What Did You Do with Your 80 This Weekend? (48 Viewers)

I spent Friday and Saturday finishing up building a baseball field. This has been a two week process. She isn't perfect yet but she's playable. Still need to finish the pitcher's mound with clay. The 80 hauled rakes, shovels, and fuel.

I finally found a vehicle that uses more fuel than an 80. A skid loader!

Bought my truck two weeks ago locally. 1996 LC factory locked and only 150k on the clock. Body is pretty shape except a few rust spots and the bad bedliner job over the front and rear bumper, fender flares, and running boards. Interior is what I expected maybe a touch better. Needs new seat covers and steering wheel but really that's about all. Under carriage is near perfect and this thing has never been off-road with only two previous owners (the previous one only did 40k miles over the 9 year ownership). Some oil leaking and an excessive egr issue but nothing else mechanically. Previous owner spent some money on maintenance here and there including a brand new Toyota radiator, shocks all around, plugs and wires, and other misc. things.

This weekend I accomplished:

- power wash engine, engine bay, and under carriage to start clean and fresh (surprising water tight with only some sputtering afterwards no misfires)
- oil change w/ Penzoil Platinum full synthetic (it's been on full synthetic for years now)
- transmission drain and refill (first the truck has ever had in its life)
- completely drain coolant and refill (change green crap for Toyota red)
- change most upper seals and gaskets (valve cover, distributor inner and outer, chain tensioner, half moons, throttle body, probably some others)
- changed all belts
- cleaner throttle body
- cleaned egr (seemed to be stuck open partially)
- replaced cracked vacuum lines under upper intake plenum
- rerouted vacuum lines from previous job(s)
- replaced old hardened exhaust donuts (had slight leak)

After all that the check engine light is gone and it receives an excellent bill of health from a Toyota master technician of 27 years, whom I couldn't have done this all without in just one day.

Next up for major maintenence will be axle and diff services, which I'm not looking forward to.

PS pic of outside was before a wash but after window tint (5% rears, 35% driver/passenger, 50% windshield)

green vacuum lines! how pur eetee!..where did you source the colored lines?

Drove 1100 kms to pick up some stuff incl doors, fender, and misc. Seventeen hr round trip and 14 hrs of driving. :steer:

Replaced all tie rods and ends, rebuilt steering gear, whiteline poly sway bushings, quick disconnects front and rear. Truck handles like brand new! No corvette, but nice difference. Also started to rust bullet the undercarriage. Too many drives on the beach and in the salted snow is taking its toll. Cleaning up the underside is no easy task either, thought I could do it in a weekend or two, no way. More like several weekends throughout the summer.

How about now?

Finished installing a Warn Zeon winch on a non-winch ARB bumper. Almost everything works.... :bang:

I had to modify the Man-A-Fre hitch receiver so it would fit flush against the Iron Pig bumper. Prior owner liked the "miscellaneous washers" look.

Also installed a new turn signal/wiper/cruise control module to fix the funky "early cancel" behavior in right turns. This may be a bad vehicle for someone with OCD.

I did whiteline swaybar bushing this weekend too! The rear endlinks were completely shot-- all metal parts had fused into one part, rubber had shrunken so much there was almost an inch of play before the swaybar "caught" on anything and started working. That plus new fox shocks in the rear and the truck his handling much tighter now! Still rides like crap due to the unloaded 863's.

You know it's bad when you need a sawzall and pneumatic hammer to remove sway bar endlinks

Just ground, primed and painted my back bumper.
Pretty thrilling, huh?

- completely drain coolant and refill (change green crap for Toyota red)

The parts guy at my local Toyota dealership told me you need to completely flush all of the green coolant out before switching to Toyota red or they will gel up when mixed. After some internet research it's still not completely clear but doesn't sound like a good idea. Hope you got it all out!

Went exploring with a couple buddies, the old lady, and my collie. Luckily one of my friends is pretty good with a camera.

I really love my 80 series :)

Also met up with Yohavos to check out his ute. I need one now...

Did the new turn signal stalk solve your early cancel issue? I'm having the same issue. Annoying AF!

Worked like a charm. Thanks for the part @beno !

I'm here to report that the new Slinky coils and Stage 1 Icon 2.0s are in fact the proverbial "bees knees". Ok, maybe the 2.5 CDC Icons with the Slinkys are the "bees knees", but the 2.0's are pretty bitchin too. :)
You got them? Or were you at Cruise Moab?
