Looking at Warn winches for my ARB bumper on my FJ40. The VR series looks nice without being too expensive. Thinking about all of these, but which will fit? Feedback on the newer VR models? What pull strength should I get?

I have the VR 10,000 in my 60. Fit in the ARB easily. I have only used it once, seems to work fine. I also have a M8000 in my Tacoma that has been fantastic. It also fits in the ARB with ease. Seems like on a 40, 8,000lbs should be enough. The VR's are a good value.

The 8274 has a different bolt pattern than planetary winches like the other two. Your ARB bumper will be made to take one or the other, but not both.

For a 40, the 8274 would be my strong preference - I run one on mine.

I agree. In a 40, an 8274 is the winch to have. I'm not sure it's the bolt pattern that's different. It's the relative position of winch components, and on 60/80 arb bumpers, the brake of the winch hits the right side upright.

You'll need to follow Craigs list pretty carefully to find an 8274 for under $500, but I saw one that said it was working and had a cable for $250 in the Bay Area. If it wasn't 90 miles away, I would have been on that like a fat kid on a cupcake, even though I don't need it.

Planetary winches tend to take up the space where you would put your Saginaw power steering box, but a standard M8000 has stood the test of time.

And not only is it a different bolt pattern, it's a totally different mounting configuration. The M8274 has a foot-forward mounting design; the VR series has a foot-down design (e.g. the bolts face downwards vs. forwards).

FYI, all WARN winches mount feet down EXCEPT:

  • M8274
  • M12/M12-S
  • M15/M15-S
  • 16.5ti/16.5ti-s

I don't want to be the guy arguing with the guy from the Warn factory, but regarding the mounting pattern, I thought I remembered they were the same dimensions, so I let the Google sort it out...

M8274-50 4.5" x 10"
M8000 4.5" x 10"
M12000 4.5" x 10"
9500XP 4.5" x 10"

I have both the 8274 and an M12000 and for sure they are the exact same as I have run them on the same bumper.

Obviously not an exhaustive list, but a pretty clear pattern of bolt spacing.

Sometimes a winch, depending on the style mounts a bit one side or the other. I got a Warn 9500
compressor winch, planetary style but its size required some fairly significant mods to RH side on
my 4+Bumper. That being said, it has the identical physical dimensions as it's bigger 12500 lb counterpart.
In my research, what can have an impact is how deep from the inside surface of the bumper that the
feet forward mount, or the front edge of the drum back to how close the rear casing of the winch is
to the grill or lower valance.
But with the FJ40 the 8274 is the usual choice as it is a narrow winch from side to side, allowing
the Saginaw conversion to fit and it's easy to fab the front plate for mounting.
8274 is what is on my FJ40 and soon to be on my BJ74 as well.

Yes they are the same pattern and the M12 and M8274 mount feet forward, so they would fit on your bumper the same. However, the M8000 and 9.5xp mount feet down.

Is there an issue mounting an M8000 foot forward? You make it sound like its foot down only. I just helped my buddy put an M8000 on an ARB bumper on a Nissan and we mounted it foot forward.

No; there aren't any issues. Often you have to clock the endhousing, however. Just remember the rope still needs to come off the bottom.

It looks like the ARB bumpers for the FJ40 (both the old and new styles) are designed to mount an 8274. I don't see an option to mount a foot-down winch like an M8000 or VR series.
