Is your head not rebuildable? JMO, but I'd stay away from the cheaper stuff.

Does he have heads for a 3rz? I haven’t seen them on the site. This is how my camshafts and bearing caps look on the current 3rz head.

lots of bad rz heads out there.

A lot of the high mileage ones can have possible cracked valve seats due to no one checking valve clearances.

This makes me want to start hording cylinder heads when I see trucks at the boneyard.

Look ... If money/time were no option, I'd go LCE or Yota1, but that's not always the case. If you look at some of the shops online that specialize in heads, the going price seems to be $7-800. If you do some research and the shop checks out, I think it would be worth the savings for now. Just my 2 cents.

Price for their stage 1 head with stock valves is $2,414.95
Price for stage 1 camshafts is $850

Now that wouldn’t be bad in my opinion. But the near head doesn’t come with cam buckets. So you have to buy them as well for an additional $430 bucks.

Makes a total of almost $3700 just for a fricken 4 cylinder DOHC head. Maybe I’m overreacting but that just seems crazy to me that it’s that much. For that kind of money I could get a set of heads for my 7.3 powerstroke that are fire ringed, have stainless nitrided valves and upgrades valve springs.

Maybe I’m overlooking something, and if I am please feel free to let me know.

I’m glad it’s not just me who thinks that. I knew it was going to be expensive but damn. I may end up just going with Yota1 as I’d rather not risk a cheaper head as I haven’t found a good company yet.

Is it really that hard to find a good one from a bone yard? Like an online one since none in your area?

I haven't looked in a salvage yard in a long time so I guess I lost touch with the current times.

These are all the options according to car-parts. Craigslist is bare, I’m thinking most of it can be found in FB Marketplace. I may have to make an account to see. Haven’t been on there in years.

All the machine shops that I have ever dealt with either had a stash of cores or access to cores. Do you have any connections to see if you can find a good core? If you're not in a hurry, I think more searching may find what you need at a reasonable price. Facebook seems like the most productive way these days. I don't have FB either. My neighbor is really good about selling, buying and finding stuff and has helped me out that way.

No way I'd pay those prices you posted either. Even when I was working and had more money. So I have to really scrounge for deals now. Good luck, I hope you find something.

Got some more parts in finally. Water pump, thermostat, oil pump and cover, and a Toyota head gasket kit. Also got a brand new 1998 4Runner EDW. Trying to go through a bunch of PDFs to find connectors wasn’t working for me and was a big hang up along with a busy work schedule. Hoping I can use this winter to get my own wiring diagram made.

For the connector harness I’m thinking of using the 3rz plugs on both the engine wiring harness side and the cab wiring side to keep all the old 22re engine wiring harness intact. You’ll have to excuse the aluminum foil, it wasn’t an attempt in keeping the cats off of the counters.

ya. the pdfs are great, but the back and forth can be a real pita. the hard copy definitely helps.
i built a small sub harness to go between the engine and car. that way im not cutting the permanent vehicle harness.
they all vary slightly. just depends on which parts you have for donor.

I was having hell finding the II2 (IK2 in later years plug) in the pdfs. I found it tonight and hope to spend some of this weekend figuring out what each wire does. I know I’ll have some question in the wiring as this is above my skill level but I need to learn wiring better.

I may try to track down some plugs and pins and do a conversion harness. Right now I have the full 4Runner donor interior harness at my disposal so I’d only need the 2 on the dash wiring side from the 89 wiring harness.

You and I did the same thing. I agree, the PDFs are OK, but having the printed manual is way easier on the table. The EWD manuals rock. It makes this way easier to figure out.

I’ve taken a liking to the idea of making an adapter harness. My question is, is there a way to identify the connector parts number to order one? I didn’t see any numbers on the main tow that I need from the 1989 harness. They’re the two that connect the engine wiring harness to the dash harness. For the 1998 3rz wiring I’m going to use the connectors from the old dash wiring harness I got with the swap so I thankfully don’t need to find them.

These are the two that I’ll need. I have a wiring diagram for the 89 coming tomorrow and a pdf version I can look through as well if they tell you the part number.

Ended up finding this thread for 90980-10560. I’ve found a couple websites that claim they have it and one place that is willing to sell a whole package of them for $70. I’ve had no luck with finding the 90980-10453 connector so I may just end up robbing them off of my 22re wiring harness. I was trying to keep it intact but if I ever needed to use it again I’d just buy some generic connectors and use them if needed.

Anybody got a lead on a pair of these Sumitomo brand connectors (Toyota part# 90980-10560 and 90980-10561)? The Sumitomo part# is 6240-5033 if that helps. I'm trying to make up a pigtail for auxiliary lights on my 1992 HZJ73. Attached are two pictures for reference. Any leads or help is...

In other news, my 1989 “great condition, no pages missing” EDW showed up. It’s clearly missing pages and was misrepresented in the eBay add so I’m working with the seller to get that fixed. I do have a EDW for a 1989 4Runner but I believe they’re different due to the gauge cluster being a different style from the 1989 Pickup.
