Playing with Gene's harness has gotten me motivated to start looking at the hacked harness in my HJ, and the 95% clean harness out of a '78 FJ-40 I've got. When you're on a roll you know....

Well, just got home from the long, circuitous route back from the FJ-35LV work weekend (you know, the one that goes via Yosemite ) and I'll be off either tomorrow afternoon or Saturday to go lead two week long backpack trips before the airline gets their teeth back into me. I might even have to shave the mohawk by then .

I'm waiting to see the schedule for August to see if I'll have time to rebuild the front axle and winch early in the month, or if I'll have to hightail it back from the 45 run to get it done afterwards. I'm hoping that our furloughs won't screw with my schedule too much and I can get those done early in the month. If that happens, then I probably just can't avoid tearing into the sheetmetal....

Eric, your build is wicked cool. Your 40 is way more "running" than my 45 is. It has probably moved under it's own power within the past decade, right?

Well, not a whole lot has changed. See the 3B swap in my signature line to see where all my time has been going. But as soon as that is done, my 45 gets some serious love!!!!

But I'll give a teaser for some of you who may not be able to follow my miscellaneous ramblings and questions across multiple threads....






That's right. I have a 1HZ. And a Turboglide turbo (no pics). And an H55f (no pics).

That's what will be going into the 45 sometime relatively soon. I sort of have a self imposed deadline too: it is now registered in Colorado (because I moved there full time). Turns out the fine for not registering it right after titling it cost more than registering it. So, I have one year to have it operable or else I have to go down to the courthouse and fill out another affidavit of non-operation. I don't know if I can handle that, so I'll have to hustle to get it driveable.....

That's all for now (not for two years though, as soon as Dad's 40 is done, and I've cleaned up the shop a bit...)

The 1HZ was an Olympic level score. Came from craigslist of all places. We just happened to have my Dads truck in town when it showed up, so I didn't even have to deal with shipping. A mine removed it and obviously had no idea whatsoever what it was, and someone figured it must be junk since they removed it so they sold it on the SUPER cheap. $800. Not a typo. Eight hundred dollars. I have no idea of it's internal condition though, or mileage. But for that price I can afford to rebuild it. The turbo eclipsed the motor's cost (and I got the turbo here for a fantastic price). Turns out even I get lucky from time to time...

The build is getting scary close. The front axle will be rebuilt, and I've got the elusive 1HZ/H55f bellhousing working it's way here. After the axle I'll rebuild the 5 speed/put invthe 1HZ input shaft. Then I must source a slit case (easy as pie really, I'm just looking for a deal is all...). After that it's mostly a matter of putting it in the frame and making it driveable. I'm going to have to leave my body rusty/hole filled for quite some time though. Contrary to my typical style, I can't be a perfectionist here.

Aus EBay is a fun and frighteningly addictive utopian land of Good Parts(tm). Many 70s had HZ/H55s.

Dan- that is a sweet little combo. I have it with an A440 manual shift (converted) split case in the 62. If you turbo, it will completely wake up the engine with very little boost.

A friend (who is on MUD) and in Australia offered to watch his local junkyards and grab one for me. I'll let him speak up, lest he be bombarded by parts requests. If not that way, I would have first just tried CDan, then Radd Cruisers, West Coast Cruisers, etc... If all of that failed, I would have tried Dave at Japan4x4 and eventually SOR. They aren't all that rare, as you pretty much just need to look for an HZJ-75 bellhousing. They made quite a few.

I'm hoping so. I've never driven one or even heard one, but I just love the idea of a 1HZ with a little turbo on it. I don't need a ton of power, but I do live at high altitude, drive up a lot of big hills, and spend a lot of time cruising at those altitudes. All of that added together tells me that a turbo is key to efficiency, so I'm really, really looking forward to getting to drive my truck (nearly 4 years after I bought it, thanks to "other" projects).

It will be if I ever get the 40 done, I hope....

On the 40 front, I think I've got the days off in December to get it painted and back on the road so I can check it off the list.

Then I'll be able to start tinkering with the 45 again. Seriously I've owned this 3 and a half years and it's mostly sat next to the shop. I've even had to replace the tarp I keep over it once already. Two tarps is the limit though, if this one wears out I'll simply be forced to get cracking on my 45.

This process could be sped up if anyone in the Denver area had a shop they would let me work in for a year or so. The shop is about 500 miles away from home, so I don't ever get to just pop in after dinner, as it were.

Seriously, I'll probably haul some of the assemblies up to Colorado where I can work on them in my sister's garage, so that I won't be wasting my days off in New Mexico doing mundane things like rebuilding the front axle...

Between moving to Colorado, rebuilding the 40, getting married, and not making enough money I've been planning a lot of moves for the 45. It will move as fast as money allows when I finally rip into it. On the plus side, I won't have to do a whole lot of figuring to get it back on the road, I think I've got that pretty well taken care of at this point.

OK, this doesn't really count as an update, but this is definitely the last winter the 45 will spend in the snow in that spot...

It looks so left out, like if only I'd put a plow on it then the 45 could join in on the fun, don't you think?
