intermittent issues suck!! they are so hard to chase. if it’s only after you fill and not just hot starts maybe it is something to do with the fuel. mine was primarily at the pump because that’s when i’d stop only for a short time. inevitably i’d be stuck there 20 min until it cooled down enough and then off we’d go. once running i had no issues. it was just getting it to start.

Is there any changes when you remove the gas cap upon start up/fill up? Maybe an issue with the fuel pickup tubes

I’m not sure if I understand the question. I’m not getting a whoosh when I open the cap to fill up. Fixed that with the charcoal canister. But I’d love to hear your thoughts.

Didn’t happen today when I filled up on my way to Dallas but I started filling up, went in the store, came out, cleaned the windows and farted around for a couple minutes and it fired up. Probably used up my 5+ minutes so who knows.

In the vein of “what did I do with my cruiser this week”…

Raised my LSPV up about 1 3/4” via a chunk of highway sign post I had laying around. Helped my brakes somewhat but they’re still pretty soft. Bled, bled, bled…

This was in anticipation of a couple week work trip to Dallas. My tundra has been getting neglected due to having two TLC’s to care for so I figured I’d brave the trip in Paul.

It was mostly uneventful with the exception of driving through a torrential downpour and while the wipers were on high, the ps one slipped and hung up on the ds one seizing the whole burrito.
Fortunately I was already in the slow lane as an escape plan if things got wiley so I limped down the shoulder to the next exit and readjusted them in the rain. Everything was fine after that.

Truck did well but it was certainly the farthest I’ve driven it in a stretch, about 200 miles. Kept imagining some sort of catastrophic failure but it all went well.

As far as the pick up tube. I know in my late 40 series my pick up tube was cracked thus preventing fuel from being sucked in for lack of a better term. ( imagine sucking from a straw with a crack in it. Just throwing some ideas out. How are the fuel filters?

Swapped out the main fuel filter under the hood within the last year as a part of baselining. Haven’t gotten into the tank yet, hoping to magic bullet my way out of this.

I did look up the truck for recalls and it would appear that the tank was not done. Since that is a done deal (tanks are NLA from my understanding) I’m holding off on the whole drop the tank and all that entails.

Maybe just a drain and flush will help? Still kind of a thing though.

The carb cooling fan is on there, pointing right at the brake master. Was just thinking about that thing the other day. So, that still serves a cooling purpose I am assuming?

I'm thinking vapor lock too. Hoping a new VCV out the charcoal canister does the trick.

Cooling fan is for vapor lock. Engine has to be hot for it to come on when you shutdown. Depending on temp, it will run for 5 or more minutes after you have gotten out and walked away.

Did some reading up on it and it, like many things on mud, people have opinions on whether it does anything or not. I’ve never heard mine turn on.

Welp.
Was in the mountains most of the summer with my 40, attended SAS 8 and had a blast. Eager to head back next year with the family in Paul the 62.

When I got home after 2.5 months away, Paul fired right up. Drove around town, kids to school/sports errands etc…

Had a job up in Dallas, took Paul, all good.
Went out to far east Dallas and hung with @ceylonfj40nut for an afternoon.

Heading home I was marveling at how well the truck was running (foreboding much?)…

Stopped for kolaches in West, got back on the highway and made it to Waco when it happened.

70 mph and no gears engaging…
No warning, just intermittent working but more not working.

After a bunch of BS and not a lot of drama I got the truck back in her spot at home. Drove off the trailer and up my driveway under her own power.

Yesterday I finally decided to dig in.

The pan:

A decent amount of fines and one of the bolts that hold on the filter/screen. Whatever jack wagon that was in here last left me a 7/16” bolt forced into one of the pan bolts that promptly broke next another broken bolt that was left to be extracted by the next yokel (me).

I still had some hope until I pulled the filter and found this lovely pile of (insert word here).

Some of what came out of the filter:

It has the consistency of the shredded beef jerky we used to pretend was chew back in the day except glitteryer. Assuming it’s the better part of a clutch disc.

If your first inclination is to tell me to put an H55 in, pm me for my address so you can send me the check or I’ll give you my Venmo if old school ain’t your thing.

I’m just sharing this sh!tty tale…

No real indication, just poof.

Did the cannonball ball run up to CD’s @ceylonfj40nut with the boy yesterday to snag the donor A440 trans for this girl until I land in H55 land in the future.
Easy drive really, enjoyed road time with my son and seeing CD’s winning smile for a short spell.

I’ll be heading down to @CenTXFJ60 Jimmy's barn here shortly to start making a mess. But figured I’d let this marinate on here for a bit.

So this transmission came out of an HJ60 and will go into an FJ62. All my research says it should work, just need to swap out a few things:

- Torque Converter, pilots are slightly different sizes, hopefully swap pilots?
- valve body
- bellhousing? I’ve found mixed info on this.
- some random linkages and sensors

From what I can glean, they are the same thing with minor differences. Seems like I should be able to salvage parts from the blown one over to the donor.

Anyone else have any suggestions?

make sure CD gets that linkage rod for the transmission shifter on the left side back to CD, he’ll need it for his project and yours will be the same. No idea if the valve bodies are any different.
I would not swap your torque converter over without having it cut apart and cleaned first

Spent Saturday and a good chunk of Sunday in Jimmy’s magical barn working on the transplant.

Got done:
- Old trans out
- T case off, disassembled, mostly cleaned up and ready for a rebuild kit from Georg @orangefj45
- speaking of Georg, installed new oil pan gasket using his excellent write up
- replaced the really hard to get to O2 sensor. The “easy” one is giving me fits.
- got the “new” trans out of my truck finally. It had tipped over and spilled ATF all over central Texas
- painted the timing marks on the flex plate.

So I decided to go a different route with the trans. Found one that has “around 100 miles on a fresh Valley Hybrids/Cruiser Bros refurb”. I should change the name of this truck to Georg.

CD’s trans got to take a ride around Texas and will ultimately find a home (t case) in one of CD’s builds and will probably try and get the trans to G as a core.
