Ok, So I dissasembled the TC last weekend, no problem, going to mount rebuilt 5 speed. Front companion flange removed, Front output shaft - tapped out of old bearing mounted in front side of split case, oil seal removed, this crazy looking locking washer (the kind that has three outside tabs sticking out that you could bend back in...or at least that what it looks like) falls out. It was in between the oil seal and the bearing and has three little prongs on the inside that fit on the shaft splines so when the shaft spins it spins too. My Machine shop guy (who builds race cars) said it looks like it does not belong there but he is not completely familiar with LCs. It also does not show anything like this in any of the schematics that I have looked at. I guess since it was there that it belongs there ...but it's just weird. I hope the picture I tried to post comes through. Many thanks. Walt

oil seal, etc..webp

Thanks...actually my race car guy said as much but he was not sure....I figured I would put it back in but but funny there is no picture of it either in the FSM or on the schematics at Specter Off Road

It is in the FSM for a 62. In the schematic Toyota calls it the "No 2 oil receiver" for some reason. Wouldn't be the first thing toyota left out of an FSM on accident...

the front slingers were not on all 60 series split cases, they were added sometime towards the end of production. i install them anytime i build a split case.
the #1 oil receiver is the slinger on the idler gear iirc.

thanks, one more... in the FSM it says use thread sealer on the bolts when you reassemble, does that mean loctite (red or blue) or some kind of gasket/sealer compound?

I use Loctite 518. Acts as a sealer and thread locker.

Can someone confirm which direction the oil slinger goes?

This thread says the concave side goes towards the bearing, but I took my original one apart and the concave side (as shown in the picture above) was towards the seal and front drive shaft.

I installed mine with the concave side towards the bearing, but I'm getting some noise and vibration only when 4wd is engaged and some in and out play in the front drive shaft flange.

Flat surface on the bearing or the slinger would get crushed.

That helps tremendously. I just finished taking mine apart. I had installed it backwards as the other thread suggested, and it was crushed and mangled- just like you said.

Hopefully, that's where my problem lies following the rebuild.

Thanks!!!

What problems are you having?

What problems are you having?

When I first drove with the rebuilt t-case, it was good as new- still is in 2wd. In 4wd when I get up to a certain speed (driving straight on dry pavement) and particularly when I let off the gas, there is a vibration and a growling sound. It has progressively gotten worse. It sounds and feels almost like a bad u-joint.

I'll post a pic later of the oil slinger I just took out of it. I think installing the oil slinger backwards kept the washer and stake nut from properly seating the front drive flange, so there was play in the t-case output shaft and vibration when the drive shaft was unloaded (decelerating).

I just pulled mine apart this weekend same oil slinger. Super glad we have george to tell us where it goes FSM not showing it at all.

did you try it without the front driveline in place?

thanks matt.:)

I haven't run it without the front driveshaft yet. I just ordered new u-joints for the front drive shaft- the rear one is not turning smoothly.

Here's pics of what happens with the oil slinger backwards. Doesn't show up real well, but it's crunched and the "slinger fins" are messed up:

The normal one is on the left. The bent one is on the right.

Get a new slinger, front seal and stake nut.

If you can't find them, pm me. I have those parts in stock.

Also, rotate the snap ring on the front output bearing so the opening is on the bottom.

Inspect the bearing and snap ring for damage. The tabs on the slinger would have made contact with at least one if them. In 4wd that would have caused some noise for sure.

Georg, how come your phone number is not on your heading, I always gotta go find your card for that?

Or is it cause you would get a zillion phone calls:beer:

Thanks for posting this. I'm planning to rebuild my TC soon.
Gotta keep our eyes out for those great FJ62 parts.

Wait, just to clarify...

When you install the slinger, the 3 "tabs" or "projections" face toward the bearing????? Or away from the bearing toward the seal???

Thanks
