Trip odometer stopped working

I noticed today that my trip odometer stopped working. It my habit to use it to track fuel consumption.

At 227294 miles, is this common? Has anyone tried to fix or replace?

Is this a warning of future odometer failure?

Are there any after market products that can be used to track mileage for PM purposes, if the odometer quits...

Separate units i believe but the shaman or the turk could confirm.

Mine quite working about that mileage as well. I have not looked into repair but have ~ 60k since then with no odometer issues.

I'm at 240k miles and mine is acting up at times. It's hard to reset to 0000 after refueling.

After market product - I use Acar app for android to keep track of all of my vehicles' PM, fuel, etc. I'm old fashion enough to still keep a small notebook in each vehicle for all PM data.
 
The trip meter is part of the speedo head. You have to replace assembly.
 
Mine died around 210k...it was useful, I'd like to have it back.

@cDan Can just the trip meter part be taken out of a junker/partout and put in without replacing the entire speedo head?
 
I have no idea. I would not attempt it myself. I would have a speedo shop do it. If the pointer or faceplate need to come off there is a high probability that you will damage the head if you do not know the tricks.

Yes, exactly....and why I was hoping that one could just attach a new trip meter from the back and leave the needle/face alone but I've not been able to find an answer or been willing to tear it apart to find out.
 
I've had this exact same issue for 20K and was hoping, like everyone else, there would be a simple fix, but so far no joy. I started a thread on this subject a year or so ago and someone's post said they actually opened the speedo head to have a look inside, and the way the trip odometer is made, it cannot be repaired. I've never looked inside myself because I don't want to break more than I fix, so I've left it alone. The speed odometer and odometer work great.
 
From experience the trip odometer and mileage odometer are part of the speedo assembly when I bought my 80 the were both dead. 242k on the clock and dude had been driving it daily back and forth 60+ miles one way for over a year. He said the trip odometer went first and then shortly thereafter the regular odometer went. I had to order a used cluster and swap the speedo out.
 
my trip odometer broke and I ended up swapping out the speedo unit from another 80 to fix it. There's a tab on the back used to reset the trip to 0 that cracks causing it to not reset fully. I don't think a broken trip odo will affect the main odometer.

I was thinking of using an old phone with gps and an app that can log miles and time. For when the main odo decides to stop working...

Mine died around 265k...I were sad. However now its actually kina nice to not be reminded that I get 13 mpg downhill with a tailwind. That being said, it makes it hard to do some basic navigation based on mileage, for that I use a gps device now. My main odo is working fine still, I don't suspect it will go out since I think the reason the trip one goes is the constant unwinding with each reset strips the gears or something, which the main odo doesn't have to deal with.

I had this issue and dug into it, the trip odo is a separate mechanism from the regular odo, although they are connected. You can have a non-functioning trip odo and have your regular odo working just fine, its not necessarily an indicator that the odo is going to go out - mine worked for quite some time after the trip went out.

I opened it up, and having looked at it would consider it a non-serviceable item for the home mechanic. I tried to fix 2 of them, and in doing so ruined the speedo's on both. Someone much smarter than me may be able to do it, and would love to see a thread of someone doing it. For me the solution was to replace the speedo assembly with a good used w/approx the same mileage.

I had to replace the head, they are connected units.
 
I was thinking to rebuild then replace the broken plastic thing on the Trip ODO. I know they're separate but I don't want to swap it out for a few reasons. Primarily, if I have my OEM ODO, I can truthfully say that the mileage is original to the AZ MVD.

Just replace the trip meter with a used one. Easy fix. Remove speedo, take apart, remove speedo needle, remove face plate, unsnap trip meter, snap in the used one and reassemble.

My speedo was reading 1 or 2 mph slow compared to how fast I was driving so when I put the speedo arm pointer back on, I set the pointer to read at about 2 mph at rest. After driving it now shows that when I am going 70 I am actually going 69. Before it was reading 71 mph according to my GPS
