a scotch brite pad to scuff it up, and a metal prep/degreaser before primer.

Apparently I should have used something more aggressive like 60 grit on a sander.

would seem like moisture got under there, no?

That is crazy to see.
Definitely not something that I was expecting.

I'm not sure if that was the root problem here, eventually moisture did make its way in there but I don't think it was the initial problem. If there was proper adhesion with the primer and subsequent layers to the metal I shouldn't have had that happen like that, at least in mind.

when did you paint it?
The metal looks fine.. and can be redone..
but the bad thing it is probably everywhere.. and requires the whole tube removal...

Yeah, I'm not thrilled. Tubs not coming off again, I just don't have the equipment or time currently. It's going to have to be a rattle can bandaid and another application of Monstaliner in that area.

That is the only place on the tub that I can find anything significant, everything else is typical paint chips and such.

Yeah... wish you an easy fix ... just take a break... get some beer.... and Happy New Year!

I'm questioning Fluid Film, not the prep or paint. I'm thinking that enough solvent compromised the layers from the metal, very very slowly. A previous owner applied some kind of liner that removes in flakes on mine, it is different because the liner is removing from the paint underneath it, not from the steel below. I feel confident in using all-position Rustoleum in a can to recover any flaking that I'm observing.

I’ve used a decent self etch in a spray bomb. Let me do some digging and i’ll let you know the brand. Doesn’t seem worth it to pull the tub, get as much as you can and then watch the rest.

I don't think the Fluid Film had anything to do with it, I guess anything is possible, but I'm leaning towards something else.
