So, I’ve definitely got fuel delivery issues.
Truck won’t start in the morning (mid 70’s) but will once it warms up and the sun shines on her a bit.

I need to go through grounds more and connections, but I thought it is odd to not start when cool-ish but always start once ambient temperature is higher. Fuel expansion is my uneducated guess.

Since there is no picture to go with the spirit of this post, I’ll post this of my 12yo son learning to drive the 62. Next day we took the 40 out and he wasn’t half bad on the clutch.

For the bog, check if the egr valve is stuck open. My 62 had a horrible bog when I got it and I found the egr valve stuck wide open. I desmogged mine and it ran great after that.
So, I drove the girl down to @CenTXFJ60 ’s place today to pick up a tool and generally shoot the breeze. We (he) threw a vacuum pump on the EGR and we (he) couldn’t get it to actuate. The truck was running sluggish (it felt, nothing to compare to) on the 80 mile round trip. When I got home, I pulled the EGR to clean and diagnose and wouldn’t you know it, the gasket was like a pair of cats used it as a condom. That is to say, it was toast. Way leaky von leaksalot.

Did a general cleaning, made a gasket out of a pack of gasket sheets I bought awhile back (I so smart) and the girl is like a new truck on the quick test drive the boy and I did.

Still stumbling at idle under a load, but damn grrl, she’s got some Lizzo (juice) now!

Decided to toy with the golden screw a bit, how easy should that be to turn? This one was really easy. Put it back to where it was and ordered a bunch of hoses to continue chasing V leaks.

I’m a photographer and didn’t take any pictures except one to verify vac line routing. So here is one from my shoot in PA last week.

Still popping away at this, stuff is getting better but she rarely starts in the morning. Mid-70’s.

Going through the FSM I tested the resistance on AFM and am getting nothing on the E2-VS and E2-VC terminals. The rest check out fine.

Searches come up with a lot of info about the MAF on later models but nothing much about what I can do here.

Clean it? It NLA as far as I can tell.

Go to your local Pull-A-Part and pick up a newer AFM from a Camry... sorted A LOT out for me... also have you checked Fuel pressure regulator? I ended up refreshing ALL of the fuel components and inevitably it ended up being the AFM...

Rad, yeah, spent awhile looking at different AFM’s, specifically the MR2 one from a ‘95. Kind of spendy.

Any specific year Camry? (Looked, ‘93) I’ll dive back into your thread, pretty sure I’ve read the whole thing or at least most of it.

Thanks man…

So... I remember reading that it was a 95/96 V6 Camry... but in my thread I wrote down 93 V6 Camry multiple times... So I'm guessing it's that... a 93 V6 camry...

Well, none of my local pick and pulls have one so I’ll keep looking. A local cruiser guru @aljollano said to try MAF cleaner so I’ll try that.

Ironically (or is it coincidentally?) my shop told me my tundra needed a new MAF sensor today… that’s easy. Ordered the part and probably a 10 minute swap. Saved some coin by learning about them here. My eyes would’ve crossed if they told me that 3 days ago. I had to replace the starter on my tundra this summer while up in the mountains, 186,000 miles is pretty good but that job sucked the biggest of ass.

I love Toyota with a passion, but there are a couple of engineers I’d like to treat to a knuckle sandwich.

Going through my grounds, and noticed the ground cable from the starter to frame is kind of weenie. Had an extra @Fourrunner cable from my fj40 order and it’s much beefier, was going to swap those out but couldn’t get the ground bolt off the starter. Fearing I’d snap it, I’m soaking it in Corrosion X and may try the impact tomorrow, just no good angle to get leverage in there.

The difference in cable size is almost comical.

You can never have too many grounds or too heavy of cable.

When I installed a 200-amp alternator in my 40, I also put on 2/0 ground cables from the starter to the frame, the engine block to the frame, and from the alternator to the frame and the engine block.

Agreed on grounds.
The starter sounds like it’s struggling a bit, especially compared to my 40 with the @Fourrunner cables, which is why I dove in to start cleaning up grounds. I was pretty surprised at how small that ground cable is.

I’ll definitely be ordering up a kit for this girl once the necessities are covered.

Hey.

Going through vacuum hose swap and can’t figure out where this goes, was unplugged when I traced it:

Sterile finger pointing to where it came from off the air cleaner housing.

Digging around but hope y’all can help.

FSM doesn’t show this connection.

For future reference, that hose goes to the distributor.

@RevISK Could you post the part number of your old MAF? If you still need one I do have a spare came out of an early 90's 4runner I have tested it and it works.
That picture of your son driving reminds me of ME at that age only I drive a 4 speed truck.

I taught him to drive my 40 the next day. Wouldn’t let him out on the freeway yet but if something bad went down, he could get us down the road.

I will check when I get home, not sure if it fits a flat rate USPS box.

I’ve read that several models will work, ‘95 MR2, ‘93 Corolla and I think I remember seeing that certain V6 truck years would work too.

I’ve change 90% of my hoses and have increased my vacuum from 12.5 to around 15 but she’s still rough at idle. Runs fantastic when going, just doesn’t like to be stopped.

I’m about to revisit the TPS because I’m still getting a code 51 after that adjustment.

Round and round we go…

For the record… the AFM that was in my 62 before I replaced with the Camry V6 one… it was probably from a Corolla. 👎🏾 even after passing all of the AFM tests in the FSM… my issues only got fixed when I replaced it.

Here it is, part number is not too close but I guess it doesn't matter. I can test it again on my truck if you want it, it is sealed and never been opened.

I think the important part is that it’s for the same or similar sized engine, right?
