have so much planned for the fall and winter I really hope I can keep up. To start, the double seal output shaft seal, u-joints ( not really needed but it’s going to be apart ) 3.70 front and rear differentials, either new springs, shocks and bushings or just shocks and bushings, 4* caster shims, stitched steering wheel cover, brake conversion, axle seals and pinion seals.

Here’s a good one! I volunteered to help a newer, but known, friend convert his FJ40 to disk brakes. He is 9 years older than I am so he’s 80, not a computer user and not an internet guy. He asks me to acquire all of the parts needed , which I have done….and pays the costs. I just assumed I would probably be doing all of the work since he seems to have little muscle available….not that I am that much better.

I have known a few geezers who routinely run from the cold weather and head for warmer climates for a few months. It takes a little time for everything to arrive and in the interim this man tells me he too is going to Florida for the winter. Mind you it been sunny and 60* here EVERY day but his schedule was prepared months ago.

My extra but limited space has a few boxes of brake parts and associated paraphernalia… I may see him in March or April as the plan goes now. I’m not pissed but I would have felt this could have been part of the discussion 2 months ago.
WARNING ! LONG STORY. So…let me detail a bit about how I wound up with a ton of work to do on the 40…and now, no time in the next few months to do much of it, so far. The 4.11 gears in my 40 are not an issue but it would be nice to cruise the hi ways with less noise, rpm and pushing the engine. If you’re doing the 65mph limits around here, you can be pushed off the road by other enthusiastic drivers passing at 80 to 85. It is the north east corridor and everyone is impatient ( remember that “me first syndrome “ I had mentioned a few months ago)

I had searched for a disc brake conversion for the above mentioned friend and @Yotajeff responded to my request. After a few discussions and emails, PayPal and other things Jeff sent me a few heavy boxes loaded with all of the parts, hubs, calipers, rotors, birds and bearings. He additionally recommended the seals, gaskets and numerous small parts and tie rod adapters to use during this conversions and called me to insure that we were both on the same page. I was able to easily obtain the needed suggested parts from Sonny and FJ-Parts in California along with lightening speed. He is genuinely concerned that this project is as simplied as he could make it. He has also told me to call him or text with any questions or issues that may develop during the conversion… wow, !!!

Anyway, as we know, there are a few MUD members who command a load of respect for their knowledge and dedication to the vehicle. I had asked about swapping my 4-speed for the 5 speed. A reply from @wngrog noted some fairly involved reworking of the tunnel cover for proper fit. He suggested re-gearing to the 3.70 gearing to achieve a similar effect. He has also provided several suggestion for the Holley EFI installation I did a few months back

Looked into buying new ring annd pinion gears ans well ans the process of installing them. Gears were not in stock for 2 sets and cost is up there. I had inquired again to @Yotajeff about looking to change the differentials.

He found a few fronts telling me they are typically less used then the rears as they are always under power. Today, two well packed and stuffed plastic crate boxes arrived UPS. I ALSO NEED new spring bushings shocks and MAYBE all 4 springs (thinking still about Terrain Tamer parabolic). I texted Jeff to let him know that everything had arrived. He calls me back a bit later to advise me of a procedure to not move the spider gears and maintain pinion preload along with several other helpful hints. Earlier he again suggested a list of parts necessary to make this swap un-eventful.

Safe to say the FJ40 will undergo same really good transformations over the winter.

Here’s the crazy part…not that any of this isn’t crazy enough at my age…. I have lived where I am for over 4 decades. I had ALWAYS WANTED A POLE BARN but never had the cash flow to support one. It was always kids needs and family things of any kind that took precedence. I would build a vintage bike and sell it…profits went to wife and kids. Some went to other FJ40’s. A wild cycle of the same events for 20+ years. The pole barn is done almost 2 years now and the old garage became a drop-off site for more junk. Also always want to convert this garage to a large family room.

So now at 72( real soon ). I am beating myself up building: beams, lifting sheets of plywood…flooring joists, sub-floor, top floor, electrical, insulation, cutting in windows, doors, new headers, fireplace, even foundation stuff, mixing concrete, drilling into the old concrete, rebar…filling in the old garage doors gaps. I have used over 5000 nails and 5 butane cartridges to power the nail gun. With the pressure of the approaching holidays and how long I will be here to enjoy many more of these holidays with this new room, I AM trying to get it done before December 20th.

@Yotajeff there has been some change in priorities… you have been a remarkably nice guy and excellent source. It’s all here waiting to get started….thank you once again for all the great parts and conversations. I’ll be in touch and send a few photos as I get things going.

Let me add one more thing: in the few years I have been here at IH8MUD, EVERYONE I have dealt with or carried on conversations has been amazing.
Thanks!!

I drove a couple of cute girls home from the bar who missed the bus. Everyone else was drunk and they live accross town, so it was up to the untested 60.......... It was my landys second voyage that far away from home on the rebuilt engine.... why not?! Heater blew warm and brakes work, but after 10 minttes it was running a little lean.
Pulled over for fun and took the air cleaner off to adjust the mixture screw, partially just to see her reaction. She was cool with it, and luckily ive done it 600 times by now
🤣🤣

I had her set a 5 minute timer, its pitch black out and 30 degrees outside. Were under a streetlamp listening to music. Did it in 4 minutesand 59 sconds..... She thought it was pretty impressive and since she was even ehotter than my engine, I was glad I made the adjustment!😎

Got back in the cruiser and she ran like a champ. Think the girl was impressed!. No kiss goodnight but I didnt hit any humans, elk, deer, ice, and the engine didnt exploded! ill treat it as a victory! Gunna do the lean drop thing tomorrow.......

You will live to 107

Have you run that "head unit" with the built in amp and the external amp to compare? Any other stickers on the separate amplifier that indicate the RMS output power? I love the functionality of my head unit, but a little more juice would be good, if for no other reason that to have a little more headroom before the head unit output starts distorting.

Yes I could get an aftermarket amplifier ... but why not use this small little Toyota unit.

FYI the $10 price I mentioned was at the pick and pull yard. They look at early 2000s stock radios as junk and price them accordingly.
Haven't run a non external amplifier unit in a long time. I've been running a head unit like this and amplifier like this in my FJ62 for years.

It was completely plug and play in my FJ62. Definitely better than a internal amplifier. But even after replacing the stock speakers with ones able to handle higher wattage they still distorted a ways before making out the volume. I believe it's possible to run a internal amplifier with an external amplifier. Problem I see you arre still limited by the distortion in the factory amplifier. With an external amplifier you can take it completely out of the loop. Basically just identifying with all the wires between the head unit and amplifier. The two plug from the factory harness are easy to identify. Plenty of after plugs that level what each wire does. Have other amplifiers from later Toyotas that should be able to used.

Some have outputs for subwoofers.

I haven't been junk yarding for years. When 40 and 60 series could still be found I searched a few times a month. Believe I have a double DIN radio out of a Scion that has an internal amplifier. Could use that to compare be think it amplifier is larger than the single DIN.

@wngrog

107? It may take me that long to get this all finished…..hahaha 😂

Used Evaporust for the first time on the fuel sending unit from my ‘79 fj40. Here are the results and with just a touch of PB blaster the lever is free and loose. Also refinished the access cover. Looked in the tank and it was toast. New replica tank from Cruiser Corp on the way. Also new oem fuel pump and oem sending unit with accessories in transit from City Racer. Both venders had the order shipped out the same day I ordered.

Love that stuff

Going to try to get this unpacked…it the 3.70 differentials that @Yotajeff sent to me. Some disk brake conversion parts and new rotors. Nice way to ship some really heavy oversized UPS boxes

Went for a test run in the ice/snow/mud with the new tires up towards Aldape Summit. Lots of ruts. Was in low range low clawing my way up in places. Forgot to put in the full set of ice breaker chains, so I used a good turn around spot about 3/4 of thee way up to the summit and came back down. Brakes never tried to throw me into the the really nasty borrow pits, yea. I'm thinking I need to do some carb and dizzy work. Need to make the defroster hose elbows and get rear heater motor working. Need new wiper blades. Must install the HAM radio too.

I happen to notice the other day that CityRacer has the elbows and the rear heater motor if yours is done.

I think someone had a print file or maybe it was PVC fittings. I think the actual hose is good its the "rubber end/elbow is dry rotted apart. This will be my 3rd or 4th fix since 1982. I'll look to see what CityRacer has to offer - thanks.
