I have a pretty specialized job in an electric utility. Limits what I can do without changing fields and not even every utility does it.
I'd love to hear more about that.

I've always wanted to get into distribution and power control, maybe some instrumentation stuff, but it's hard to walk away from 19 years of federal service, 11 more to go.

You guys should check out power engineers on Hailey if you’re interested in going the private route. I think they’re in the construction side tho

I’m an Energy Trader, power Scheduler, has different names. Basically forecast demand, schedule generation and buy/sell to other utilities as needed. Been doing it for about 15 years.
Originally, I wanted to be an Energy Dispatcher. Still may one day, who knows. At this point, being a Hydro Dam mechanic sounds interesting enough I’d try it. Very fluid in our life right now, sold our house and a bunch of our stuff just biding time until we figure out what we want to do when we grow up….

Northwestern Energy had some openings at the hydro plant at Hebgen dam recently, right on some of the best water in Montana.

My BIL is a Hydro plant mech at Hoover dam. He likes it except for the normal gov bu!!s***. I used to have to deal with the power scheduler at the water district were I retired from. It was all about the demand.

Yeah, I understand the government BS.

Although I do enjoy my time off!

A normal person would have pulled this out, called @ToyotaMatt for a new one and did the plug and play thing.

On the other hand, most parts on these rigs are robust enough to rebuild or rework enough to get by for another day.

I'm the type to rebuild things.

Here's the guts out of the ignition switch from a 74 for anyone that's interested.

I was having problems with the ACC firing the starter when switched back to ACC. Occasionally the switch was hanging up in the start position in cold weather.

I'm pretty sure I fixed both for the meantime.

I also pulled the most PO thing that I think I've done yet.

The gear selector has always hit my cupholder on the Tuffy console.

A little love in a 1/2" EMT bender and I solved that. Personally, I would have rather used a hickey bender, but I had to use tools on hand.

@BMThiker would approve of some ghettofab tools to get into the radio slot of the Tuffy console.

Tonight was also a good night to put a few shots of grease in the pivots on the 4plus bumper, it was another thing that was a little stiff in cold weather.

I'm definitely going to need a new switch one of these days, you can see in my pics how worn the contacts are. I bet it dropped an old school salt packet worth of copper dust out of the housing when I pulled it out.

Nothing last forever.

your method was sound there / is sound , the ROTARY copper contacts get MOON craters in them from the spring loaded detent balls , and that's the point of no return ....

that can be dangerous if your spring loaded start feature step wont return automatically , to the KEY ON position by it self , you might hit a Giant Sequoia tree out on your compound game trails , or worse a grizzly out of season .

then you could wind up just like Mr. Ferguson from the AMC show HELL ON WHEELS , after his entanglement with his switch and a Grizzly Bear ........

and we don't need all that going on here in TECH .... :D

You got a patent pending on your new SST?

If your ignition switch fails again, send me a private message. I have have a new one that I think would fit your truck. Bought it while chasing an electrical gremlin after putting my truck back together, I found the gremlin somewhere else.

Working on some things. I need to build a sub-frame for the top to rest on, something that will be secure while bouncing down forest circus roads.

I'll pm you soon. At the very least I kicked the can down the road for a bit, nothing long term when it comes to being 3 hours from anywhere.

I'll probably cover the plywood back there with that black speaker box carpet stuff.

Add some piano hinges, and some 25lb magnets to hold the lid in place and I might have something to admire.
