Shoulder Seat Belts

pivot anchor needs to be well behind the seat back to do anything good for you in an accident....front or rear....

I was planning on installing the new seat belt anchor points as seen here in diverba's pig. Am I better off using the factory installed points above the passenger doors?

There seems to be some of the better built 55's with the anchor on the pillars. not saying they know something. I'm no engineer, so I'm not sure either.

Would be a pain for the passengers, getting in with the belt in their face, but I don't want to go through all the trouble and no have them work right.

Yeah, that's where I'm at on this. I have already welded plates with nuts on them near the bottom of the b pillars. I was all set to do the same up high as in the picture, but now I have safety concerns.

I would be inclined to fab a support and fastener aft of the C pillar in the roof rail. I really think the shoulder belt needs to be secured BEHIND the back of the shoulder or else it is pointless. no sense if going to extra work for protection that may only add to injury- realize I'm waaaay out on a limb for that statement. Best fab an interior cage and weld anchors where ever they need to be;)

There is already a mount in the roof rail aft of the C pillar - very similar to the anchor aft of B pillar (over rear door opening) for the front seat passengers.

My understanding is that this was present all the way back to the '69 Pigs. Not sure why they were planning on 3-point belts then and not including them?

I may have a picture of this...

I was just driving our newer car today and noticed that the pivot point for the shoulder harness is even with the front seat, pretty close to the position in the photo that I posted.

Has anyone noticed a difference in the mounting points for the seat belts on the floor of the different model years? I thought that they were further forward on that 77 body, more under the bench seat. On this 74 they seem to be more in the way of the rear passenger's foot space. Also there seems to be extra mount points in the rear seat area for a third seat belt. Has anyone tried to add enough seat belts for three back there. I know it would be crowded for three adults, but for kids it would be fine. Just curious.

Bump on this question - is there a left and right side retractor?

Here is what I have, all three part numbers end in "R" and it looks like the shoulder mounts are all for the passenger side.

Going back to this question - can anyone eye their original retractable belts and tell me if they have a L and a R? Are the retractors all on the same side, regardless of what side of the Cruiser it is mounted on?

I have these 3, and all the retractors are on the same side. Wondering if these can serve in either side of the Pig?

Not getting too many answers on that question - hoping this question fares a little bit better:

If you have the factory retractable 3-point belts in your Piggy, does the metal part you buckle face in (into the interior) or face out (out towards the window) when the belts aren't buckled?

TIA!

There is a Pig in the next town over that I should be able to swing by and take a look... I can post answer if anyone cares.

resurrecting an old thread, as I am looking to add 3 point shoulder seat belts to the front bench seat in my 73 FJ55. Wanted to see if ahyone here has done the upgrade recently? Thx!

I am pretty sure I referenced my build thread with what I did. I don't really want to go back through 5 pages at this point.
Feel free to look through my thread (link in sig), PM me if questions...

I believe several have installed three points. Here's what I did.

Backing nut for the third point.

Welded it on the B pillar where I wanted it and had to pull the nut up from the bottom with a wire.

Right about here on the model. Don't mind the ugly mug, he's just a hired hand on the farm.

I did the same as @scrapdaddy did above. In my build thread there was some further discussion about the thread size and pitch of the seatbelt bolt going into that plate, and what size and thickness it needs to be.

The takeaways are -

Factory bolts I believe are 11mm 1.25 pitch, not easy to find a good variety of hardware in this size.

7/16” – 20 is virtually the same and much easier to find. Just convert them over unless you have a specific reason to keep everything metric.

1.25 pitch = 0.04921 pitch in inches

20 Thread Per Inch = 0.05000 pitch in inches

11mm = .4331”

7/16” = .4375”
Get some 12mm x 1.25 and you'll be good.
When in doubt if I’m going to modify safety equipment from factory on a factory vehicle I’ll look at the guide lines of FIA or SFI.

SFI says Shoulder Belt Angle: 0 to -20° (-10° optimum) from horizontal

Seat Belts | SFI Foundation

I thought SFI said a seat belt anchor point backing plate should be fashioned out of a piece of 11-gauge steel with an area of about 6 square inches minimum but I can’t quickly find that info to post as fact so take it as speculation.

LOVE IT! I just need to find/sorce a set of these plates to weld into my pig. Anyone make these or have a set they want to sell me?
