We put our work up for QA and they have 30 minutes. After that I call their lead.
I just went back to my A1C Pell days. Shît changed after I grew up

Got home late last night from the water park excursion. I filled her up with Toyota Red, as my daughter would say, “Obvi.” Gave her 8qts Mobil Delvac 15W-40, topped off the PS steering reservoir. Did not touch the transmission fluid because the dipstick is indicating plenty in it still.

After an overnight static leak check, I was leaking from the oil cooler, two aft nuts on the left side of the engine.

Removed forward exhaust manifold and gave all the hardware an extra bit of love and that seems to have worked. I torqued everything to FSM spec but who knows why it began leaking. I used all new gaskets too. Looks good after about an hour but I’ll let it rest for a bit before putting it back together for the initial engine prime and start.

QA FAIL.

Leak check #2 fail for fuel leak at aft fuel filter banjo bolt. Failed to properly torque upon install. Fuel pissed everywhere.

QA find: Cracked distributor cap.

Had one on the shelf:

Engine is primed. Have good oil pressure.

Will try start #2. Wish us luck!

Second start successful but have major fuel leak at aft of fuel rail and shît loads of white smoke which I assume is normal.

QA FAIL: I messed up setting the timing when installing the distributor. I followed the FSM of course, I viewed videos online, thank you OTRAMM, reviewed mud, and somehow I still managed to be off a tooth.

I checked timing and my timing mark is about two inches forward of the timing marks on my timing cover. Yikes. That might be two teeth off. I have to pull it apart and try again.

But hey, she started! She smokes like hell though. Eager to hear your thoughts. I’m hoping the smoke will clear after a few more starts and time running.

When mine was rebuilt the 6th injector leaked. Was lazy when fixing it at first. Just loosened it enough to switch out and the others started leaking 🤦🏽‍♂️. Had to pull the rail and set everything in at the same time.

I found the leak at #6 and rectified. The banjo needed a little more oomph. I must’ve skipped my Wheaties the day I went to torque all the banjos on my fuel filter and rail.

My timing is forked. I am adjusting not but I took the distributor cap off and am at 0 degrees TDC per FSM and my distributor rotor seems to be in the correct location by initial appearances.

Edit: it is too far counter-clockwise by a tooth. need to restab it.

It sounds really good !! I don't think there should be that much smoke on a all new motor /short block. Then again I could be wrong.

Sorry I'm not more helpful.

No worries, and thank you! I'm stoked that we got her to start. I am definitely a tooth off looking at that picture I posted above. I will adjust and try again! As for the smoke, who knows. I probably blew another HG.

Start #4 video. Smoke is dissipating and engine is timed. How does it sound to you guys?

Sounds good Pell
It was probably just burning off Assembly lube. 😉

I noticed some power steering whine I’ve not had before. Time to check for leaks and top off as I go.

Special thanks goes to the following:
@BILT4ME for the late night calls and texts.
@Broski @baldilocks @White Sheep @PNWTreeOctopus @truthdetector @davidp14 @Feldrian @Somebodyelse5 @Dusten @suzuguru @slow95z @OGBeno @TYM4FUN @MrMikeyG for all the nuggets of help, words of wisdom and encouragement, and most importantly, shît talking to help me along this ride.

Yes, I used to turn wrenches in the USAF and I was very good at my job. I troubleshot with the best of them and ran jets on the trim pad and did crazy shît I should have never done. But this is the first time I’ve ever embarked on an automotive journey of this magnitude. After it’s all said and done, I couldn’t have done it without my wife and you a$$holes laughing along the way with me or laughing at me. Not sure which at times.

I completed the job without leftovers parts, nuts or bolts or washers. She sounds good and seems to run well.
However, I popped a code 24 but that will be for another day. I have to purchase a pair of plane tickets, fly out to AZ, make a pit stop with Zuk and drop off some diffs for regearing then come back to drag the cruiser for some much needed paint and some minor bodywork with my painter.

@Somebodyelse5, might need your help for some logistics when I arrive at Sky Harbor but I’ll hit you up SEPCOR.

Time to smoke my cigar and enjoy a thick pour pf Lagavulin.

Thanks everybody!

Congratulations!! You should be damn proud of yourself.
Thank you for allowing us to follow along....and occasionally heckle.
Assembly lube sounds like a reasonable explanation for the startup smoke but I don't know s***. I know new cars smell funny when you rev them for the first few thousand miles. I always kinda blamed it on assembly lube. But again wtf do I know?

!

Say the word, i’m about 15 minutes from sky harbor. Make sure to watch for the KC135’s in 161st Air Refueling Wing stationed there!

If you want to ship diffs to me (or have me pick them up local) I’m happy to deliver to Zuk if that’s what you need

Sounds fine to me, and glad the smoke disappeared. I was worried with you, as it was a lot. Great job man. I know you feel accomplished, because I know I did. You will love how great it drives.
