I had some time today to work on the 40, it has been having some fuel delivery problems.

I started by cutting the line off of the fuel tank side to the fuel pump and plumbing in a hose from a fuel can. I did that to “proof” the fuel pump and to see if I could get fuel up to the carb. Cranked the key over for a few with no success.

At that point I pulled the hard line from the carb and put a hose on it going to a coffe can. Cranked it some more, no luck. Cranked it some more, no luck.

Double checked that the hose was fully submersed in the gas can, cranked some more, no luck.

I pulled the top half of the fuel pump off to inspect it for any tears or debris in it, I didn’t see anything that would cause a concern. I pushed open all the valves inside of the pump and didn’t find anything to be concerned about there either. Put it all back together and tried again.

No dice.

I’m going to drink some beer now.

I’m starting to think that I may have a problem with the fuel pump. Only if I could actually find a problem with it.

Found something funny in the fuel tank

It’s funny how things just work sometimes, one day nothing works, the next everything just falls in place.

The battery was getting a little weak from trying to crank the engine to get fuel flowing to the carb, today I decided to hook up cables to the Dodge and charge the battery for a while. (Fixed the lift pump on the Dodge Saturday)
So after about 20 minutes of letting it charge I tried cranking it over, on the third cranking session I had gas pumping into a jug! Hooked the carb back up and fired it up.

I let it run for about 30 minutes from a jerry can, decided the fuel pump works like it is supposed to work.

Hooked the fuel filter back in after checking it out, ran for about another 15 minutes with no problem.

I decided to run a new line from the fuel tank to the filter, which required pulling the seat, frame, cover, and lots of little things. While I had the tank free to pull I dumped it out into a 5 gallon bucket, that is where the leaf and ball of funk came from. I think that ball of funk was getting caught in the pick up tube in the tank, killing the fuel flow to the carb.

Rinsed the tank out a little more and put it all back together enough to put the fuel tank and lines back in service.

I ran it around the backroads for a while with no fuel problems, I did find 2 coolant leaks in the rear heater coil and lines.

Parked it until next time, parts are scattered everywhere, no passenger seat, and tools all over the place!

Thanks, one step at a time. I just hope I can get it road ready and reliable for the summer. There are too many backroads that need exploring in the mountains around here!

And trout in just about all of them.

I'm still planning a late spring trip up that way, Ryan.

But, I was surprised by your assertion that, "There are too many back roads... ...and trout in just about all of them".

Should I plan on just running nets up and down the back roads, or, will I need waders and a fly rod?

For the first time since I have owned my 40 it now has window felts and wipers! I used new OEM wipers and felts as well as new OEM window runs, I still need to get new weatherstripping and the wing vent seal. So far it has gone together pretty much as expected, the doors feel 100% better now, less rattles and they don’t feel so “hollow” when closed.
