The center console is loaded up and headed to @SNLC. Thanks @gilmorneau!

Now that the donor truck has arrived its probably time to bring this thread up to speed. The new FTE purchase really threw a lot of things into a spiral that I did not really fully grasp at the time. It seemed like a no-brainer at the time....buy the engine and swap out the FT and either put that in my 77 series or sell it. Simple. Turned out not so much.

Because of the FTE, the Wholesale Auto transmission would not work so now its running around in @Outono truck. We figured it would be best to run a manual transmission so off I set on this search for the center console. That seemed simple enough. Turned out also not so simple. I’m pretty picky so I was not comfortable with the idea of something that was built or fabricated. I really wanted the OEM version. So @gilmorneau posts this HDJ80 for sale two weeks ago tonight and I had to have it.

I started thinking about what else I could use of the truck and frankly there is a lot. All of the clutch pedals, buckets, lines, etc. are present and in good condition. Plus, it has a really good HDJ80 wiring harness for the HDFT. More on that below. There would also be a frame and locking 80 series axles. I jokingly told @Onur and @SNLC that was a great starter pack for building a 79 series pickup truck. Well of course @Onur being the ultimate junky he introduces me to a guy and I bought this truck the next day.

So now I have that project going. I was going to stick the HDFT we took from the red 80 series (not the donor) in the 79 series. That did not make a lot of sense to me though. The 79 series never came with the FT so a harness would need to be fabricated. We kicked around the idea of bringing in the 1VD Diesel engine but that idea quickly wore off. The reality is I am sitting on a nice LHD OEM wiring harness for the HDJ80 (the one that came in the donor truck). The most sensible thing to do is use that harness in the red 80 series and stick back in the HDFT we took out. Which was tough for me to wrap my head around because the engine was previously installed in the truck. Again, all blame lies at the feet of this gorgeous FTE. If I had not purchased that engine this truck would probably be test driving around Idaho today.

I did place the order today for the H152 transmission and the proper bellhousing and input shaft. That will be assembled in Australia and shipped over in a few weeks. And we finally have a shifter console assembly so nothing is changing with the manual transmission. I may not be contributing much on the mechanical side but at least I can try to make you understand what’s going on in my head when I am just shoveling money down into various rabbit holes.

These types of things have a way of never going the way we expect - at least in my limited experience. Really cool to see all of these twists and turns, a lot of this is somewhat uncharted territory so that is definitely to be expected. Love the way it continues to come together though - this continues to be one of the most interesting threads on here! Thanks for continuing to share.

We could form a support group if you like.

Sounds legit...I leave my truck and Brodie together for a few hours and look what happens...

EDIT: Sorry...I'll stop derailing this thread now and go pack to trawling partsouq seeing what else I can still buy for a HJ47

Well the 1967 HDJ45 we got going in the shop should also help keep ya motivated. In the next few months it will be getting far along in that build. I can’t wait to test drive it!

Cheers

I mentioned it just now in Johns HDJ79 build thread but that belongs here really. 🙄

I am excited that with the LHD HDJ80 donor truck now here to have the option to harvest the entire wiring harness from it. I have wanted all along to make Johns 97 HDJ80 we are building as Toyota would have made it or as close as possible. Now we have every bit of wiring, relay and ECU we could need to do that. I plan to get the harnesses out of this donor truck, clean up on the bench, rewrap and install in the red 97. It is going to be even more of a real true LHD HDJ80 now vs a conversion. 😎

The 95 Euro HDJ80 even has ABS and air bags so the harnesses are perfect and missing nothing.

Cheers

Seen that truck (on your instagram), this was one was for sale for a long time from a Belgian guy who deals in Land cruisers.
How is the general condition on it? He has some other nice trucks for sale, but the pictures, infos are a bit shady in my opinion. Would be nice to know if he can be trusted before an 1800km drive to him... :)
