So my trip odometer stopped working the other day. It seemed hard to press when I reset it last, now it won't roll past 4.9 miles. When I tear the dash apart later am I able to just replace the trip odometer or do I need to rplace more?

Also, I couldn't stand the rattling exhaust shield under the passenger floorboard anymore, I tore it off. How hot are my passenger's feet going to get now?

You may have broken one of the small plastic bits that supports the gearing as I did some years ago. If you're patient it's an easy repair with 5min epoxy. After the repair just be gentle when resetting the trip meter. I don't have pics but you'll see it clearly once you have the odometer apart.

the 80 i used to have had a broken trip meter. i never bothered to fix it since the odometer still worked. i'm not much help am i?

Same here, my trip odometer won´t go past 4.9, but it hasn´t bothered me yet. Let us know how it goes if you do fix it.

My odometer & tripmeter both quit working one day when I pressed the reset button & felt a nasty crunch.

I took my cluster all apart, stripped the speedometer assembly apart, and then couldn't see how to take the mechanism apart any farther. I ended up just swapping out the entire cluster for a different one.

This was about as far as I got with mine:

My trip meter & odometer were broken when I bought my LC. I ended up replacing the speedometer unit with a used one with similar miles.

4.9

Thats weird, almost bermuda triangle weird.:hhmm:

Remind me not use my trip meter Haha
On my Volvo broken odos are famous.. you buy a small gear and take
The cluster apart and replace the gear... the cruiser cluster looks a lot more difficult
To get to the odo.

Please help! I've got the cluster out and updated with LEDs, but how do you get to the odometer? There is one tab on each side of the cluster backside, 3 tabs on top and 4 tabs on the bottom. Is it just a matter of lifting these tabs to pull off the backside? As of now, pulling on the tabs does't seem to be doing much. There are numerous screws on the backside, do any of these need to be removed? Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

Try a search.

IIRC one issue was a piece of foam from around the reset post getting stuck in the gears and another issue was a broken very small plastic pawl.

Yes the trip meter is replaceable, but when mine broke, I couldn't find one. You'd most likely have to buy an entire gauge cluster with it included, but then you're still dealing with old brittle plastic bits, and the cluster is certainly more than a few dollars.

The connecting piece from the post on mine broke, and there were some tiny debris in the mechanism that prevented it from moving smoothly (probably bits of foam as mentioned above). I assume that extra resistance is what leads to the break. Cleaned, scuffed mating surfaces & glued it back together. You have to be delicate with it after the repair, and expect it to break again eventually. That said, I didn't go to town with the most robust repair possible, so I'm sure one could do it better.

Removing the cluster & all is simple if you're used to working on stuff. To me, the finicky part is the fact that you have to remove the speedo needle to take it all apart, and it's not a keyed alignment, so don't assume it just goes back on and will be in the correct position. Paid precise attention to how the clock spring (?) works and still took me a few tries to get it showing accurate speed, granted I'm a bit of a perfectionist so I couldn't let 1mph offset slide.
