Felt like Dr. Frankinstein yesterday. ITS ALIVE!! MUAHAHAHA. such a good feeling after all that work.

Here is a video of the engine running on the fuel in the float bowl. ran Ok for about 30 seconds before I disconnected the battery. It was also choked the whole time too. I need to go through the carb and make sure its working right and I am still waiting on the petronix to get here in the mail. Additionally I need to find my timing light to actually get timing close. I apologze for the bad quality of the video. I am not a film maker. Just a photographer. Also I used some tinfoil as a choke. dont judge me!

I adjusted the valve lash as best I could cold. It seemed to help it start alot.

That’s so sweet. Good for you.

Here is a filmmaker’s secret that not many people know: the phone/camera can be turned 90*. I know, I just blew your mind.

But seriously, SoToked for you!

I probably stood there in amazement that it started running so well on a first crank that I forgot to bust the phone out for a good 15 - 20 seconds. Thanks!!

Bits and pieces from my sons basketball team I hear and don’t understand without google. He’s 15 and thankfully speaks mostly normal English aside from calling me Blud…

Sounds exactly like the kids in my HS art class full of 9th graders. I have no idea somtimes what they are trying to tell me.

Ill be honest, I didnt even notice the video was vertical haha.

What is the model number?

Here is my OEM dizzy - it is and electronic dizzy from for 1979-1980 (19100-61101). It needs some TLC to get it back to life. Was going to reach out to Fourrunner but I think he retired out of that.

So this was the same DIzzy that was one the fj40. I am guessing it was just placed in there.

Thats the tractor we all know and love.

I installed this Petronix unit yesterday. the LS ones are lobe sensing. That means I dont need the magnet sleeve right? I got worried when it showed up and it didnt have it. I have not gotten around to testing it running yet. also I do have the taller rotor I bought a while back that I did install. One think I dont like about the kit is the rubber grommit is too small and leaves a gap when the cap is installed. I am going to need to figure out a creative solution for that. so water and scum does not get in.

Lots of work done today! I have good and bad news.. I guess Ill start with the good news. I got my transmission apart finally. I ended up using the the puller @red66toy let me borrow for the lower bearings. and I used a modified slide hammer puller to get the upper ones. I will say. The engine side shaft (input shaft?) was a real pain. I think I spent about 2 hours working on it.

Below is the modified slide hammer attachment. dont worry it was a cheep slide hammer.

slowly the bearing crept out.

tada! Needle bearings went everywhere. I think I found them all though.

and out!!
I am happy that I got it apart. Once you have the assembly out it seems a-lot less daunting!

Now for the bad news. I am pretty sure the transfer case side shaft (output shaft?) has more wear than I noticed before. I guess my eyes just didnt want to see it haha, I am pretty sure I should find another shaft. I saw that SOR has them but I really dont want to shell out 300$ for one. Any chance a mud member has a good used one? I still need to get the rebuild kit as well. Look at the picture below and tell me what you all think. I am really annoyed that I missed this.

I think I was so focused on the engine until today.

Some other interesting things. I for some reason cannot get the pertronix to work as well as the points. I am going to do some investigating tomorow and see whats up with that. I suspect I flooded it trying to get it started.

When you put the tranny back together be sure and put a marks on the back washer and the back gear to align the washer in the grove that it goes in. Once you’re trying to put it all together, that washer will get out of the spot it fits in and you’ll have to try and rotate it and refit it while pressing the bearings in. It’s a pain and made worse bc that washer will always fall out of its slot. If you have alignment marks on the washer and rear gear, it’s much easier.

Mine looks like it has less wear than that one. I think mine has about 0.1mm of wear on it. You are welcome to it if you want to go used.

What is different with the dizzy after the swap? Did you check the vacuum works properly? The supplied hardware was not right and would not work right under vacuum. Was just a screw to swap out.

My experience with it not right at first

Did you use a new one in your 4speed? I might want to go used. I am going to shop around a little and see. If you could shoot me a pm of what you will like to get for it. I think to use the 3speed transfer case I have to get a different gear that slips on this shaft. I am wondering if it would be better for wear to get a new shaft.

I think my battery just sucks in combination to how I am starting it with a screw driver. I ended up buying on amazon a remote starter because I am thinking I am grounding it out weird the way I am starting it. especially since I need to make sure the carb works correctly and everything else before I stab the whole thing in the fj40.

If your looking for that gear or transmission info, hit up valley hybrids. Good peeps 👌

Not a whole lot got done on Saturday. I cleaned, cleaned, cleaned, wire-wheeled, cleaned some more with solvents then washed and dried the transmission case and then painted it with some enamel tractor paint. I think it will look good once everything is put back together.
