I'm betting the truck is light enough that it wouldn't matter.

Speaking of engine swaps, why not put an Audi 4.2L twin turbo into these beasts?

Yuck. Why ruin excellent engineering with something German?

Because 750 hp, and it would still get better gas mileage

So do it then! If HP is your thing, run with it!

I’ll take bombproof engineering over Gerryrigged any day of the week!

You got a good point there.

Germans can engineer horsepower, not reliability.

Correct. My S55 and M5 were incredible machines, as far as handling and go fast. Both had multiple warranty issues. Total combined miles between the two? 3700. Both were purchased new.

Add to that the diesel Beetle that my daughter had.

Never again.

Well that's an oxy-moron if I've ever heard one.

I'm assuming you missed a couple zeroes? You're comparing completely different vehicles with completely different purposes.

Reliability is reliability - regardless of what you're doing with a vehicle... What do you mean completely different vehicles? The S55 vs. the M5? Or German vehicles vs. a Land Cruiser?

I was comparing German sports saloons vs. a Land Cruiser. It's akin to a hybrid driver aghast that anyone would drive a vehicle (Land Cruiser) that doesn't get 45+ MPG. It's not the point.

Yeah, the complexity required to yield that amount of performance comes with downsides, just as the off-road capability of a Land Cruiser has downsides.

Which is precisely why putting a “go fast motor” in a 6,000 lb “go anywhere and get back safely and reliably” vehicle makes absolutely no sense.

I put approx 1600 miles on the S55. It was in for warranty work 5 Times. I put more miles on the loaner vehicles I had than the S55.

The M5 was less crappy. Only had it in 3 Times in 6 months.

My 1992 FJ80 has never failed me. 26 years and 255k. In much harsher conditions than the S55 and M5 ever saw.

To each their own. I personally do not see the point in making an incredibly reliable vehicle incredibly less reliable for the sake of more HP. Not to mention all of the pitfalls associated with intertwining two different platforms.

Couldn't agree more. It wouldn't be in my top 10 list for engine swaps into a 'Cruiser. But to say anything German is inherently poor engineering is a little silly.

I would consider it poor engineering if it isn’t reliable...

Never once claimed it was... From the beginning my point was that you can't throw the baby out with the bathwater and say everything Germany ever produced is unreliable because your two were.

Should someone never buy a Toyota or ANY Japanese car before because their Yaris broke down?

That would be stupid because everyone knows that Japanese vehicles are better. Duh. :flipoff2:

The more impressive number would be how much money you lost when you traded your AMG and M in.

I painted my 97 with Monstaliner. Okay, it was a couple of weeks ago, but here you go.

Overall I really like it. I painted the rooftop box as well. It is some hella tough paint too.
