Get it warmed up, then shut down and adjust them. :)

Adjusting - off and operating temp. Checking - running at operating temp. I always whack the valves (in moving line axis) with a lead hammer a few times while warming up, to knock any deposits that could lead to wrong settings. I set for the looser side of the range - better to hear them than burn them IMHO

And flip flops…

i used to be able to do them with it running, but cant anymore....now i just check them running and adjust with it off.

Out of curiosity... after starting at TDC, what is your preferred method of turning the flywheel in order to make your next set of adjustments?
The stock handcrank is the preferred tool...

Ok….I pull the spark plugs first….then put her in 3rd gear and push her forward to line up the flywheel BB with the pointer and #1 at the distributor….then I adjust valves 1, 2, 3, 5, 7 and 9. Then push the old girl back to line up #6 at the distributor and go after valves 4, 6, 8, 10, 11 and 12. Valves are numbered front to back…and you only have to roll the rig around twice….
I’ve used this method for years….however, reading the old F Factory Service Manual, it stated adjust at 500 RPM…e.g. engine running.

So I thought I’d ask ad see what you all were doing…

I've tried a variety of methods, including using a remote starter; hand crank; and pushing/pulling. But my preferred method (because I'm lazy) is using a 1/2" drive 46mm Crow’s Foot Wrench for Crankshaft Pulley Nut. This provides a a level of precision and a nice vantage point for seeing the flywheel through the window. (1-7/8" will work if you don't have 46mm)

I have a hand crank, but it interferes with something under the bib…I’ve read that’s the easiest way to roll the engine for a valve adjustment….i need to play around with it and see what is iterfering with shoving into the balancer…..

So I still running an F with a press on balancer….no hex nut to grab on to…..just the claw spud for the hand crank.

I refuse to adjust valves again.
:flipoff2: ^^ Great Tech Tip from a guy who uses corn, crickets & a Zebco 202 for trout! But if it catches them, eh..... ^^ :flipoff2:

I adjusted mine with the engine off but warmed up. Also rolled my rig in 4th gear to turn the fly wheel.

When I’ve had the valve train removed or apart and need to adjust them cold, I check them again after a warm-up and engine off. I always find little to no difference between hot or cold. I’ve never found a difference when checking them while running after adjusting them hot & engine off.
As a teenager I was taught to adjust valves while running and always did so till I got my 40 and learned here on Mud the method of half & half while hot & off.

I voted hot & off.
