I am rebuilding a set of 78 axles to have a dual circuit, disc/drum set up in my 1961 FJ40. @Rainman is making a new set of brake lines for it. I originally was going to just run the drums and convert to a dual circuit system, so I had already ordered a new Drum/drum MC and a firewall adapter from Mark @65swb45.

Now that I am going to discs, I will need to do something else for an MC.

1. I have read on here that I can pull the residual valve out of the front circuit on this MC and use that with the disc front. Is this true? Is this a stupid thing to do from a safety and functionality standpoint? If it isn't, can anyone explain to this at best :banana: mechanic how to do it so I don't die in a flaming wreck?

2. I'm happy to move this MC along on the forum to someone else who could use and just buy the appropriate MC. I'd rather not cut the rib off the firewall, so am planning to at least try this unboosted for now. On boosted set-ups, the non-ABS early 80 series appears to be the consensus. Does that hold for non-boosted as well? Any better options?I found this thread from @cruiseroutfit, and a few others, but nothing I could find specific for a non-boosted set-up. @wngrog, didn't patina start out this way? Any thoughts?

Thanks for the help.

My 1970 40 has GM 3/4 ton calipers in front & GM metric cailpers out back( similar to the fronts just a bit smaller) on that M/C and it works well. I tried to get the residual valve out but couldnt open it up so I left em in, never been a problem. 1 thing I will add, don't pressure wash the calipers when cleaning vehicle, every time it causes one of the calipers to stick while sitting over winter and then they drag requiring relacement in the spring. I think I could rebuild them but for 36 bucks I'll just swap em out.

I'm wondering why no one has made a bracket to run the same calipers on the rear axle as in the disk brake front? It would only make sense to have the same front and back, all Toyota while using the standard 78 OEM power booster and a dual circuit master. IDK, maybe there is some reason this won't work and if there is, I'd like to know because I am going to be diving into this soon as well.

JT Outfitters adapter and a non ABS 80 master is the go-to setup if you don’t want a booster.
I have the adapter from MarkA @65swb45 already, so good to go there. I like simple, and not having to lengthen the rod, cut the firewall rib, etc is simple. I'm running C rated 30" tires and won't be going up from there, so not a ton of weight to haul to a stop. I know you went to a booster, so you must have felt the non-boosted was not enough. I've also seen your posts pulling 80 mph in Patina. For plodding around the national park at 45 mph max, what are your thoughts? Thanks for the help.

@navydivedoc Did you ever install the non-boosted MC with front disc brakes on this 40 before you sold it?

I didn't get to it. But, the parts went to @Pigeaten and I believe he is now running it non-boosted on the FJ55 I sold to him. With FJ60 front discs.

if you're going with a booster for power brakes.....why not just an oe master for a 76-something 40 series?
I really want to go non-boosted on my '69 when I upgrade to dual circuit and front discs due to space, cost, looks. There are a few that have done it and reported satisfactory results going Disc/drum, F/R, and non-boosted with the appropriate master cylinder. Just fishing for more opinions.

The reason I did not was I wanted to try not to have to cut my early firewall up on the 45. Worked great.

Is this true for 4 wheel drum as well? It looks like there are a lot of mc options. But I haven't been able to find info on which works best if I'm keeping the drums on my 69.

No. With drums you need a built in residual valve.
What about stock disc front/drum rear?

On my ‘83 HJ47 I discovered that the LSPV had leaked all over the garage floor. I am starting to look at redoing the brakes completely, and was thinking of just going totally stock, but the stock booster ( 44610-60210 ) seems to be NLA.

City Racer sells boosters that seem to work well… no personal experience.

4Runner boosters work well.

I’m running an 80 series booster & master. Works well (perhaps too well by some standards).

I ran a stock Drum/Drum master with first the front residual valve and then the rear residual valve removed. 18 years on the front and 15 years on the rear before swapping in the 80 series booster. No problem running the master for all those years so go for it.

Would this be the right booster?

And this the right MC?

Or this one, since you said "dual"?
