It depends on the tire... Most 285/75/16 say they require a min of 8" width rim. You would have to look up the particular tire to know for sure.

But, that being said, I used to run 285/75/16 on the stock 7" rim and had no problem with them. You probably want to keep the air pressure a little lower than you normally would to keep the center from wearing too quickly. But even on long desert trips at 12 psi I never had one roll off the rim.

I've moved on from the 76 wagon, for reasons to be explained later when I get a chance to get the thread going, and traded her in for the new double cab. We only get the V6 petrol or the 1HZ diesel in the GCC. No V8 diesel here. I opted for the 1HZ.

Its a 2014 HZJ79 with a 1HZ diesel, power windows, FF + RR factory diff locks, and the OEM raised air intake. The rest includes 2" OME lift, OEM 16X6.5 steelies, and Michelin XL 9.00R16 tires, measured at 36.5". These were hard to source!

We never got the 1HDT in the GCC as far as I am aware, unless they come in the Coaster busses. All 70 series now are with either the 1GR petrol or the 1HZ diesel, of which the 1GR sells in the majority, by far. The 1GR gets the H150 box while the 1HZ gets the R151F, supposedly with improved shafts.

Getting the OME's fitted



Michelin XL's arrived, and fitted to Toyota steelies. Each tire alone weighs 76lbs!



Running 50mm spacers in the rear, to keep the track the same as the front. I pulled these off the 76 series before I sold it



This is how she sat with new rubber and only OME 2" lift on the front. The rear springs were on back order, so right now it sits on the stock rear leafs.



Rear 2" leafs arrived and installed. And the wooden trim GCC spec side stripes were removed!

Had a rear rack built to fit a RTT. Idea was to make it as low as possible so that the RTT sits flush with the roof of the cab. Unfortunately, because the spare tire measures 36.5, we had to make the rack high enough that if I need to remove the spare tire I can roll it under RTT on the truck bed. The RTT now sits about 6" above the roof line of the cab.

Balloon jack strapped around spare tire. Always come in handy in the dunes when a standard Hi-Lift will not work.

We went out on a trip recently, scouting some new trails up in the mountains south of Jeddah. It was also a good chance to escape the heat and humidity as we climbed up to 8,100ft.

Getting up there was a touch of a struggle as the 1HZ was blowing black smoke up the steep mountain pass on the way to the trail. Mainly under acceleration as we come out of the hairpin bends in 2nd gear. My mate in his 76 1GR wagon was in 3rd gear the whole way up moving effortlessly. Never mind I say to myself, I love the pull of the diesel, the noise it makes, and the fact that its different. And of course, once we hit the trail, it was where it belonged; crawling seemlessly forward with minimal input from the driver, while the 1GR would lurch, lunge, and bounce forward and upwards looking somewhat out of sorts. The 1GR belongs in the dunes where revs need to be high, while the 1HZ belongs everywhere else.
