What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? (32 Viewers)

Not having the gasket between the two consoles would drive me crazy. Not sure if you can buy it though.

I went and checked and my 94 never had one. It must be one of the parts they added as they moved away from being a hard core offroad vehicle, towards being overly-complicated and frilly.

Well, all buttoned back up and installed but the engine whine is still there. The power steering pump gear looked a little nicked in a couple of places but I know that almost always causes a "tick" and not a "whine." I'm going to remove the pump from the block and run the engine a bit. If it disappears, I'll order up a new pump gear. If it doesn't, I'll likely start a separate post about the whine. Truck runs and shifts great like any 80 I've ever driven. Just a little whiny! I'm not sure what else could be causing it. As stated previously, whine is still there with the belts removed so I figured it was power steering related since the PS pump runs off the crank and the flow in my reservoir was not correct (truck steered well though). Taking the belts off eliminates AC compressor, water pump, idler pulley and alternator. I was really hoping it was one of those.

Next step complete! I pulled the pump tonight, sliding it back off the two studs and securing it with zip ties away from everything else and started the engine. THE WHINE IS GONE. Below is a picture of the "intermediate" gear that operates off the crank and powers the power steering (PS) pump. It does have some marring (you cannot see it in this photo), but the noise has completely disappeared, so I'm hopeful that a new PS pump gear will remain silent for a while at least.

If the intermediate gear isn't whining against the crank gear, my hope is that it won't whine against a new PS pump gear either (indicating the PS pump gear is the issue). I've never come across other posts mentioning a whine from a nicked power steering pump gear—just the annoying tick that everyone mentions. Not sure what to make of that. Maybe mine is more grooved than nicked. I don't have the tick, just the whine. Whether that means the intermediate gear is severely damaged in there, only time will tell.

It will take a while to get a new gear from Partsouq, but I'll report back once it's in. Fingers crossed!

Hey Fellas

Been working on a simple drawer/ sleep platform setup for the 80. Nothing fancy, trying to keep it light until I switch out rear springs for heavies.

If you saw my previous post maybe 2 weeks ago I run a 4x4 club here in Honduras that uses off-roading to support kids that in many cases can’t go to school due to the difficulty of getting school supplies.

This weekend we start the first of 4 weekend trips to 20 villages. We have to take a 6 hour detour because the bridge is out. Regardless we are pretty excited to get up there, spin some mud and partner with the kids.

Our club got together and packed 1500 backpacks this past weekend.

There are some good ones that clip to the steering wheel that also do voice command and track skipping. Turns your steering wheel into a modern one! that sounds

that sounds awesome but I can’t find one. Can you tell me the name of it or link it? Ty!

Closed out bird season with a 500 mile round trip and some desert exploration. As always, no issues.
