My stockish 07/1969 FJ40 is making a funny squealing noise when you first start it after its sat for a day or longer.

I have ruled out everything belt driven, and clutch related. Its gotta be coming from the motor. (ran motor with no belt or clutch/tranny installed to rule things out as I was working on other projects.)

Seems that pushing the clutch has some influence on the noise.
So this leads me to the crank end play/thrust bearing.
Anyone ever had this symptom?

Its not getting any worse. Motor runs good. Oil drains clean. Oil pressure is a on the low side at idle. I have ran 20-50 Valvoline Racing since I have owned it. Lil stp added for giggles (combo seemed to help the low oil pressure).
Noise lasts about 5-30 seconds after cold starting then disappears. Wont do it again the rest of the day. Let it sit over night and it will squeal again.
Not super loud. Sort of a muffled belt squeal noise.

Not really ready to rebuild my motor...but don't want to cause more damage by continuing to drive it.
A mechanic friend of mine suggested to check for any vac leaks before going any farther.
Cant locate any. So I call on mud wisdom!:grinpimp:

Any quick ways to diagnose this to either rule it out or confirm?

Letting it sit a few days...as the longer it sits the longer it will make the noise. Then I will attempt to get a video with some sound shot of it to help diagnose.

Flywheel rubbing when cold? Then expands away with warm up? The hose idea should help a lot. Good luck!

something up with dizzy?

So, if your stock '69 sits a few days, it'll squeal for up to 30 seconds on start-up, then go away until it sits for a day or two? And it's not too loud? And that's the worst problem? Drive it until it gets loud all the time.

Squeal or a whistle? It could be a small vacuum leak. When it heats up, it expands and closes the hole. Maybe check your intake manifold for cracks.

Good luck!

Edit: D'oh, I just re-read your post and you said you checked for vacuum leaks already.

Huh? Maybe your ears work different with your leg extended?:p

Unless you have some sort of vacuum assist on the clutch master, or the fork is dragging on the output shaft (is the fork even in place?) I can't imagine this has anything to do with the noise.

Is the noise RPM related?

Nope not really rpm related. Well...it will stop/start if you blip the throttle a lil after you start it.
I ran the truck briefly with no clutch and transmission installed when I had it out just to see if the noise was gone...it wasnt.
What I mean is now that its all back together and I start it up. I can sometimes? make the noise start/stop/slightly change by pressing/releasing the clutch...which I assume is putting an endload on the Crank.

I almost had some vid but my card ran out of memory right after I started it this morning...so I am gonna let it sit a few more days and try again with room on my memory card lol.

it this temperature related ? I have had the speedometer cable squeal upon leaving the truck in the cold overnight - goes away as soon as the temperature rises in the engine compartment

I sorta knew this one would be tough to grasp...thus my title. hah.
Definetely not the speedo cable.
Dont think its temp related as it only lasts about 20-30 seconds at the most if its sat a long time.
Today after 2 days of sitting it only made the noise for like 5 seconds.

Not really that worried...for a 40 year old she is in awesome shape! Someone loved her!
More curious really!

Very puzzling, not being RPM related, which pretty much would rule out anything rotating.

Well I'll quit guessing, hope something comes up that will help you. Good luck.

One more guess, though. Do you have a heat riser bypass in your exhaust system? (or a really pissed off rodent)

Ya its a funny one...had me wondering for 2 years now hah.
I guess in a way its rpm related as when you bump the rpms up the nosie stops.
It definetely sounds "rotational"...like a dry metal on metal or rubber on metal rubbing.

Pic of the old girl so we know who we are talking about!
