Nice job…

When valve cover bolts loosen with time and lack of maintenance, reduced tension on the valve cover can allow engine oil to weep past the spark plug tubes seals. It will show up as gummy buildup on the spark plugs.

You’ll notice it on the middle cylinders first, 3,4,5 and 6 are the furthest away from any valve cover bolts.

Suggest you re-torque all valve cover bolts…Keep those bolts properly torqued... usually fixes the issue without needing spark plug tube seals/valve cover gasket replacement.
That makes a lot of sense, thanks for the details! I snugged the valve cover bolts up by hand and noticed they were pretty loose. When I pull the airbox next time I’ll do a little more thorough job of torquing to spec.

Noticed the coolant reservoir was empty, lo and behold my radiator was ready to give up the ghost. In parallel discovered the recent clunking in the suspension. $600 later and she has a new radiator, hoses, and sway bar endlinks.

Original radiator made it to 241,000miles!

PS Serra Toyota of Decatur did another fantastic packing job on the radiator. 2/2 I’ve received radiators in excellent condition.

Was the front of the radiator clogged with debris at all?

Glad to see it’s still in your hands and happy!
Yup it hasn't needed much, apart from some stuff the first year like coilpacks, and a master its been happy.

Plenty of rubber has slowly been getting replaced, this year its either going to be pull the trigger and start lining up suspension parts or swap her 4th gen 4R with a 5th. Her 4R is not as happy as the cruiser, even 5 years newer the suspension is much worse overall condition. LC's are built different that's 100%.

The front did have a lot of debris, hair, etc on it. I’d say 20%-ish blockage.

Same place with our 5th Gen 4R. You can tell I spend more time on my Cruiser than her. But with the current Toyota sale, Greta is getting some new outer TRE and front sway bar links.

I actually did, but she loves her 4R Limited. We have it lifted with a “custom” half Zone Offroad and half FOX 1.5-2” lift. She wanted a TRD but loved the Limited… so now I’m making her a TRL 🤷🏼‍♂️ sourcing the TRD front and rear bumper skins, roof rack, and steps 😂

Limited has the full time 4wd torsion center diff, it is superior to other 4Runner trims.

Indeed, part of what convinced her, and me really. Honesty the best 4R though is the 4th Gen Limited, basically a GX, but slightly smaller body.

Yeah I was lookin for the limited strictly because of the full time 4 wheel but a local mudder has a clean SR5 for sale.

So uh, not a 100 series, but for $1800 couldn't pass up this non-running 2UZ 2003 4Runner:

But wait a minute... Let's look closer here:

Previous owner had it for 8 years, and one morning in winter started it up to warm up, went inside, came back out and it had shut off and wouldn't restart. He replaced plugs/coiks/crank sensor/MAF sensor but no joy. He apparently got frustrated and it's been sitting since.

I saw him make an offhand comment about being willing to sell it on a Facebook group that I'm not even a part of, but that FB decided include in my feed. I saw that he was two hours away from me and jumped on it.

It has 5100s + dobinson coils, SPC upper control arms, sliders/roofrack/front bumper, ARB high-output single compressor, and of course the TRD supercharger. Frame is actually in good shape (some minor surface rust, but not bad at all), and only one dent in the body.

From the way he described the failure, I sorta wonder if it jumped timing by ingesting a critter looking for warmth into the timing belt path through the little trapdoor behind the fan pulley bracket. That's purely wild speculation & I haven't even checked if that trapdoor is missing yet - guess I'll find out at some point. Regardless, pulled the accessory belt off and the supercharger feels good, so that's mostly what I care about hahaha.

Will my LX end up as a SuperCruiser? Or will I leave this 4Runner as a 4Rocket? Tough choice... oh, what a terrible burden to be saddled with. 🤣

Solid find!

Oil change, fresh air filter, rotated the tires. Yearly wash and wax, shin etsu grease on the moldings, and light interior detail to get rid of some sand and dog hair.

Went in for a different type of slick top:

Working on some additional sound deadener while everything is ripped apart and starting to figure out the interior build. Maybe I'll actually start a build thread after 8 years 🤔
