That is seriously legit.
The FJ40 looks right at home up there!
Thats Awesome i would live to read a whole thread on that trip! hint hint:grinpimp:
You might be my hero

We definitely had a good time. We cruised through some incredible country and met some very generous people along the way. I’ll get around to a more formal write up when I have time.

Just tried to start it. Fired up and ran until it died. Tried again and it was running so rich it couldn't burn all the gas. Removed the air cleaner and the shelf of the Holly 2 bbl behind the venturis was soaked with gas. Turned the key and the gas flowed out of the vent. Removed the bowl and checked the float, looked and acted normal, didn't weigh enough to be full of gas. Reinstalled the bowl and tried again but the engine acted like it was locked. Pulled all the plugs and turned it over and the #5 and #6 cylinders were full of raw gas. Tried to start again but the gas was running out of the vent.

What could have happened to the carb so suddenly?

Sounds like your needle valve did not close. the float may have dropped to the bottom and needle valve came down to far and stuck and just pumped fuel straight into the venturis. Bend the tab on the float (that the needle sets on) up a tad bit. then readjust the float level.

Drove it. Put 3K miles on it over several days. Went from Olympia, WA through British Columbia, cut across the Yukon Territory, crossed into Alaska, headed for Eagle River, AK and then on down to the Kenai Peninsula. Changed the spark plugs, fuel pump and fixed the parking brake along the way.

That was an awesome trip. I can't wait to do it again sometime in my minivan (80 series) with AC and reclining seats. I'll enjoy the next few months with your 40.

Great looking rig, pics and adventure! More pics please. Is that a full size Con Fer rack? I need to clean mine up, load her up and roll as well!

X2. Same for tonight, tomorrow, Thurs, and Fri. HOWEVER, on Sat, I'm going to hook up to my M105A2 and take a load of garbage to the dump. At least it'll get driven that way.

I can't wait to finish my shop up so I can go snow-wheeling!!!!
Trolling old friends.....

As far as I know the rack is full size. It measures 58”x68”. It’s huge, but nice to have.
I’m waiting on more pictures from my brother. Then I’ll post a thread about our trip.

I think I speak for all of us when I say a write up of the trip would be great!

Awesome!
More info. on your rig when you get a chance please: year, mods, etc.

Finally got some new plates so I got her out for a drive and then adjusted the valves. Next up this weekend is diff fluid and she should be ready to dink around in for the summer. On another note, any ideas if there is a market for a 40 plow setup? I removed the plow and the framework from underneath and will take the front off tonight. It works great but I have no need for it and use a 3 wheeler to do my sidewalk and drive.

I was in need of some new hiking gear so I drove the 40 to Summit Hut. The store offers legit outdoor gear so not your average sporting good outlet.

The store was created in 1969 and ironically sitting on the floor on full display is the owners 69 fj40. I parked close to the front doors, got a couple of compliments but no discount hahahah.

Continued cleaning and prepping the drum parking brake split transfer case to go behind the H41 for my '71 FJ40 build. Today I tackled the transfer case vent. Thought I'd try pulling the pressed in stock vent so I looked at assembling a temporary tool. I pried off the sheet metal vent cap and noticed the hole looked like it could be easily tapped for a 6mm bolt, a few minutes later and it was done. I picked through my stash of non-Toyota metric bolts and found a longer one that I could thread all of the way through. I then picked through the assorted spacers and plate washers and found a spacer and washer that would give me a large surface area to pry against. Threaded everything together and used a flat pry bar to pop it out. A trip to the local hardware store for an elbow, and finally found something that would work. The PEX elbow has barb-type ribs on it, but I had to file down the OD of the outermost rib (inside the case) to get it to just press through the smaller ID inside the case. I smeared on a little Three Bond gasket maker around the perimeter at the outside of the case before pushing it in. I may have to go back and figure out how to make it fit a little more snug, maybe a small O-ring. The hardware store also had a thin wall brass tube the the same OD as the stock vent (15/32") and about the same ID as the ribs on the elbow, should make a nice, snug fit.

Now I just have to find the proper diameter hose and it'll be ready for when I get to installing the drivetrain later this year (I hope).

UPDATE

I decided to cut a short length of K&S 15/64" brass tube (Part #8138), which is pretty much the same OD as the stock vent, and I ground off the ribs on one side of the elbow to get a press fit into the brass tube. When I install it I might add a dab of thread locker blue to the OD of the brass tube before pressing it into the case.

Serviced the parking brake that hasn’t worked for years. Now works fine. Note: I rotated the adjustment mechanism 180 degrees before closing up. Shoes would not center properly as pictured. Also replaced the seal in the transfer case while is was in there.

I have all the bits from @cruiseroutfit to do this on the bench, will happen before driveshafts go back in. Any tricks?

Is that place in Tucson? Neat.

Pretty straight forward; having worked on drum wheel brakes in the past. I did check my manual ahead of time to read the suggested order of steps to disassemble. The hardest part was getting the seal seated in the transfer case. My plan was to use a deep socket that matches the diameter of the seal and tap it in, but the shaft coming out of the transfer case is too long and the socket idea was a no-go. Ended up tapping it in with a hammer and a fat socket extension, slowly working my way around.

Why this little sumthin chose today to present itself to me... it’s never really bothered me before! PO had stuck some stair tread tape to the side steps..... today I happen to see where it had come loose.... exposing some rust. I should’ve gone in the house and took a nap so maybe this bright idea would go away....... didn’t

3 broken bolts later (one being attachment to frame support that I had to completely drill out) and a pound of dirt that fell out, I still have to clean up the rust and tap new threads......
Maybe start a new thread......
