Sorry I missed you on your way thru GA. :frown: We got back on the cruiser this week. :bounce: I need help with the front axle rebuild. I have read several sources that I could find about how to do it and have one main question that no one mentioned but is discussed in the factory manual. Shims. Without the factory tool that is shown in the manual, how will I figure out which shims to use on the top and bottom? :confused: I understand what the tool does etc, but without a tool like that, is there a trick or just do it by feel or what? Also, do I need the tool that measures the resistance on the knuckle, or again, is that by feel? Memo, my mech. says to just build it and we will figure it out, but that is always the way he does sh@#$t and it sometimes is assbackwards and I really don't want to screw this up. Too much cash invested in parts and time for it not to turn out perfect. So help would really be appreciated. And, yes I did a search and could not find an answer. Thanks
 
FYI The bottom shim is to center the axle to the knuckle, and the upper sets the bearing preload. I think for the most part that people just keep track of how they came out and reuse them.

All you need to test the bearing preload is a hand held fish scale thingy. Not much to it, I did my dad's mini truck this year and the hardest part was getting the dang axle back in. :cheers:

unfortunately that is not an option bc i was not the one who tore it apart so i have to figure out what to do about the shims. when i did a search i did see a couple of posts saying the the fish scale was not the same as the yota tool. bearings will be here Monday so i have to figure out what to do with the shims by then. can anyone else help?
 
SST is for determining axle center, scale is to set pre-load. My problem is I don't have an SST and I was not the person who tore down the axle so I can't guess what was before. But I have some of the new seals from Marlin coming. Just need help figuring what is my best guess is you will for center.
 
Progress

Rolled back the speedo to 0000 and began cleaning the head unit up. Can anyone tell me where I can find the rubber channel that holds the glass in the speedo frame? Mine is dry rotted and I want to replace it. I also need the rubber that goes between the black face panel and the frame. It is like a mini 1/4 round piece of rubber.

I have the Toyota SST if you need to borrow it. I won't be able to send it till November though if you want to wait. PM me for info.
 
Do you guys that know your stuff and/or have the tool think I am crazy to do it without the tool? I have been told by a couple of guys that if I use the new seals from Marlin it is not absolutely necessary. I have all the parts and want to move forward, but not at the expense of doing it wrong. :(
 
The closer you are to centered the longer the seal will last no matter who's seal it is.

Does that mean it's "wrong"? Not necessarily but it may not last as long.
 
I don't know if FoxFab has the bushings or not. I've got an extra set of hinges laying around somewhere in my cruiserpile....I'll see if any are worth using. Gimme a few days to get to it though :) My LV stuff is packed in the corner of the garage behind all of the new FJ40 crap :) LOL

Need to get this 40 outahere so I can get back to my LV! :)

Good luck on the axles. I didn't take mine apart...just-regreased everything and new oil. Gears were quiet and in good shape prior to painting, so I didn't mess with it.

i would have never messed with them bc they were out of a low mileage FJ55, but my EX mech. who was dumber than a rock took it upon himself to tear into them one day when i never asked him to. which is one of the reasons he is EX. the great news is that we got the axle back together tonight with all new stuff inside so it is good as new, or close to it at least. and we were able to paint it better apart. pics will come soon. goal is to be hanging axles next week. :bounce::bounce:

thanks for the link. so if i understand this, i would take my hinges which had the poly bushings and modify them for these bronze bushings? sounds a little complicated, but agreeably better. however, my hinges are in great shape and once i install the poly or what ever bushings, honestly, as little as i drive, they would never wear out. but i have to find them first.
