The difference in weight between 1/4” and 3/16” plate is about 2.6 lbs per square foot so building the transfer case skid from 1/4” only would have added another 5 lbs. The transfer case skid plate is pretty small.

Normally I would agree that 1/4” is overkill for a skid plate. I’ll have to get this out in the rocks and see how strong it is, or maybe I should put a jack under it and see if I can lift the truck from the skid. Now there is a great idea.

3/16s is a lot unless you are really dumping a lot of weight, especially with bends. I'll be amazed if you really manage to mangle a bent 3/16 skid.

FWIW I had to reinforce my 1/4" TC skid after smashing it up a few times. It dose have bends in it and as it flattened out it popped the OEM captured nut lose from the frame.
If you get turtle out you can have the hole weight of the vehicle resting on the skid.

Has anyone here ever run a late model drum parking brake with primary disk brakes for a 2005 or newer corporate 14 bolt on an early model housing? I am exploring options for my 1987 housing with cab and chassis dual rear wheel hubs.

I will probably run my existing El Dorado disc brakes for another year, but I need to make a decision soon since I am also considering line locks or electric parking brakes, which would mean that my parking brake handle would be obsolete. I am getting ready to take the Land Cruiser in to have the interior finished, and I would like to weld up the hole in the floor if I am going to remove my cable. However, I would prefer to use my handle and cable on something mechanical for the parking brake, which is why I am considering potentially swapping in later model parts.

Yeah, I have a late model 14bolt (also called aam10.5). The ebrake worked well when I installed it, but my cable situation was always jenky. I need to revisit it.

I have an early model 14 bolt from 1987. Are you confirming that you have installed 2005 or newer brake hardware on an older housing?

No, I'm saying I have a late model 14 bolt (aam10.5). Maybe I misinterpreted your question.

To put the late drum-in-hat style brakes on you'd have to cut off the flange from your housing and weld on the later style, not to mention buy all of the individual components.

I can't recall if you've linked the rear or not, but if not it'd be easier to change the housing and put your gears in the new housing than it would be to retrofit all the brakes.

I like the idea of the electric parking brakes run a separate switch for each side and that would effectively let you use them as cutting brakes and double as the parking brake.
IMO it would be the cats meow

There was a guy on Pirate4x4 making a weld on flange for the older 14B to install newer hat=drum parking brakes and disc brakes off a 2500-3500 GM. I have a set somewhere. Cut off the old one and weld the new one on. The guy may be on Irate4x4 now.

I lifted the Cruiser up with a jack under the transfer case skid plate and it is mostly solid, though it does flex a little bit when the full weight is on it. I think that I am going to run this next year and see how it does. I have a cross member on either side of the skid so I bet that a rock would rarely distribute the weight directly to the skid plate.

Solid logic. It’ll be fine. Like you said, distribution, and it’s likely you’ll be moving anyway so hopefully it’s momentary. And unlikely truly full weight.
Until it’s not, of course.

Here is the second video that breaks down the drivetrain. I ran a few errands in the Cruiser today and I am excited to get the interior done. Hopefully it brings the noise down a bit. The PCM also needs some tuning as it shut the throttle off twice while I was on the highway.

Great video, really good production Mike!

I've created an Etsy store with items from my 2025 adventures. This is a side hustle and I don't expect to make enough to justify posting in the vendor section. I am willing to explore custom orders.

There are only 4 items in the store at the moment and I have ordered some t-shirt samples that I will inspect for quality control before adding them.

Some items in my store may feature other Cruisers in the background, although I have tried to use images where my Cruiser is the main focus. If you spot an item that has your Cruiser in the background and are interested in purchasing it, please send me a direct message. I will sell one item to you at cost as your first purchase.
