Went to OrangeBoxx Fab this morning, and did a mockup of the gx470 panels he's going to make. Last time I was there, I left him a cap for one of the bolts on the ohcrap handle to color match. these turned out great. he's going to add a little more material at the bottom, to.move the lower standoffs down.

Then I got to work on the 80. rebuilt the starter I got from @fj40z, fixed the broken connector on it, and slapped it in. (After installing it with the bad comnector. lol I need to pay more attention)

Put a battery in and it fired up. no broken teeth on the flywheel. lol

Moved onto converting the front parking lights to dual function. used a pair of 1157 sockets out of a celica, and blended the harness. I've got a set of clear lenses that they will go in. No pics of that, since the whole nose is off for the head swap.

Replaced the hoses for the charcoal canister.

Removed the spark plug covers, and saw more PO asshattery...they have runners in terms valve cover to prevent that, jus sayin. I'll be adding a set of dense wires to the shopping list.

My 100 started having an oil type smell....smells like oil is burning somewhere upfront. I will assume for now that it is the balance cover gaskets.

I found a few threads saying you could tighten the bolts down in case they had come loose.....7 lbs of torque. If I have to replace the valve cover gasket, what type of expense am I looking at?

I haven’t been on here in a bit after selling my 80....my dog has been pretty sick which is also costing me an arm and a leg....so hopefully the valve cover gasket won’t be too crazy expensive....definitely not something I will try myself. Thanks and good to be back!!

Installed a new OME suspension on the 40 this weekend. Lots of cursing and use of the bfh but it’s done. Now the only question/concern is that is the driveshaft too long.

Background is the PO put a set of extra long shackles then used a spacer below the axle perch to move the axle about an inch rear. This allows them to stuff 33s on it. The issue is that in installing the axles back on the rear I had to pull the Grease zerk off the drift shaft in order to release the pressure to get the yoke back in. However I had to really wail on the axle to get it to move into the spring pins. The driveshaft used to show about an 3/4 to 1 inch of splines now it looks like it’s showing nothing. It’s very possible they had it lengthened. I know compression should lengthen the shaft but it feels like I’m starting too far in and am worried about the t-case.

Any thoughts or recs on a driveshaft shop in clt?

Can't imagine the valve cover gaskets being more then $40.00 add a tube of ultra gray sealer for any crevices ( peace of mind) pretty painless install.

Anybody hillbilly enough to do a big shackle lift on a 40 and fab up homemade spring pin relocation brackets is not going to go to the trouble to have a driveshaft lengthened. I'd wager that your DS is all original. FWIW, the driveshaft actually lengthens as the suspension is compressed as a result of the rearward action of the shackles. Again, I think you are going to be okay. How does it drive? Any weird noises or vibes? Congrats on a tidy install and for correcting the PO mistakes.

I’m with you I can’t imagine that they would have spent the $$ on a new ds. My thought was maybe they grabbed one off another vehicle.

Didn’t drive it last night as I finished up late Sunday and also my garage door broke over the weekend. So no test drive yet.

Thanks for the confirmation gonna fix the door then take it for a spin.

Painless even for someone that hasn’t done it before? How long of a process would this be? A few hours? Anything engine related makes me nervous.

Shouldn't take more than a couple hours there's a couple videos out there just search for Toyota 4.7 valve cover gasket repair. Start on passenger side. Basically just label/unplug some plug a few vacuum lines unplug and remove the coils take the bolts off valve cover lift it off. Remove gasket, clean surfaces, apply a little ultra gray where needed. Install gasket, reattach valve cover, torque bolts , install, Connect coils and vacuum lines. Rinse, repeat on driver's side.

Thank you to @David1947 for selling me an alternator for my 60. Big thanks to @fj40z and @JohnVee for mudshipment.

Installing this killed three birds with one stone, gave me power again, miraculously fixed my mysteriously broken horn that has been wracking my brain and wrench confidence, and now that the horn works I can finally pass inspection and get state paperwork again!

Glad not to have to use the hand/finger horn during the holiday season...

Thanks again!

I found one video. Anything I need to be aware of when putting on the new gasket? Where would the ultra grey be needed?

Just make sure the surface is clean and dirt free.
good and if you have a little surface mismatch like in the corner or a little crevice.
.
Just make sure you have the gasket straight and doesn't get twisted or falls down inside the head when you put it on ,especially the driver side it's a little harder to get up underneath the stuff that's over there.

Well i guess this will be my first post lol, But most of you know me as Garrett, Or Eric's son, Well anyways i think i found out the most miserable jobs of working on a 80 today, and that is putting new run gaskets for the windows in the rear doors. 5 1/2 hours to do one side:bang: and another hour to do the other. Thinking that it will be an hour job for both, well nope i'm wrong. With trying to get the lip over the window frame from trying to make sure the lip stays on. Out of every job that i've done on the 80 this will be one i never be doing again...

Well i guess it time to rebuild the front axle tomorrow:cautious:

Dang I’m tired.

Finally sealed up the shed (still need siding).

Lexus oil change
Transmission fluid change (4 quarts only)
All new brakes (flushed out all the old brake fluid with that nice pressure system I borrowed from Eric)
Rotated tires

Just have to change oil on the difs but I’m too cold and tired to do it tonight.

No laughing ... it's for my mom who happens to be a cat person.

The second annual request from my sister to receive work on her car rather than "stuff" for Christmas. Was delighted to learn she only needed a wheel bearing .... much nicer than last years clutch job.

Found a do it yourself shop in Las Vegas and went ahead and did all my fluids
Front and rear differential
Front oil looked somewhat dark but not too bad.
Rear looked new
Trans case was looking pretty dark
Did the one gallon trans fluid change
And went ahead and changed the engine oil and filter at 2600 since I added all those miles since I left home.

Just thought it was note worthy since some of you guys were talking about one of these type of shops

Not bad only took me about 1 hour and 15 min.
