I was just going to ask everyone if I NEED chains for our upcoming trip through Colorado, Utah, Wyoming, Montana, Nevada, California.

I suppose it makes sense...

I was just looking at the Owner's Manual the other day and it states "Do not use tire chains on the front tires." What do you guys think/do?

Already got an ARB lined up with a gentleman out of OR that it looks like will be swapping me! Plus Erics bumper is weak! haha Now I just need to find a front OEM lower light clip and mod the ARB to clear an 8274...

How did I miss this? I covet your front Labs bumper. We could have traded at TnS.

I would stick with what the owners manual says I usually just run them in the back on our 60 when we need them and they do just fine.

Well shoot @ToyotaDon! Wish I had known you wanted it and I would have swapped you on the dunes! If I see one Ill let you know in the future. I didn't realize they were such a popular item for people. @kombi and I just made plans for the 9th/10th to swap bumpers in the snow in Dunsmuir. Sounds like Kombi is getting one hell of a deal ;) Ill let you 2 fight it out amongst yourselves if you really want it Don, but at this point it is spoken for unfortunately.

Where @LS1FJ40 are you coming into California ? maybe some of us NorCal folks could meet up with you folks ! Oh and you can bring chains , but if it's a bunch of 80's caravan - ing ... then you'll pull each other out if you get stuck I'd think , ya know a LIL "Code of the forest" !!!

We are definitely going to be in NorCal. Fishing Clear Lake the end of December (29,30,31?)

We don't have a plan of what all we are going to do. Just go where the road takes us. We are up for just about anything. It would be great to meet up with some Mudders throughout the trip.

We are planning to stop in SLC and see @cruiserdan at the Land Cruiser Museum at some point!

We want to see cool things and fish. Those are the requirements of our trip!

Clearlake ... sucks , fyi ... I know It's known , but not far from Clearlake is lake berryessa and you'll have a much easier time catching at Lake berryessa than Un-Clearlake>
In Fact at the south end of Clearlake, there is a rd called Knoxville rd that leads right to the north end of Lake Berryessa.... along knoxville rd is Knoxville OHV park has some good trails, then continue south to Lake Berryessa... it's about 15 miles south of clearlake .... Oh and trust me on this ... I've been to both lakes and Berryessa blows doors on clearlake, I've fished berryessa for near 30 yrs ... fyi

Ofcourse if I was coming all this way , I'd fish the rivers and the coast, and leave the lakes alone... just know the mountain rivers and streams are closed in the winter and fish and game take it serious... "If you think it may be against the law in California ... it is"

We are planning to fish at least 15 out of 17 days. We have one day planned at Clear Lake with Matt Allen (professional angler that my son knows through fishing forums).

We are rainbow fishing in Utah at Flaming Gorge. Thinking about going up northern Wyoming and ice fishing near Jackson Hole. Thinking about hitting steelheads in Oregon.

Just need invites!!

midfat, if it's not inconvenient, would you be able to do me a favour and measure your roof height and the highest point? don't worry about your roof rack, just the roof itself.

car is looking good mate cheers.

@LS1FJ40

If I were you though , I'd blow off Clearlake and lake berryessa all together and go North to the Lost Coast - the most remote stretch of Beach on the west coast . Go up USAL Rd through the forest about 5 miles down to a very secluded beach to camp , then on further up to shelter cove ... this trail is mellow the first 6 miles then is hairy the rest .... especially if wet ... but here is a link to the Lost Coast and a few pics of when I was there...

Hit Usal Rd off Hwy 1 north of Westport almost exactly 5 miles to sharp left on USAL rd. then drive through the forest 5 miles to the beach , etc. then on up to Sheltercove, etc.

Driving through the forest on USAL rd

Come out of the forest along the coast at about 1500 ft up !

Don't drive offroad here ... ha

drive to the bottom and cross the bridge and go left to the beach to camp ( good spots ) , then next day on north back up USAL Rd where its gets really rutty on up to Shelter cove ... but it you want remote ... this is it !!!

coming down the mountain

Cross the bridge and an Immediate left to the beach camp etc.

Hope you pick this way to go ... you won't be disappointed !!!!!

@junior80 Happy to measure later this afternoon. You want metric or imperial?

either is fine, I can convert it if you have an imperial tape measure. Thanks for that bud

Did he actually remove the puddles of diesel in each can or just put some Saran Wrap in it to keep from leaking? Haha

The latter...

Not this weekend but messing with my New to me LX450 today and it has a cheap alarm/autostart that is causing parasitic drain, battery was dead as a doornail so I jumped it with my 4Runner it barely turned over so I let it sit and charge for a bit, it was still slow to turn over so i tried it again and cranked a bit and then boom everything was dead, no lights no key buzzer, nothing...i'm guessing it popped the fusible link, so I ordered 2 from South Atlantic Toyota(mud vendor) and they will be here faster and cheaper than I could have gotten one from the local stealership, which brings me to my question ,Why would jump starting it pop the fusible link...any help greatly appreciated, I searched and found a couple links but nothing specific to my issue...this forum is an incredible resource.....

I've NEEDED chains 3 times in the last 5 years. However, on remote backroads outside of cell coverage I was damn glad I had them. If you find yourself near Great Falls, MT look me up. I'll take you guys out fishing on the Missouri.
Cheers,
Scot
