Yeah I do that already that’s why I video record the shenanigans of those who won’t. The tons would just be for showing off so I feel adequate in the midst of real rock crawling hooligans. I’m not a hooligan yet but a wanna be…… does bending my tie rod make me a rock crawling hooligan?
 
I would buy an entire old truck for the axles, something that has trees growing up through it. But I don’t break stuff so much that I’d consider this plan as of yet. Cutting the axle tubes to locate the diffs and gain desired WMS to WMS would be part of the plan.

If you really knew……. You missed the fun on Saturday. Spyduh’s rig got a couple new dents and he, himself, never left camp but Chuck did. Too bad you we not there. I hope this thread owner doesn’t mind us carrying in casual straight talk on his/her pages. Can never be sure of those gender pronouns.

Yup...no doubt at all. Know several F250 original SF owners that broke axles and swapped in FF to remedy the issue. SF does not stand up to heavy loads plus the torque demands in off road terrain. SF is definitely cheaper, but also inferior for off road and racing. Not a good thing to find out when you thought you got a deal on your SF truck and you snap an axle fully loaded and you're 50 miles off pavement. Not sure if you can still get SF on a new F250 or E250, but at one time you could. Some fleets like Fedex used them successfuly for (of course) mainly on pavement work. "Just sayin'", avoid 8 lug SF axles that you might see at a salvage yard for an off road build, especially on a heavy rig - like our 80's. Might work on a buggy or a lighter build, since an 8 lug SF is slightly stronger than a 5 or 6 lug SF.
 
Just cruised the entire 29 pages and man you have come really far in a fairly short time, nice work! Thanks for laying it out there so well. I have definitely learned a lot on where I want to go with my 80. I too moved from the mini truck world into the 80, and hope to make my 80 as close to capable as my old dual cased first gen on 37's while still being able to carry the kids and drive down the hwy.

quick question, did the 3" tourflex springs perform well other than being too short? I am at 2" with stock springs/ spacers now and looking for some 3" options to get a little more uptravel for the fire roads and bumps. my plan is to stay 37's and cut alot to allow as little bump drop as possible.

Tourflex drove fine. Mine were the mediums and sagged because of my heavyweight. Went to the 4 Slee's and everything was perfect for load capacity.

I've been thinking of maybe changing it up and going 3" front flexi springs from Dobi. and then leaving my 4" HD Progressive Slee's in the rear and taking out the 30mm spacer. This would lower my COG a little better. However to do that I would need to do a lot more cutting to regain better uptravel. I would have to cut out the wheel wells like @mazder did on his build. Not sure if I'm ready for that or I just want just wheel it as is and just enjoy it. I'm at the point where I just want to enjoy it as it is.

It'll never be the same as a dual cased mini in terms of driveability on the rocks. They are just big, wide, heavy, and not nearly geared low enough. It would be so much better if there was a viable dual case option. But I learned to deal with it as it can comfortably get my family down the trail. It's has a lot better road manners down the freeway compared to a SAS'd mini on leafs. It's not my forever truck and as the kids get too old and no longer want to go with me. I will eventually build another 1st Gen 4Runner build.

What works for one is not necessarily going to work for the next Guy. There are too many variables, how much weight you carry, tire size, driving style to name a few.
The 37s fit much better on a 80 then 39s so that well help as well.

yeah every vehicle is a compromise right. I would have a one seat tube buggy or a ultra 4 car if money wasn't an issue and I didn't have passengers or cared about getting wet....lol

I am building a fj40 on 40's with an atlas for the non kid trips as well. my dream is to have the kids get old enough to want to wheel the 80 and follow me. probably will never happen but a man can dream.

what are the options dual case wise now? Atlas or black box like @joez? any others? granted with the auto and torque do you need 200:1? with my old 22r i had a hand throttle and would do fordyce at 3K rpms in double low so i could roll over the rocks and not bog down. havent taken the 80 up fordyce yet as we have moved to a different state but i have done other rock areas at a much lower RPM unless climbing steep.

I guess my question is what is the goal ratio with a more torquey motor and the advantage of the slip in an auto?
 
Blackbox is the only option but requires quite a bit of work. external BB cooling and gas tank mods.
edit: BB using the stock MOTOR that is. If you engine or trans swap then your options open up. But whatever is requires a lot more work then bolt on.

The lowest gearing possible is 5.29s diff gear, under drive tcase gear, low range gears + Torque converter math. I would say I am approx at 90 or 95-1 at max with the TQ going. It's not nearly as slow a duals on even stock 2.28 in both cases.

I say it's pretty close to a single 4.7 tcase but still a little bit faster. Only saving grace about 80s is the fact it has a lot more HP and low end TQ. Which really makes it pretty decent for getting up over stuff. I just wish it was a tad lower so I had better control on decents and going slower so it slows down body sway.

Got my new RCV 300s and my flanges drilled out to 7/16. Got spare flanges too just in case.

Hopefully I'll have these popped in by next weekend

Nice, but no rush .... I don't think it will help on those trails in the Sierras with the weather that's supposed to dump up there this weekend.🌨️❄️ Maybe next spring.....:arghh:
I might do a Wentworth springs run in Dec. Otherwise the next trip is JV during Hammer's
