Does it bother your eyes when driving at night? Just curious.

I don’t think it will, only because any time I drive a modern car, I have the illumination at it’s highest setting, including the daytime setting in whatever screen is in the car.

It was really dim before with only 2 working bulbs and that really made me strain my eyes to the point I would only glance at the oil pressure, voltage, and water temperature once in a while.

Of course I really never worry about speeding and I am usually aware of how much fuel I have just habit from my motorcycle days!

Now it is time to address the climate controls and adding a small LED for ambient lighting so I can see my cupholders etc. down by the shifters.

You mean it's not supposed to be pitch black inside my troopy while driving at night?!

I did some work on the HZJ77 cluster tonight. I put in the oem mph dial that I got from @Zee to do test fit and try out some gearing later down the road. The middle part (the mph dial) is metal while everything else is backlit plastic. I knew that it would be dark in the middle and the lighting was pretty poor actually overall.

I discovered something that some of you may or may not know already. I can't believe I didn't see this before after taking apart many clusters. The factory clusters that have metal dials are using white backed color middle plastic trim. The clusters that use backlit dials use black backed color middle plastic trim. My cluster was previously using the black backed color version when the overall lighting was poor. (I took the white one and repainted it with some white paint quickly to make it bright white again since it had yellowed.) In the past I always thought it was the cluster housing that had some difference between the backlit dials and the metal dials but the bulbs are in the same places either way. It seems to be this middle plastic trim where the difference is.

After the paint dried up. I put in the white backed middle trim. It really looked a lot better all the way across. New oem bulbs doesn't hurt either. Now I just need to get the speedometer calibrated and the odometer mileage corrected. I left the needle off on purpose for now.

I drove down to San Felipe to see the Baja 1000. Shockingly we got poured on. Anyway, I finally got the pressure washer out and cleaned all the Baja off. Tomorrow I'll do my semiannual fluid film treatment. Ih8rust.

Last time I came back across the border into California, customs turned me around because my vehicle was too dirty! Had already waited 4 hours in line (was during govt shutdown so short staffed), had to go into town and find a carwash then sit in line for another 4 hours. Never heard of that before. First and last time I cross back over via Tijuana.

Edit: Looks like it is 84999-70011.

Thanks again!

Finally found some on Amayama’s website, ordered 6, more than I need but I wanted to justify the shipping charge so if anyone is looking I may have a couple spares.

This is standard practice. Invasive plant species ruin natural landscapes.

Cleaning requirements for military gear into Australia from the US is insane. Must be white glove clean.

The irony of what can come across and what can't these days.

There is nothing wrong with having spares for what they cost and the hassle of getting them. Actually surprised it isn't a T10 type bulb like what is used in the inclinometer and main cluster.

Dirt? Get out of town!

It is kind of ridiculous since they only care about visible dirt. This is the number one thing that will get you diverted to secondary inspection. I usually got a carwash, grab a final taco, and then hit the border. Since doing that I haven't had any hassles. But I still find plenty of crud to power wash out of the chassis when I get home.

This time I admit I was running late and just wiped my sliders and fenders clean with a towel at a gas station. Still passed muster.

Bullets, bombs, jets? A-Ok!

Dirt? Get out of town!

Hello,

Illegal aliens, drugs, bullets, bombs, jets? A-Ok!

Dirt? Get out of town!

It is funny how you can cross the border with a full load of forbidden cargo, as long as the truck is clean.

Hmmm...

Slowly finishing up the FJ to HZJ swap on this 73 and took it out on it’s first test drive today . Swapped the rats nest that was supposed to be a oem wiring harness out of it and installed a 24 volt wiring harness from a Euro spec HZJ73 that hasn’t been molested or cooked by the heat . Aftermarket ac installed and heater also .

Is the black piece above the front right fender covering a snorkel hole?
