Couldn't agree more with this...
I have to admit that I also own a '64 CJ6 that I painted dune beige over the original green/rust to make her match the rest of the herd. So I keep telling myself that it's the herding car from John Wayne's movie Hatari!. It even has the front seat to catch game...
My friend bought this CJ6 a few years ago. Absolutely rust free, rebuilt Hurricane engine. Had a bad throw out bearing so we pulled trans and transfer case, replaced seals, clutch ,etc. I finally shamed him into buying steel wheels to replace those ghetto alloys. My '40 in the pic to keep this legit.:grinpimp:

I really like the low profile roof rack on your 40, is that a custom deal?

The jeep is OK I guess :meh: :flipoff2:

Thanks John. The rack was originally a Con-Fere "port hole" rack . My truck wouldn't fit in my garage so I took a saws all and cut all of the "up rights" out and then welded in 2" scrap from an old wrought iron gate, then mated the top to the bottom , if that makes sence, ya, I'm a red neck, I can now pull the rig in the garage and the rack is fully functional.

I built a similar rack out of 3/4” box steel. I spaced the two rectangles apart from each other with some 2x4 (1 5/8”). For strength I drilled holes for the vertical spacers made of 1/2” rod to go into and then welded them into the holes. At the time I only had oxyacetylene torches. I also brazed expanded sheet metal over the bottom layer.

Originally I had it mounted to the four bolts across the top of the windshield using 1/4”x3” length of aluminum. It then extended back to the location of the original roll bar. While driving I try to limit the weight on it, but it doesn’t flex a noticeable amount with 5-600 lbs on it.

20 years later, the simple design is going strong. It’s total height is about 3”.

More recently I’ve mounted it on Thule towers and cross bars. The standard towers have the rack just barely touching the fibreglass roof, so the installed rack only increases the trucks height 3”

Vise grips! ;)
Recently attempted to fix a rattle in back of my ‘78. Loose brackets on the little vent windows on both sides! And here I was searching all over for new hinges....

Thanks guys !!!
Thought you'd like to see the rear side panels as well ... the panels match the seats going in

Looks good... but I’d not recommend carpet in the rust belt. My ‘74 floor was completely rotted out before I bought it in 1991 and the carpeted interior likely had a lot to do with it. To be certain of the tubs death, a PO also coated the rust in fibreglass to ensure maximum decay potential.

I think he's ok. That looks like an Aqualu aluminum tub.

Bought a variety of hose clamps from SOR (which are close to OEM but are not of course) as well as some OEM clamps. I then gave them a nice bath in Muriatic acid overnight— this got rid of the zinc platting. I then rinsed them and put them in a bath of Hydrogen Peroxide with Morton’s salt. This rusted the parts. I then sprayed my favorite rust converter (Black Star) to stop the rust and which turns them a blackish type color. Now they look period correct for my rig.

Thats a great Period Correct Patina Technique

Hood and fenders shown in an earlier post while in the booth are home now. Put a few bits on the hood. Repairs to tub are almost done. Painting should happen next week. Might not be ready to come home that week, but probably the next.

Yup, no argument with that on my part. Looks like mine will be a bit shorter with smaller tires than yours. You also have more NOS parts than I do, much of mine is refreshed original. But it would be fun to get some pictures of them together.
