I need help with regards to nuts and bolts. I know this has been discussed in other parts of the forum, but I wanted it here on the LV. What are most guys going with, Cadmimum Plated or Stainless Steel. I know the canned response will be if you want it orginal use CP but I have found that CP is not available in all shapes and sizes vs. SS is so I did not want to have mixed colors. Has anyone found Metric CP in all sizes? Bolt Depot and McMaser-Carr do not have them? Also, can anyone tell me the size of the bolts that mount the body to the frame? 10mm x ?

thank you bull. next question which i am sure Billmark would know, but, can SS be plated yellow cad? has anyone found a source that sells "new" metric in yellow cad with high strength bolts? every place i checked has one or the other so i am guessing high strength bolts can not be yellow cad plated? as for old bolts etc, everything that came off my truck was rusted crap, 40 years old, so i will be buying new. the bolts that hold the hinges to the body definitely need to be high strength, but they look like they were originally yellow cad. also, were they painted over from the factory or not? of course mine had paint from a respray.

Progress

Progress has been slow due to my bad back. I am not able to work on the LV at all so all the work has to be done by my mechanic (Memo) and he stays pretty busy. But we have been pecking along and are just about ready for everything to the powder coaters. We have been pulling out all the misc. parts and checking them for any repairs that are needed before they get pc'ed. The frame is ready. We ground down all the rough spots and worked them as much as possible so once they get pc'ed they will be as smooth as possible. We also straightened many parts of the frame that were bent over the years and also added the new power steering bracket supplied by Bill Dorry. The OME suspension parts are in as well as most all the parts needed to get the frame rolling. The only parts I am having trouble finding are the front and rear shackles so if anyone knows where some are let me know. I have to say Memo is really incredible. He has taken parts that where really messed up and made them look almost new. I will try to post pics of one of the hub caps that he just spent a few minutes pecking at it. It will need re-chroming, but for now it looks really good and it is really impressive when you see what it started out looking like. You can see the insides of the frame to see what it started as. It should really look great after the pc'er gets done. :bounce:

Progress

work continues even thou no posts to speak of. my mech has been doing a good job and i brought in another mech. bc he was too busy to keep up with our work stuff. so now they have caught up and gotten a pretty good jump on the lv. here are some pics. we finally pulled the donor eng, axles and transmission from the 55. blasted those and shot them with enamel primer while they are rebuilt. working on cleaning up the engine. frame is ready to go to pc. just trying to get all the small parts ready to go at the same time. some of them needed a little straightening and some crack repairs etc. maybe this week.

more 2

placed a huge parts order with SOR and MAF. should be here this week. debating whether to use the air filter cover from the 55 vs. the orig. from the 45. like the old look but need to move it across the valve cover bc of a/c compressor space. anyone do this, pics? if we use the one from the 55 we will close off the metal nipples from most of the smog crap. but i like the idea of the old one, just need to figure out how to do it. i was thinking about taking two and welding them together to form one long one that would reach across the valve cover. the pics are before we tear down the motor. just some pre-cleaning.

Work continues

We started media blasting today. The center of the body is beautiful. Not so nice along the outside edges, but it can all be repaired as we know. We are planning on blasting all day. The big compressor makes fast work tho. Thankfully, this cruiser received undercoating at some point. For the most part it worked, except the outer areas as noted. Too bad they did not do more undercoating, sure would have made my job simpler. Also sorting thru all the parts to send out the chrome and cadmium to be redone. We will have to do some repairs to the door opening linkages. Apparently they were not very well designed and several are broken in the same spot. I did find some that were not broken out of the parts bin. Engine work is proceeding. A few more parts to go and then we will be waiting for cadmium stuff etc. I also decided to blast and paint the frame in-house vs. powder coating so we will be doing that this weekend.
