I am going to put a HFS 4" lift on my 70' fj40 and I am wondering what size tires I should run on it? I do not want to cut anything, so what size?

31's.

They will take you everywhere you should go.

You can't run 31's at many TLCA events in California. I believe 32's are minimum.

Who is saying anything about attending any TLCA events?

Does this person intend on using their truck off road?

I do not know that, and besides, it is a pretty vague question, hence why I stated that 31” tires will take you everywhere you should go.....

Is that Rubicon event the only event in CA? Seems to me that there are a couple others.....

And just a further side note on this.....

A stock YJ went through the 'con with 31's, open diffs and sway bar disconnects back in the early 90's......

Actually-I've seen some pretty "small" rigs go through over the years, and I'm not sure where the TLCA comes up with the 33 inch minimum. My first time, I had 33s and no lockers and no gear reduction. Had a blast. I saw a guy last year go through on a basically stock FJ40. He had mostly mastered momentum and wasn't afraid to take a tug here and there.

Still, the trail is easier with bigger tires and more lift. It depends on how much you want to work, and how many dings you want in your sheet metal.

With a 4 inch lift on a stock truck, 31' might look silly, but 33's might rub. This might be a good place to run 33 X 9.5s. That way the proportions are right and there will be less need to cut anything.

If you plan to take it up in the rocks, than cutting the body will be the least of your concerns!

My first time through the Rube was in my 82 CJ 8 with 31"s on open difs. I learned about departure angles. I think I took all the bypasses.

Poser is right that 31" will take most places your SHOULD go.

I went places I probably shouldn't with my 33" and I really go for it with my 35"s. I never got stuck with 31"s because I stayed on the beginer trails.

I run 33x10.50s with an OME 2.5" lift and 4+Plus shackles that are 3/4" over stock and I have not seen rubbing. I also run U-Bolt flips on both axles from 4+Plus which appear to keep the tires from hitting the front fenders or rear wheel wells. I will say that the sidewall clearance on the rear tires when they are stuffed into the wheel well is very close.

There have been some events here in Arizona that required 35’s as a minimum.

This question is always easy to answer...

SS TSL 32 x 10.50. Works everytime... and looks great too! And this pic shows them with your HFS 4 inch lift.

Definetly go with 33's if you got a 4'' lift... there's no reason for the lift kit if your only planning on running 31'' tires, might as well take the money from the lift kit and buy a rear locker!

I'm presently running a 4'' kit with 33''x9.5 muds with no rubbing and wich I had bought 35's... just my 2cents.

Hi All:

I have three buddies running the "HFS" four inch lift suspension from CCOT. Two rigs have 35X12.5R15 inch tires, while the other one runs 33X12.5.

It seems that the 35s clear fine with this lift kit. I guess it boils down to how much $$ you want to spend.

Regards,

Alan

That don't count;), it's been cut at the rear. Next question is when do you start breaking stuff or your gear ratio is effected because the tire is too big. 33 is your best bet but mind you once you go with 33's you are going want to go with 35's eventually:).

I have the same delima so this what I did. My Preference is 35's so I bought used 33's and they fit nicely on 4" Alcan springs and the rear quarters have not been cut. I want to see if I going to like them. After fitting 33's in mine, I'm thinking 34's will also work.
