Manual swap begins
The gap in time was taken up here:

short story, the auto trans didn’t take. I’d rather not talk about it anymore.

Good news is that through the kindness of friends and mud, this truck will live on.

Mega thanks in advance to:
@CenTXFJ60
@ceylonfj40nut
@POTATO LAUNCHER
@zeeklafreek
@cruisermatt
@orangefj45
Danny
@POPO AGIE
@OlYellr
@yotadude520

I’m sure I’m forgetting someone.

This is going to be a very disjointed account of a manual swap in a FJ62.

Paul, this m’er f’er of a truck has an appetite for transmissions. Two A440f transmissions under my watch which has been short.

The wealthy version of me that owns this truck exists on a different timeline so this truck is narrowly getting saved by a bunch of generosity and an H42F donor.

This will not be a how to thread.

First up, these photos represent one less automatic in my possession and the bellhousing I picked up today. 7 hr cannonball run to Rowlett and back.

Last night I cleaned up the H42F going into Paul.
Thank you Christian. Not quite done but it was surprisingly an easy clean up to here. Just my favorite tools (SS small brush, shishkabob skewers, cut up hotel key cards and an audiobook). (Oh, and beer.) and some time.

PRO TIP: check out the photo section of Craigslist for developing trays. They are tough and great for cleaning parts in.

Picked up Nick’s trailer to move Paul to Jimmy’s yesterday, need to remember his username here. Cool dude, his 62 is the prettier version of mine. And it goes.

Anyway, he had this other bit of cheese on a snap trap I may dive into at a later date…

That H42F from BB is pretty much bullet proof. I did ~75K miles on it including 2x trips from Austin to Oaxaca. Never a blip.
There is a fad around the 5 speeds but the 4spds are sweet!!! Completely relate. My son’s 3 speed behind his 350 is plain naughty. Happy you can command any gear soon!

I’m excited. Opened it up last night and to my untrained eye it looks tight. Also, the more I’ve read up on the gearing differences between H42 and H55 I think I’ll get more advantage out of the 4 sp.
That is definitely not confirmation bias. Nope. Not at all.

Do you have all the parts needed for your swap or are you still needing some items?

Glad to see you getting this fixed along with some help from the mud community!
I think I’ve got most of everything. Some stuff is still in transit so we shall see. Fortunately (theme here) I’ll be doing the swap at Jimmy’s magical barn, if I’m shy, the well is deep and I just need to replenish.
I may be missing the trim ring around the shift cane boot though, I think that is a loose end.

The community has been embarrassingly amazing.
Truly humbling

Sounds good! I think I have my old H42 shift linkage and shifter I was going to offer if you didn't have one yet.

Linkage?
🤔

I had '64 Ford Galaxie with a 3 speed for 10 years. Can relate. :)
TeQ 3 speed mated to a 350 in his 40!!!! The gears pull hard and long! Can never beat him off the line in my tundra 5.7.

Things to look forward to @RevISK!!! Find a winding road!

Put the Tundra in Tow/Haul, that sh!t’ll get you some off the line torque!!

I’m eager as mule in heat to start slinging that stick.

So happy for you. I lurved that H42F and the only reason I went for the H55 is to try *slightly* offset the Autobahn speeds here in Germany, and generally in Europe. Excited to watch the progress from Betty transitioning to Paul. Feels so woke. 🤣
I see it like a kidney transplant.
Also, Paul is a lady so….

Thanks again Christian.

Man the tundra in tow haul is a new animal. I don’t even like towing with mine in tow haul on the bottom end.
It’s a torque monster without a load. I’ll sometimes use it up a grade in the mountains for some oomph, not a lot, but here and there.

Glad to see the trailer getting some use! Let me know when you want to haul the 2nd gen 4runner home!
