This is my first Toyota diesel and I have no books on it so I am unsure of the cold starting procedure. My antique 6BT Cummins has an air heater and a dash indicator with "wait to start". My understanding is the13BT is also direct injected with no glow plugs and an air heater. I do not see an indicator referencing a preheat cycle.

Give the newb some tips......:)

Not well enough, apparently. :flipoff2: A thread that discusses this was just mentioned--TODAY in fact.

You should have asked this two days ago. I would have told you to come up to the shop and I'd explain it to you with visual aids and everything!

The glow screen has a timer, that is automatic. The Timer senses the key position (IGN and START IIRC), as well as water temperature. If the water temp is cold (roughly freezing) then it will glow the screen--and the glow schedule depends on just how cold the water temp is. On the 12HT (which is probably identical to the 13BT in this regard) the maximum duration is 20 seconds.

If you want to test it out, as if it was supremely cold, disconnect the water temp sensor (the one in the oil cooler, not the thermostat housing), and turn the key on. Disconnecting that plug is simulating an infinitely cold water temp, so will command the maximum duration glow--which should make it clear to you where the glow indicator is.

Thank you Dan.

So there should be a corresponding dash indicator?

I just got this thing Sunday night and it is still waiting for a plate so I have had little time to bond with it......In fact I have yet to see it in daylight...

Hey Dan,

Congratulations on the BJ74...seems like a REALLY clean truck.

On my BJ70 (with a 3B and superglow system) the dash light shown as "PRE HEAT" would light up indicating a wait time and then would extinguish to indicate that it is ready for crank. The superglow system works much like Dan (DanS HJ45) mentioned sensing the coolant temperature and calculating the required glow time based on coolant temperature (which correlates to the outside temperature).

Not sure if the BJ74 with the 13BT has the same dash indicator lights as the BJ70, but I thought I would post in an attempt to help :)

Congratulations once more and hope you enjoy the truck!

Thank you very much. I do not recall seeing that indicator on my dash but, as I mentioned, I have had virtually no time to bond with this thing. You are correct it is very clean and just needs to have a couple trail bruises cleaned up to make it buff.

If you live in a cold climate:You should wait for your timer to pre-heat ,once the light goes out , turn key to start ...no sense trying to run two systems at once.
If you cannot find an indicator experiment with times before turning from pre-heat to start. Some diesels like a little throttle while others are happy without.
When cold starting use your nose and eyes to sniff out fuel problems: No fuel=No Smoke and/or Diesel Smell. To solve this try the throttle, check for prime(hence clear fuel line from filter to IP) and if really cold add fuel conditioner.

I've seen to many people try to glow and start at the same time wasting precious battery power on a winter day.
On cold days -30C we may glow an extra cycle or two for our 12v starter 1HZ's and any other diesel in the fleet.

On the other hand a 24v starter equipped 1hdt kicks like a mule and starts near instantly. Last falls addition of a circulating coolant heater offer instant warmth as well

Well it does indeed have the same indicator as your pic shows. It has been in the low 40s which is likely not cold enough to activate the heater.

Wouldnt it be best to heat and start a 13BT at the same time, since the heater is in the intake heating the air, no point heating it and waiting like a 1HZ which has plugs in the cylinder heat the air and cylinder.

You should let it do its cycle it still takes a few seconds for the screen to heat up it is a short cycle and indicated when the dash light goes out there is 2 screens or one screen split into 2 sections which allow a preglow and after glow.
In moderate temps the glow indicator will barely blip on the dash since the sensor tells the system the preglow its not needed.

Dont expect to see the light for more than a second until it gets below -10c... at 0c you're lucky if you manage to hear the relay klick...

We are talking cold, warm engines don't care so they shut off the glow system whether glow plugs or screen.
The screen is like a toaster...takes time to get hot, then gradually shuts down. Try both methods, the wait is worth it especially when you may only get one chance!

Great!

I wish my truck was as clean as this one.

Congrats again, Dan!

P.S. What plans do you have for the BJ74?

I am going to remove the roof rack brackets from the FRP and fix the holes. One drip rail also needs some love. I will get the trail bruises taken care of, fill the holes in the hood and straighten it out. I am going to see one of those vehicle wrap places and find out if they can replicate the stripes. After that it's a respray of the original gold and stripes back on if possible.

I will run my steel 16x8 80 wheels (probably need to space them out) and put a rear bumper on it with dual swingouts (like a Slee) and then I will putt around town answering a million questions every time I stop someplace......

Hahaha...sounds like a great plan!

I would love to see some photos of your truck with the 16x8 80 series wheels.

Just for reference, attached is a photo of a 2000 or 2001 FZJ70 with the same wheels from a friend back home.

Based on how far the front hub is sticking out those do not appear to be spaced out. I wonder if that has wider axles?
