Since I had it all freshened up and the salt is off the roads, I decided to drive it to work - about 40 mins, mostly highway.

Halfway there it was making a louder than normal ratatatat sound with some vibration at high speed. I didn’t think much of it. Left to go home, in a hurry and it happened again, only over 50 or so. Slowed down and when taking my foot off accelerator it got worse. After another 10 mins I decided I had to pull over. Took an off ramp and went to look under the car and found the culprit immediately.

Fortunately, I Found a mechanic around the corner who had some bolts and got her home.

Close one

Gonna put some locktite on this time and double check the torque specs.

I've had the same thing happen to me in my 55.
Tighter torque and loctite has been good for a year now.

BTW, what is the name of that Treehouse beer with he 40 on the can?

Good to know. The other end seems looser than it should be so I think I’ve got more investigating to do. The beer from treehouse is Wanderer

Went to replace the nuts and bolts on the pinion flange with the correct size, but sometimes you just don’t feel like doing the work yourself. Decided to let a pro handle it instead. He then moved on to the brakes on the 4Runner

That's awesome. My son just turned 18 and I don't think learned to appreciate wrenching with Dad until recently. Good for you for passing on the skillset!

Goldbug got some new shoes. Love the Steelies with caps. Not sure if I’m sold on the tires.

Before: Toyo Open Country MT 33-12.5-15 and ugly ass 90s rims
After: KO2s on steelies

Oh yeah - - much better.

Inspiring!! I'm searching thru all your photos cause mine is a 78 and iin pieces, I'll probably be hitting you up for location of certain underhood things. I have a 78 cowl and frame, 86 F2, 70 3/4 tub and front end. Oh, 70 doors with a 78 hardtop! It's gonna be a true Mutt.

My underhood is pretty stock '78 (for the moment as I consider Sniper etc)

Happy to help with that as well.
Yeah, @Chestcutter or @GA Architect might be better sources. My under the hood area is not quite stock. I’ve got a F and a half engine from ‘75 I think and an aisin carb from a different year too. Most of the rest is right though I think.

But lots of us happy to help when you get there. Good luck with the project @greenbeasty

Installed the new motor mounts from SOR. One of the front ones had a bizarre manufacturing defect but they were great about it. I sent them a pic and they sent me a new one, didn’t even want the bad one back. Unfortunately didn’t notice any real difference in ride quality. Thinking shims and body mounts and maybe new steering stabilizer may be the next ones to tackle.

@Goldbug you will notice a difference in ride quality when you change out the body mounts. The ripple effect or aftershock effect when hitting a bump dissapears. Love your thread. Keep up the good work

After debating it for a year, I pulled the trigger on a new dash pad. Went with OEM from my preferred dealer who’s been good to me and shipped it for next to nothing. I know it’s a pure cosmetic play that won’t do anything to the ride quality, but it does seem to drive a bit smoother....

Found 4 quarters from 1972, a razor blade, a lamp I didn’t recognize, and two screws. Can’t figure out if they are long lost behind the dash or if I removed them during disassembly and can’t figure out where to put them back.
