Cheer,

Overland Expo East 2016! Spent a day prior exploring some woodsy trails, then on the Biltmore Estate enjoying the expo activities and oogling the amazing rigs that showed up from all over the planet. Great learnings from the Camel Trophy team too!

Camel Trophy Teams have impressive skills but if they used Land Cruiser they would of just drove through the ditch.:hillbilly:

I drove with the :princess: and offspring to San Jose a d met up with @nukegoat and bought his stock spare axles. I rounded up the rest of the stuff, gear oil, silicon gasket maker, and a small can of berryman I have all the hardware soaking in for the last couple days. Tomorrow I have to get cracking on it going back together as I have until Thursday to get it done, otherwise it'll be torn apart for weeks in the driveway as I have a surgery on Friday. Gotta clean out the metal dust from the inside of the housing, clean some edges, weld the diff housing back together, then I can start reassembly.

"Bridges? We don't need no stinking bridges."

On the tech-front, adjusted my parking brake this weekend. Forgot how much of a PITA that job is to do. Chased a few more minor leaks after the diesel transplant. Getting most of the niggly little items sorted.

Replaced all the bushings at 260k miles, sleeved both rear LCA & UCA. Extended the LCA by 3/8". Overall, what a job and a workout.

I signed up for the Camel Trophy challenge this year, we had to remove a transmission from an island surrounded by alligators, raging rivers, and angry natives. We had to create rope from our chest and pubic hair first, then cut down trees to make a tripod, forge some shackles in the fire by mining ore, and then while breeding new mules from horses and donkeys... well, you get the picture. It was a pretty cool exercise and those guys have an amazing sense of humor.

I volunteered to drive my 80 through a few "examples" courses (I had signed up for), and I am glad to report that the "getting stuck scenarios" didn't work on the 80. So they used the display rovers to show wheel spin and cross axle issues. One of the instructors told his personal truck was 1997 80, and they always drove land cruisers for their guided tours to North Africa or Costa Rica. The company manning the area was from 7P International, their magazine advertisement for the Oman trip shows all Troopys driving along.

I was recently reading about White Mountain and how dangerous it can be. Highest recorded wind speed outside of a tropical cyclone. 231mph!
The book Not Without Peril details everyone who has perished on Mount Washington. It was a good cautionary tale to read before going there!

You know the wind is serious when you have to chain the buildings to the ground.

A favorite memory of Mt. Washington is when a friend and I topped out after a great day of spring ice climbing in Tuckerman's Ravine. Well, we poke our heads over the top and start walking towards the observatory when a woman in her Subaru says, "Hey, just so you guys know you could have driven up the road." My partner decided to chat her up and explain, I just kept walking while shaking my head.

Some people will never get it.
