When I lived in NY I had no money for tools either. But their are ways to get decent tools on a budget. I found a englo air compressor on craigs for 60 bucks. It is older than me and pretty heavy. Its made more more construction stuff, but it was just adequate for air tools. Im pretty sure it will last forever. Check craigs and you can often find a great deal on a compressor for less than 100 bucks every other month. Good used air tools can be found on ebay all day long. HF sockets actually are pretty good, in fact a fair amount of HF tools are decent, just check the online reviews and that usually reveals if its junk or not.
Another thing, since you are in the rust belt, do all you can to treat the vehicle before it rusts. Get some por 15 or product of your choice and coat the frame. Take the interior panels off and apply protection to areas where rust typically starts, especially inside the rear quarter panels. The A pillars and roof seams also rust so you may want to look into working on those. Look at all spotwelded seams, for rust that is starting and treat it with rust converter and a good coating of por15 or the like. Taking preventative rust measures is far far less expensive than taking care of it once it has become cancerous, and will keep the truck looking good for a long time. fj60 sheetmetal doesn't mix well with the north east if left to its own devices.
 
Someone at one time did an oil seal to the frame. It coated in a black residue that can rub off onto clothing tho I have yet to have it happen to me, the PO said it a few times.
 
So lets see after the gear box I picked up four used Skyjacker nitro shocks (yup, remember poor mama cruiser lover here) from a fellow club member Jason, (@jaydufe) and was able make two fit in the rear as they were all eyelets.

Shocks: I picked up new Pro Comps for the front from Summit I believe. I'll come across the receipt as some point and add it in. I was not 100% sure of the lift on the truck. PO said something around 2" but not entirety sure as I never got any paperwork mailed to me about the truck as promised. And truck is sitting on 35's. I was able to clean off the worn shocks enough to come up with some numbers and was able to find an almost exact swap. I gather some of you did not miss the appearance of the fronts near the gear box. Ugly, leaking and spent and zero bushings so they literally clanked as I drove on bumpy roads.
That chore was fun. First time I actually got my moms old 27,000rpm dremel in use. I had no choice but to cut through the top nuts on both. Sparks are fun!
Bit by bit she is getting a make over. I get vastly more involved in rebuilding as the months go by.

Fusible Link: Some point before or after this I decided to rebuild my fusible link as it was wired all sorts of ghetto and screwy. I read many threads the Coolerman has out there and emailed him regarding gauge sizes ect so I understood what I needed to do. I actually ended up having to literally open and reuse the metal female terminal end of the link as Napa did not have one wide or long enough to fit in the plug (shown in picture). If it wasn't for my old friend I mentioned earlier, I would possibly not have thought to do that. "Can you reuse it?" Ah, why yes, I think I can. ;)

Terminals: I replaced that positive terminal as well with better stuff, I found on Amazon. I had already replaced the negative and it is the older style type which is good enough for now.

Electrical stinks. I loath it the most so far. I have two relays along my inner left fender which apparently are necessary to be grounded inside the cab under the fuse box so I have parking lights. Both blinkers and parking lights had suddenly went on me a few weeks before... blinkers were the hazard fuse... My kid I think tweaked something (rule, don't let toddler in driver seat and not watch him like a hawk). So after reattaching that and replacing the fuse, me and the mutts went for a drive. One day I will delve into this and make it right. Some day. Then found the Mystery Machine at the Boom Box fair in Willimantic CT with my girlfriend the same weekend.
Sorry folks my pixs are all mixed up and will figure out how to make smaller too as some point.

.5mm fusible link = 20ga fusible link (GREEN FL wire )
.85 mm fusible link = 18ga fusible link (RED wire)
1.0mm fusible link = 16ga fusible link
1.25mm fusible link = 16ga fusible link
2.0mm fusible link = 14 ga fusible link

Hard to find those sizes but I've seen small sections available on ebay, Amazon. Probably won't be able to find the correct colors, though.

And FWIW, when I got my first FJ60, the FL had been fried like yours and someone had by-passed it with SOLID STRAIGHT WIRE! :eek: - At least they fused yours.

Thanks! I was able to replace the middle green to white section (mind you that is only half the entire fusible link) via my dealership... 90982-08135, not cheap at $58.00 back on 7/01/16. And yeah I have the corrected diagram I drew somewhere in my mess of Toyota fsm's and a binder of receipts here on my desk... I am not the most organized lady, but its my chaos and I get it.

the wiring on my 60 is so ghetto rigged it scares me to touch. But this is motivation to figure out whats going on. wiring and electrical is far from my specialty
 
Prior to this I was all set to drive my 60 to the PA for the Coal Mine Cruiser Classic event in Rausch Creek but then I had the unlucky experience to have my neutral go from the pole at the street to my house. I had some crazy power fluctuations and flickering so called my friend and explained what was happening and he told me to call the electric company, that it sounded like I was losing a leg to my house. Called them and then after a few more minutes I could smell something burning and I went to my fuse panel in the basement and shut everything down. The electric company arrived and as me and the guy stood in the yard we both turned our noses to the air and he immediately warned me not to be nervous but I was losing my neutral then and there and he was gonna pull the meter off the house. BIG friggen deal. I grabbed my son and locked up the dogs in the crates and stood in the yard as the fire department arrived to do an evaluation of my walls.
What a full on PITA.
So I didn't make it to PA. It didn't seem fair to make my gf do the animal care (I have the two dogs, two cats, chickens and ducks) all angst up without all the appliances ect working while I went and whooped it up states away... she isn't "tough" like me. Yeah, stuff went down from the electrical surge but not terribly bad. I got a chunk of cash from my insurance and replaced a few items that I wasn't 100% sure if they'd make in the next month plus. And even a few months later had to add more estimates to my agent for the furnace because the electrician who came out for the emergency call forgot to check it since it was summer. ;) Yeah.

But the week before this I came aware that my Slave Cylinder blew its suction. I ordered a new one and the day before the electrical surge 6/24/16 (pix showing 7/14 but I swear it was in June) I swapped it for a new Aisin one from Rockauto at a earth shattering price of something like $19 while my son napped. Took all of 30 minutes. This was a chore I had done years before as well on my old 60 so it wasn't anything I was new to handle. The rusty truck had a slave and a master cylinder in boxes from that PO with notes... my mechanic friend said "don't use, NFG."
Sorry no pixs of the new one I installed. Like I said, quick chore I just wanted done. I was excited to do so I could take off to PA. Pisser, it didn't happen. Goal: make CMCC summer 2017.

Not mine either. I spent a few hours this Sunday via text with a friend testing one thing then another with my multimeter to rule out a toasted alt. Getting the truck ready for a cs130 swap that I have had hanging around.
 
And so after all this bs excitement with my house I also had chicks hatching (6 in a borrowed incubator that fried, woot!) of which only one actually hatched and the bastard is a Rooster. A beauty but big and possibly seeing his end soon. I had to splint his foot as his toes were curled from not enough moisture while baking... Just another of my many talents.
And a few of my friends Jon @remy1974 and Chip and their kids oogling all the glory-iffic raffle gifts at Rausch Creek. Maaaaan, I so wanted some of that swag. So yeah, guess with all the excitement I was way off on dates.
My kid and I went to got blueberries and then stopped at an old factory that has been dismantled except for its chimney in Glastonbury CT where I grew up.
And then we got some of our own cool swag from some great folks in Cali, Rob @landcrusher909 and Georg @orangefj45 and another friend Bob (flaking on his mud name, sorry no props!). Some of it went off to David @4david for his 60 in NJ.

CMCC is a great event. Do it. I've been going for years. The GCLC crew does a great job.

Even though I won't be on the east coast anymore by then, I will be flying in and attending... It's worth it.
 
Oh hey... so I forgot a really exciting part of the Gear Box rebuild... when I reinstalled it I was unaware of the way the linkage slide into the input shaft (yea look carefully at every bit as you dissemble things)... and the bolt wasn't tight over the splines... more on that later. There is a right way for that bolt to go in.

Steering Linkage to Input Shaft of PSGB: The bolt has to come out entirely and for it to hook back up to the linkage it needs to be out as well. The input shaft has a divot where the shaft of the bolt rests against (area circled in pencil in first pix). And there is only one way the bolt goes in as the threads are tapered. Without the bolt in, you will slide the linkage over the end of the input shaft on the gear box then line up the divot with the holes for the bolt and feed the bolt back in. There is something significant about that side of the linkage; a slight concave shape for the head of the bolt or something. I am only making a point of this because of what you will read next that happened before I knew all these specific details of that area.

Yeah I was one of those really lucky folks that had her linkage let go while driving.
With my kid in the car. Crossing a three way intersection after starting up from a light.
I put my foot on the gas and tweaked the wheel to straighten myself out and heard a clunk and then I had no steering. Talk about horrible feeling. Amazingly no one was coming so I just rolled across the road literally a foot from a sign to my right onto the grass across from me. Photo found of the proximity of the truck and the sign.
And I had left my wrench and sockets at HOME. Thankfully I'm not totally shy and walked across the grass to a design construction business nearby... spotted a Taco loaded with tools parked in front. I inquired inside and the owner was standing at the counter and was able to hand off the tools I needed to secure the linkage.

So prior to the next big rebuild ...
My son and I took a ride through the state forest where I had the serendipitous chance to see a rattlesnake up close. I took this pix of my son in the truck watching it because oddly his Great, great, great grandfather was a catcher of rattlers. I have a copy of the actual news paper clipping dated 1890's or so in one of many thick family genealogy binders an uncle had put together for me. I spotted a huge boulder on the side of the road.... My son wanted to scramble up the rock and I figured 'life is short, let me appease him.." till I spotted the snake laying still near it (the black line at the base of two saplings). I grabbed rocks from the road from the passenger door and hit the snake 5 plus times and it never moved. I thought it might be dead and called a friend chuckling over it. I got out and started for it when suddenly its tongue shot out and I hightailed it back to the truck laughing hysterically. Ass move, yes. Great story, yes. Its all good. Its all about making memories. :)

Carburetor Rebuild: I began the break down of the carb to get it ready for the dip... and promptly did not PB the ICS and it snapped off inside the housing. My friend was coming down to visit that weekend anyway so we were ready to braze a nut to it when he simply tapped an extractor in it and like nothing the broken end unscrewed right out. Metal literally appeared kiln baked (I am well acquainted with clay and paint ect). Guess that's the Cali heat for you.

Carburetor Rebuild cont: Regarding the ACC plunger... If you choose to do a rebuild. Seek out an oem leather plunger instead of the keyster rubber one. Off many experienced folks before me, much to @FJ40Jim, the oil soaked plunger slides better than the rubber one which can stick. I picked up mine immediately upon reading those words from my local dealership. P/N 21353-61020 $35.98 back on 8/12/16.

I'll add a few pixs of my rebuild but whats one from another really? I took @pinhead's advice wholeheartedly and taped parts to cardboard and labeled well.

I found a 26 or 29 gal sized compressor on CL, seller said he'd give it to me for $100. Oddly the guy selling it was rebuilding a 40 for his son to use as a plow on his property. It was a bondo queen. Sad really. s*** was buttered on like makeup on a woman on Broadway. Hilariously the compressor wouldn't run so I ditched the idea...damn thing was huge anyhow. Bigger than I realized. Seller was a funky old wrinkled yankee who was skilled in an airgun and painting. He was restoring a very old tractor which he enjoyed showing off. He checked out my truck and offered to teach me how to paint with his airgun. Offered for me to come back anytime to fix up some funky spots on the truck. Will see...

Then on September 1, 2016 I pulled my carb from my truck which is shown below. I remember so clearly when I told my friend... he responded with "COMMITMENT!" And I went back and forth tons with ryan, @CaptClose on this and again labeled like a crazy woman with painters tape all the ports and lines and what was hooked up where which ultimately was a waste of time since it was so molested in its desmog that there was no going back once I was done with the rebuild. I have a ton of pix... if someone wants to see something specific, just ask.

My son and I did a little coloring from a book my club gave out years ago with the membership... @rain76king. Sure holds true.
