1HD-FTE turbo has a newer, smaller turbine wheel and housing, and larger compressor wheel than ct26.
Smaller turbine will bring boost on at lower RPM, larger compressor wheel will pump a greater amount of air, so more air available at the same boost level.

Upgrading the compressor wheel only will get you an improvement, but upgrading the turbine as well also has gains, the two together even better.

to use the 1HD-FTE turbine, you need to use the ct20b central housing.
 
Great, that's what I thought the go was from reading through the thread. So you don't think there's any problems with the 13bt and that setup?

And using the ct20b turbine wheel with the ct26 turbine housing, this will work well, but not as well as the smaller turbine housing?
 
You can't use the ct20b turbine wheel with the ct26 turbine housing.
You also can't use the ct20b turbine housing with ct26.
The ct20b central core is smaller, and the turbine housing is smaller to suit.
Simplest thing to do would be source a used 1HD-FTE turbo. They exhaust side will bolt up, the intake side will need some adapters.

Did anyone with the MMP turbo ever get tuned and get close to these numbers for spool?
"torque with a peak power of 238 HP (177.5 kW) at all wheels at 25 psi boost pressure. These turbos can deliver 14 psi @ 1650 rpm and 25+ psi @ 1900 rpm"

I still don't have an intercooler fitted and with the hotter weather now I can tell I have lost some spool but I'm still nowhere near those numbers. I also messed with my tune again trying to get better cruising EGTs and am trying not to tune again till my intercooler is all set.

All the MMP guys went quiet, there was not much feedback on results after the group buy.
 
Agreed, the only feedback I saw on them was they under-performed compared to how they were marketed.
 
There's a few mmp turbos floating around, on engines from standard 1hdt's to modified 1hd fte's .

The best ive seen is 240hp, 650nm at 24psi and 23:1 on a 1hd fte with a tired pump .

Seat of the pants they feel similar to what some custom turbo shops offer based on td06's , broader power and better torque than a td05 18g mamba.

Not as fast a spool as any gturbo but no where near the back pressure or shaft speed either . Power Feel and toque rise is a little later in the rev range than a gturbo

If your mmp turbo doesn't out perform your standard turbo then there's a problem

Anyone got any experience with Munro turbos? They're quite reasonably priced and seem to get good reviews.

It looks like they're just bigger compressors in an otherwise standard CT26/CT20b. Still, for the money they look great.

My brother runs a billet Munro on his FT, standard; not the high flow version. Bolted on, running a Safari FMIC, 3" Exhaust, 500k+kms on the clock, with the waste gate at the munro set 18psi, and no other adjustments he said he has dropped 1l\100km in fuel usage and a notable increase in drivability. He is waiting to do injectors and some other maintenance before tuning .

Well my decision to go with the local turbo shop now looks like a bad one. I won't get specific as I'll go in and speak to them and see what they can do.

I didn't think I'd find a used ct20b, so decided to go local partly because I thought it'd be more reliable than mamba/kinugawa, but also to support the local business. My ct26 was pretty flogged out.

When I spoke to the local shop they said they'd use the compressor housing of the ct26, but internally it'd be a ct20b. When I picked up the turbo I noticed on the invoice one of the items was 'cw td0506 d635 20g'. From what I remember reading here that sounded like a pretty big wheel, probably too big? Maybe I should have spoke to the shop as soon as I noticed that. Certainly my conversations with them previously had been about driveability and low rpm boost.

Well the turbo is on and it's terrible. Boost builds very slowly, doesn't get up past 5psi till past 2000rpm, doesn't want to make more than 10psi and that's foot planted and waiting and waiting for the revs to get up. It looks like it starts to boost at a similar rpm (1600) to the ct26, but it builds very slowly and only with heavy throttle. Driving around town it feels like not having a turbo.

So the turbo has the ct20b turbine housing, but I don't know what turbine wheel, there's nothing listed on the invoice. Is it the case that the compressor wheel is just way too big and theres not enough exhaust energy to push it? Googling d635 comp wheel comes up with a mamba wheel that's 52.56/68.01 mm.

That's terrible. A 20G wheel on a 13BT would never work well. In fact it'll work just as you've experienced.

Which shop put a 20g on a 13bt?
What did you ask/hope for .
I've only played with one 13bt and we used a td04hl 16t with a 6.6cm turbine housing. Drove well for what it was max boost was set at 20psi and it achieved that before 2000rpm was only road tuned so not sure on power

Return it for a refund as soon as possible. That is a horrible mismatch. That turbo can never be made to work properly on such a small motor. It is oversized in every way. Mcreight mentioned a somewhat uncommon Volvo turbo (16t) that will work you just have to adjust the wastegate a bit and get an adaptor. More common is the td04hl-13t-6 which also comes from Volvos. Both work well and will give you the performance your looking for.

The td04hl 16t / he221 is becoming more common in the aftermarket world. the 6.6cm turbine housing is not as common and is found on some Fuso trucks . Customer wanted a 200hp capable turbo for when he upgraded the fuel system . The 13t would be a
Better match for a 13bt with a standard fuel system. Didn't you have one @gerg
