Now the spacer and speedo gear on the rear output shaft.

It was time to put on the bearing retainer and check preload.

NOTE:
YOU HAVE TO PUT THE TRANSMISSION IN NEUTRAL FOR THIS BUT IF IT IS A NEW H55, DO NOT MOVE IT AGAIN! YOU CAN BUGGER IT BADLY!!!!

Ensure this oil slinger is in place and tight:

Then align the rib on the retainer with the rib on the case and tighted the bolts to 25 foot pounds.

This took me a couple tries but I ended up with a number 5 shim in there (.5mm). My preload was about 12 inch pounds with the number 4 until I put the gasket in and it fell to 6 so I took it apart and put in the 5 and torqued everything and it is within spec.

That is where I am at. So I am waiting for a couple small bits from CDan as well as the shim to replace those I borrowed from the mud member.

Are you talking about this part?:

I wish I could find it for reference, but I read while doing the rebuild that the tranny needs to be in neutral to fit it to the xfer case. A warning in that "tutorial" stated (IIRC) that once in neutral, you should not moved it anywhere again until you are done and hooked up because damage to shift forks or synchros could result. I will need to look again and see if I locate that warning. When I read it, it stuck in my head pretty good.

I also fixed the missing pics in post 22. I did not see any others missing.

Poser, you need order info? (Keep in mind it has been 2 years  )

XMSN 33030-60450 list was 2335.55 I paid 1650
Shifter 33530-60220 list was 155.93 I paid $120.98
Freight was $100 and I went and picked it up at a depot.

And no. It is not running. The body is still on the dolly but at least it has two coats of primer on it.
Rear driveshaft is made and in temporarily since I will need it out to get the parking brake cable fitted and in.
Front DS is on the bench.

Still following! Get this thing on the road while there is still gas to run it with.

Hey, Hugh -

Did you ever work out the 2F vs 3F Bellhousing issue ?

I'm doing the same thing into a '74, including the split case drum brake, and have the 3F bellhousing, so I'm wondering if the 3F housing worked or if you had to source a 2F ?

Thanks.

Either one will work. I have both and determined that the angle was ok so I am sticking with the 3F. It has a cleaner appearance. I set it up with the 2F housing like Poser did; allowing the mounts to rest on the frame with no rubber between them and the frame and then swapped it for the 3F.

Once it was in and I noticed the angle, I unbolted the sides while leaving the transmission bolted to the rear rubber mount and nothing moved. That is what made me decide to leave it.

Gday Hugh,
quick question (and a silly one at that)
attachment.php

oil slinger on the front output shaft- concave bowl side up with the three slingers poking up/out (like it sits in your hand), or convex side up with the slingers facing the bearing?
Is this slinging oil on the seal or on the bearing?
Cheers,
(I'm putting mine together tonight and tomorrow- mine didn't have an oil slinger, but the donor case did)
Hans.

Can someone verify the direction the oils slinger goes? The post following this one only says "bearing", but I'm not sure which question he was answering.

Convex side up, Slingers facing the bearing.

Excellent. Once again, thanks for documenting this thread. It's been a huge help!

Well, I should have read this first. I have my case all rebuilt, looks beautiful. Have an FJ60 June '86. Swapped the original gearbox for a five speed, rebuilt from SOR. Two questions. There was one smaller bolt that holds the front part of the split case to the trans just below the output shaft that was not needed with the new tranny. Still a hole there..... Also the little plastic oiler thing, what SOR calls a breather, and i see goes on the other side of the split case towards the tranny...essential? I guess I might be pulling everything apart

Got my answer from Kurt at SOR. Hole needs to be tapped and a tapered brass plug put in. And I need to put that oiler in. Man oh man. Someone should really make a small booklet for guys like me, with all the little things that no manual or anything else has for rebuilding anything on a LC. I guess that is why this place is here! ;)

I'll beat Hank's dead horse some more, prongs point toward the seal.

Thanks for the clarification.
