I usually have pretty crappy luck and timing. Not this weekend though. I've been having issues with my rear locker working intermittantly. All the electronic circuits checked out, I pulled the motor to rebuild and regrease and it looked great. Finally, I pulled the axles to see if the splines were twisted.
Sure enough. Good thing I caught this before it sheered on the trail.

Fortunately, last Friday, RCV anounced black friday discounts. These axles rarely go on sale, so to pick up a set on discount the day I discovered my twisted splines was perfect timing.

Grabbed a Christmas tree with the family after early morning bulldog canyon run and church. It was a good day.

My OEM fan tickled my radiator (again) after hitting 5000rpm on the way to work. I spent almost three hours limping it home. I found out the hard way when driving 80 mph and I look down to see the temp gauge at 283* :(

The engine runs "fine", but there may be more heat related damage that I'm not aware of.

I've already purchased a new Denso rad and a new OEM fan but I need a better solution. I have approximately 4mm between the supercharger belt and the fan so using smaller spacers is not an option. I've read that the ring fan is horrible.

I replaced the fan, radiator, and fan shroud last week. After hitting 283*, I was extremely nervous about starting the Cruiser. I had my wife checking the tailpipe and my son checking under the hood while I turned the key. The engine roared to life and settled down into its familiar hum. I waited what felt like ages listening for someone to scream "Turn it off!" but all I saw was cautiously optimistic faces.

I let it run for about 2 minutes before shutting it down. I topped off the rad and reservoir tank and sucked out as many bubbles as I could. I had my son start the Cruiser next while I monitored the engine. I needed to bring the engine up to temp and have the thermostat open. After a few minutes, scangauge reported 177* and I saw red coolant mix in the radiator fill funnel. I patiently waited but nothing seemed abnormal; I was lucky.

I fully expected a blown headgasket or cracked head and I might have shortened the life on my headgasket however everything seemed to be running normal as if nothing happened. I wasn't completely scott-free; my coolant bypass pipe started leaking. After some heat in the engine the leak stopped. I've ordered o-rings and a bypass pipe but I'm hoping this is not a crack in the timing cover.

Another win was that I found the culprit for both radiator cuts, the original fan shroud. Toyota redesigned the shroud at some point to prevent the fan from catching the lip and going into the radiator.

Lower left side of the shroud.
Original on the top, new on the bottom.
When the fan blades bend due to high RPM, the tips of the fan would catch on the curved area and slide the fan blades into the radiator.

This post may not be "legal" since I don't have my 80 in the pics but I spent the day Saturday with 3 of my brothers in law and some of our boys hunting pheasants in northern Utah. We had an 80 a 200 and a Tundra there (for Toyota content). Made for a great Sunday dinner yesterday!

If my rig hit temps that high I would definitely be running a combustion gas test before I did anything else.

How many miles have you driven w/turbo so far?
Which motor? :worms:

On the original about 35k. Valves were set by my machine shop out of spec and I roasted them by trusting and not checking their work.

Built a new motor and now has about 9k on it. Runs well now. Dont think I could go back from having a turbo on this truck.
