Loaded up the bikes, the wife, and a friend to go camping the night before a 6hr mtn bike race.

used to run 195deg. with engine heat soaked on hyw 3+hrs- would climb to 225deg. before pulling over on long climbs. off-idle around town after heat soaking engine would be 195-205 deg.

now: 180-185on hyw. and climbs to 210 on long hills. can feel more oomph around town and startup. off idle around town after heat soak in 95deg. weather 183-187.

No other changes except deleting both cats and using two straight 2.25" i.d. pipe to keep exhaust velocity a foot past the o2 sensors.

noticeable added growl/6cyl spit even thru stock muffler.

i should get a chance to cut cats open this weekend.

my guesstimate on hp/tq change would be about 1/4 of the added power as when my other 80 lost 1000lbs of 5000. So roughly 15-20hp.

But given the heat loss id guess the cats were somewhat clogged/congested vs stock cats which would only account for about a 7-10hp difference........cats vs no cats.

The main thing im curious to find out is if the slightly congested cats were causing the o2 sensors to change a/f ratios slightly richer losing mpg.

Picked it up at the Zollamt (customs house) in Regensburg. The Polish delivery guys looked sheepish about something, so I looked it over closely. The hood release was a little jacked up, but 5 minutes with a screwdriver fixed it. When I stopped for fuel, I noticed that they had broken the gas cap completely off. Since it was shipped with an empty tank, I have no clue how/why they did that. The 25 mile drive back to my apartment was nothing but a delight, even though I was heavily laden with the rest of my household goods. I'd been driving a Jeep Liberty until now and it felt "tippy" at 40 mph in the mountains, and rode horribly. Marjan just ate up the mountain trails I took on the way back home. I could tell he was loaded down on steep grades, but otherwise felt confident. Even the tiny village streets were no bother, as I could tell where my corners were better than in the Liberty.

leaving it in 5th gear the whole time.

Don't tow in 5th...It's an unwritten rule over here in cruisers, and most other things, such as Nissan Patrols. Actually, the owner's manual on my HDJ80 warns against it too.

How the heck do they BREAK a gas cap? Throw it on the ground and STOMP on it? :bang:

After serving as a fine parts tray for close to a year, I finally installed this:

thats a crazy long hike down to nortfork, even longer on the way up!!
fishings good I here...;)
8 miles or something... There's shorter ways down but I wanted to spare my knees. Pretty nice trail I have to say. Should of spent two mights though.

Damn with a rear hatch that looks like that. I might suggest some backing up lessons before you start driving those mighty fine looking '85's!!
