There you go. Positive cable to solenoid looks the right thickness. Try removing the nut and clean it, the post and cable connection. Is there a black/yellow ground cable from the bottom of the starter to the frame?

There is a thick (4gauge?) wire grounding the starter to the frame, all black.

Yeah, it's about half the thickness of the battery cables. Make sure you clean it and the negative (ground) cable. Hey, ya gotta start somewhere!

Cleaned both positive connection and negative connection. And yes, the negative has a yellow stripe now that some of the grime is off.

Have you tried starting it? Any difference?

A bit, the belts wanted to turn but only a smidge.
Still a solid CHUNK sound.
I think I located the crankshaft pulley nut, the outer assembly just spins independent of the wheel, hoping that’s normal...

Was there a small gauge black / white wire on that small male pin on the solenoid?
Yes, there was.
I just made a thicker gauge jumper and it almost turned over. Still lots of CHUNK CHUNK though.

you guys are great, thanks for hanging in with me.

Can you tell if the clunk is from the solenoid, or the starter? I gotta get some shuteye, check back tomorrow.

I would say the starter, it’s pretty guttural and big sounding. Thanks for your time thus far. Much appreciated.

Thank you to all who contributed to my first thread tonight. I’m a lot closer than I was before your input. I realize I have a hill to climb with this beast, but luckily I’ve got the right gears and a place like this to aid me. I’ve got to say that actually rolling up windows and hearing the satisfying sound of these doors closing as I wrap up my day is a lot of motivation.

My last land cruiser never let me down and also burnt blisters on my right ankle as I drove it. My favorite vehicle ever... until now. I’m a Toyota man to be sure, I picked up this FJ with my tundra, my wife drives a Highlander (there can be only one) and this FJ marks my 8th Toyota.

This forum rocks,
Thank you for the work you have done to make it so.

If this "chunk" is all you got, try putting in first gear and moving the vehicle. Sounds like the engine is "stuck", and should with little resistance push along in gear.

You might want to pull the starter and test it to make sure the solenoid is engaging the starter. If it is, you've eliminated it as the culprit and move on to the flywheel and engine.

What’s the history on the motor? When did it run last? If it’s been a while you might need to do some lubrication updating, to include a little miracle oil in the top of each cylinder after pulling the plugs - keeping wiring order in mind.

Great point. I’ll do this next. I picked up oil and a filter yesterday as well as new plugs when I got the battery. It’s likely been quite some time since the engine ran.

The Hard Way,
I’ll look into pulling the starter if the above doesn’t move me foreword. What are the thoughts on gear reduction units? Or 60 series starters? Was perusing another thread that touched on this.

I bought a used one recently from a fellow Mudder to put in my 78. WOW what a difference. If either of the other two starters look at me crosseyed, I'll be shopping for another gear reduction!

I'm wondering if maybe your engine is seized? All it takes is a little moisture in the cylinders to start some corrosion and things lock up pretty quickly. It's already been suggested above, but removing the spark plugs, putting a little marvel mystery oil in each cylinder, and giving it 24+ hours to do its' thing might be your best course of action.
